Goyang Korean restaurant: huge boneless flounder soup at Haenon

In short

Haenon Miyeok Ilsan Direct Branch is a Korean restaurant in Aenigol, Goyang, Gyeonggi, serving seaweed soup set meals. We ordered two boneless flounder seaweed soup sets for 19,000 won per person and loved the generous earthenware pots, perilla-seed broth, neat sides, and self-bar braised tofu. Verdict: a hearty meal I would gladly return for with my parents.

Signature dish at Haenon Miyeok Ilsan Direct Branch

With cool breezes blowing in the mornings and evenings lately, I have been craving hot dishes with deep, warming broth. Wanting a proper nourishing meal with my husband for the first time in a while, we visited Haenon Miyeok Ilsan Direct Branch (해논미역 일산직영점), a well-known spot in Aenigol, Ilsan for its neat, abundant full-table spreads. I was amazed by the rich seaweed soup packed with the depth of the sea and the lovingly prepared side dishes, and both my husband and I scraped our earthenware pots clean—here is my honest review of this Goyang rice-meal restaurant!

A hearty Korean restaurant in Ilsan with deeply flavorful food

A spacious dedicated parking lot and standalone building

When going out for a family meal or taking your parents to dinner, parking convenience is the first thing you check, right? Haenon Miyeok Ilsan Direct Branch has a very large, roomy dedicated parking lot in front of the building, so you can visit without parking worries. The spaces are wide too, making it easy even for new drivers to park with confidence.

We visited in the evening, when soft indirect lighting along the clean, modern exterior of the standalone building created an atmospheric mood, like arriving at an upscale gallery or refined Korean set-menu restaurant. The stylish calligraphy sign at the entrance and lush green potted plants gave us such a warm welcome that I was already happy walking in.

Step inside and an impressive yet cozy atmosphere, on a whole different level from an ordinary restaurant, unfolds before you. The lofty ceiling opens up in a wooden arched structure for wonderful airiness, while soft lighting and upscale wood-tone furnishings make the space feel calm and special.

The ink-wash-style mural decorating the walls was especially striking. Beautifully depicting haenyeo (Korean women divers) working in the sea alongside fresh natural ingredients, it conveys the restaurant's traditions and philosophy so clearly.

The tables are also spaced far apart, making this ideal for a family gathering, company dinner, or an intimate birthday meal with your parents. Each table has tablet ordering, so placing an order was easy too.

The self-bar braised tofu you should not miss

Near the entrance, a clean, well-maintained Self Bar lets you freely refill the neatly prepared side dishes without feeling self-conscious. When you are eating, you always want more of the delicious sides, and everything was arranged hygienically with lids and dedicated tongs, so I felt comfortable using it.

💡 Kkaebi’s top tip! There is braised tofu available only at the self bar, not in the initial table setting! It is wonderfully savory because the seasoning has soaked right in, so be sure to grab some from the self bar.

Seaweed soup set-menu choices and our order

My husband and I ordered the boneless flounder seaweed soup set (₩19,000 per person) for two, since we could enjoy the soft fish easily without having to pick out any bones!

A neat initial spread with salad and japchae

Not long after ordering, a neat full-table spread filled our large table. What first caught my eye was the fresh salad on a big plate, piled with crisp vegetables and plenty of nutty black-sesame dressing. It was the perfect appetizer to wake up the palate.

There was also glossy japchae (stir-fried glass noodles), a favorite for all ages; rich, spicy napa cabbage kimchi made in-house; savory, salty stir-fried seasoned seaweed flakes that kept calling my hand back; and grilled flounder coated in red seasoning. None of the sides was overly seasoned, and every one felt lovingly made—I could really sense the skill of this Ilsan Korean restaurant.

An enormous earthenware pot loaded with perilla seed powder

Soon, the boneless flounder seaweed soup arrived at a furious bubble, and the enormous earthenware pot made my jaw drop the moment it came out. It was far bigger than a typical pot, so the portion was truly generous!

💡 Takeout tip for light eaters! The serving is so abundant that if you usually eat small portions, it might be smart and satisfying to portion out about half before your meal into a dedicated takeout container (₩1,000). Only the soup can be packed up after eating!

The second I tasted a spoonful of broth, I could not help but gasp and started ladling it up. Haha. Generously packed with nutty perilla seed powder, the thick, milky broth warmed me deeply from within, as if I were having a restorative mountain-ginseng dish. It was clean rather than oily, yet had a weighty, deep umami flavor from the sea.

Boneless flounder paired with sea-scented rice

The amount of flounder in the pot was honestly next level. Because it was boneless, there was absolutely no fussing with bones or fish spines, which made it so easy to eat. Every time I dipped in a spoon, large, thick pieces of pale flounder flesh came up—there was no skimping at all. The fish was tender rather than dry, melting softly in my mouth with the seaweed.

Even the rice that came with it was not ordinary. It had a subtle seaweed aroma, and soaking it well in the seaweed soup filled my mouth with a gentle scent of the ocean and an absolutely fantastic balance of umami. You can even get refills if you want. With a bite of the house-made spicy kimchi on top, a bowl of rice and that whole earthenware pot disappeared in no time.

A place I want to revisit with my parents

If you are looking in Ilsan Aenigol for a meal to treat your parents to, or for hearty Korean food that sits comfortably, Haenon Miyeok Ilsan Direct Branch is an Ilsan rice-meal restaurant I would recommend without hesitation.

  • A vast dedicated parking lot means zero parking stress!
  • Elegant, clean gallery-like interiors and kind service
  • A premium broth, rich and deep like restorative food thanks to plenty of perilla seed powder
  • Generous boneless flounder in every spoonful, neat sides, and self-bar braised tofu—perfect!

It was the perfect meal for warming and filling both body and heart. I am definitely planning to return with my parents soon!
