Why matte brown is the color for autumn

As the weather's gotten cooler lately I wanted to shift my hair color into a fall mood 🍂 My hair's on the thin side so it's always been natural brown rather than fully black, but since it wasn't a fancy dyed color, I figured — why not, let's set the mood! I booked a dye appointment with designer "Kio" at Hair Onsae and went.

Hair Onsae location and parking: first floor of the Burger King building

The salon is on the first floor of the building with the Burger King, so even first-time visitors should find it without much trouble! If you're driving though, you need to stay in the far lane to enter and park in the private lot — the vehicle entrance is right next to the road, so go in slowly (it's a bit risky).

Inside Hair Onsae: a glass-fronted salon across the whole first floor

I was surprised the moment I walked in — the space was bigger than I expected. The entire first floor of the building is run as the salon, so it felt very spacious and bright! Instead of the usual cramped, closed-in salon feel, it's fully glass-walled, so natural light pours in and the whole place feels open and airy.

Maybe because I visited on a nice day, but with the outside view through the glass and the sunlight coming in, it felt less like I'd come to get my hair done and more like I was on a little picnic, haha.

Consultation first, then a private 1:1 treatment room

Dyeing takes a long time, so sitting there for ages can get stuffy — but I got to have my treatment in a private, 1:1 space with the designer. That private space is exactly what sets Hair Onsae apart from other salons.

After talking it through with the designer, I settled on "matt brown." Best of all — before dyeing, designer Kio carefully checked my current hair condition and existing color, and recommended the right strength of dye to get the color I wanted. Seeing how damaged my hair was, she also recommended a clinic treatment, which I really appreciated! Hair color in photos can look different once it's actually on your head, and that was exactly what I was worried about — but she explained all of that too, so I could trust the process and go ahead.

How long it took: 1 hour 30 minutes of color plus 30 minutes of clinic

I didn't want it toned down too dark, but I also didn't want a brown with too much yellow or red in it — and once I explained the look I wanted during the consultation, she worked exactly to that. Matt brown has less red tone than regular brown and feels a bit more subdued, which really does suit the fall mood!

The autumn matte brown result 🤎

The clinic treatment wasn't just a quick product application — she took her time and went through the whole process carefully. Doing the clinic together with the dye took a bit longer, but it made me feel like my hair was really being looked after. Usually after dyeing, the ends feel stiff once dry or rough to the touch, but this time there was almost none of that! If anything, my hair felt more settled overall than before the treatment. The fact that changing color didn't really damage my hair was the most satisfying part!

The first time I looked in the mirror, it came out so much more natural and full of mood than I expected!!!! Not too bright, not too dark — a nicely calm brown, and with the matt tone mixed in, it felt way more sophisticated than a regular brown.

Indoors it looks like a natural, calm brown, but out in the light the matt tone shows through subtly and it's even prettier!! So, so, SO satisfied! Before the color vs. three days after

I always worry about damage whenever I dye my hair, but the extra clinic treatment they added in was more thorough and longer than I expected, so my hair stayed soft even after everything was done. Thanks to Hair Onsae's designer Kio, who carefully handled everything from color consultation to the dye and clinic, my fall image change was a success 🤎🍂
