Window-seat pork neck BBQ in Yangju with nurungji rice: Mat Chandeul

In short

Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Yangju Branch is a 336-hour chilled-aged pork barbecue restaurant on Okjeongdong-ro 7da-gil in Yangju, Gyeonggi. At a window seat with the window left open, the order was two servings of 14-day aged raw pork neck (mokssal), one serving of ogyeopsal (extra-fatty belly) and bibim naengsomyeon (spicy cold thin noodles), plus the lunch special of stone-pot rice for two and doenjang stew, scraped down to the crisp nurungji at the bottom. Staff grilled every piece from start to finish and suggested the dipping combos, making Mat Chandeul an easy lunch stop for aged pork.

The in-store aging chamber and the window seats at Mat Chandeul

As soon as you walk in, there's an aging chamber where domestic pork is chilled-aged for over 336 hours ✨ They also weigh out the meat portions carefully, which builds even more trust 👍🏻

The interior is clean with plenty of seating. Tables can be pushed together, so it looks like a good fit for work dinners, group gatherings, or family outings too!

Personally, I loved the window seat!! They leave the window wide open, so it feels like eating on an outdoor terrace 🍃

In-store sign explaining misconceptions about pork

There's also a sign that clears up misconceptions about pork!💡 It covers pork fat and explains that pork shouldn't be overcooked — grilling it just right brings out the juiciness and flavor. I always assumed pork had to be cooked through completely, but reading this made me rethink that haha.

Side dishes and dipping sauce combos

The table filled up with a variety of side dishes!! There's Mat Chandeul's signature seasoned bean sprouts, along with wrap greens, pickled vegetables, and aged kimchi.

Dipping sauces including wasabi, salted shrimp and salted skate innards

On top of that there's wasabi, salted shrimp, salted skate innards, ssamjang (dipping paste), garlic, salt, and salted pollock roe — all pairing well with grilled meat, so you can try a different combo with every bite!

14-day aged pork neck and ogyeopsal, grilled by the staff

We ordered 2 servings of aged raw pork neck and 1 serving of aged raw ogyeopsal! 🥩 You can check the exact gram weight.

The staff grill it from start to finish!👍🏻 Aged meat can easily end up burnt outside and undercooked inside, but since they grilled it for us we could just relax and eat, haha.

Watching the meat and fat sizzle together while it cooked was so mouthwatering,,,🤤

Aged pork neck and belly grilling on the plate

With the staff grilling everything to the perfect point, the visuals were insane🔥 Worth every second of waiting!!🤤

Perfectly grilled aged pork

The staff even put together a signature Mat Chandeul combo with the side dishes and explained it to us!✨ Hearing which combination tastes best had me practically bouncing in my seat, wanting to dig in right away 🙌🏻

How the bibim naengsomyeon ate alongside the pork

The bibim naengsomyeon (spicy cold thin noodles) showed up at the perfect moment!✨ I got excited thinking about wrapping it with the meat💓 You can't skip noodles or naengmyeon when eating meat, right, haha.

They pour in the broth and mix the noodles for you👍🏻 As the broth mixes in, the noodles loosen up and a spicy-tangy aroma rises.

Once mixed, it already looks delicious🤤 It's the tangy-sweet flavor I expected, and it woke my appetite right up.

With so many side dishes, we got to eat all kinds of combinations, which I loved🩷

Lunch special: stone-pot rice for two, doenjang stew and the nurungji

Turns out there's a lunch special where ordering 3 servings of meat between 11:30-17:00 gets you 2 servings of stone-pot rice and doenjang stew free!🫢🫢

Stone-pot rice served as part of the lunch special

The stone-pot rice came with roasted seaweed and seasoned soy sauce, so of course we had to try it!! Wrapping the rice in seaweed felt like a nostalgic home-cooked meal, haha.

Once the stone-pot rice arrives, it's basically the rule to scoop out the rice and pour in the scorched-rice tea (sungnyung) to make nurungji (crispy scorched rice)!✨ I personally prefer softer things like porridge or nurungji over plain rice, so I was thrilled haha🥺💛 Scraping up the nurungji with hot sungnyung, it was savory and soft and went down easily.

Here's the doenjang stew that came with the stone-pot rice!

Free doenjang stew from the lunch special

Even though it's a free side dish from the lunch special, the portion is generous😱 Stirring it with a spoon, there's still so much in it,,,👍🏻

Doenjang stew packed with ingredients

With doenjang stew and stone-pot rice both on the table, there was no way not to eat more, full or not, hahaha.

Table cleared after finishing the meal

Looking back at the photo, all that's left are traces of the meal, lol🤣 I guess that means I was serious about eating that day, haha.

Honest verdict: would I go back to Mat Chandeul in Yangju?

My honest take on Mat Chandeul, the pork belly spot in Okjeong, is that you can eat comfortably without worrying about grilling, and there are so many side dishes to pair with the meat that you keep switching things up and just keep eating — endlessly, and happily!!

Best of all, ordering 3 servings of meat at lunch gets you stone-pot rice and doenjang stew too, so it's a solid choice for a lunchtime meat meal!😙 And since there are multiple parking lots instead of just one, it was also convenient to visit by car🚗

Whenever I'm craving ogyeopsal or pork neck, Mat Chandeul in Okjeong is always the first place that comes to mind. It's not a one-and-done kind of place — the flavor keeps pulling you back, lol.

Would I revisit: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
