What the dining room feels like

The interior was clean and comfortable overall! It looked like a great spot to come with family or friends for BBQ.

The tables were spaced well enough that I never felt cramped during the meal, and the staff were friendly, which made for a pleasant dining experience!

The menu at Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui, a popular BBQ spot in Yangju, had a wide range of meat options including pork!

Table set with 3 servings of 14-day aged fresh pork belly

This time I ordered the most classic option to try — 14-day aged fresh pork belly (3 servings), haha.

Which side dishes come with the pork belly?

Yuzu radish salad and seasoned bean sprouts with scallion
Aged kimchi served with salt and wasabi

Once we ordered the meat, the side dishes came out too — yuzu radish salad, seasoned bean sprouts with scallion, and aged kimchi (묵은지), along with salt and wasabi!

Rather than just eating the meat plain, having these sides made it fun to mix up combinations depending on my mood.

Staff grill the samgyeopsal at your table

After ordering, a staff member grilled the meat for us directly, so we could relax and get ready to eat while waiting!

While the meat was cooking, the staff grilled it to just the right doneness, so I didn't have to keep checking on it myself, haha.

I tried the pork belly right when it was nicely browned! The outside was golden while the inside stayed juicy, which made for a great texture.

I could really taste the tender, soft texture that's characteristic of pork belly, which made it even better!

How to eat it: salt, aged kimchi and yuzu radish salad

First I tried a piece of the meat plain, without any sides.

A plain piece of pork belly with no sides

After tasting the savory flavor of the meat itself, I dipped it lightly in salt — and yeah, pork belly really is best enjoyed with a bit of salt to keep it clean-tasting, haha.

Pork belly lightly dipped in salt

Rather than dipping heavily, a light touch of salt was better for tasting the meat! The savory flavor combined with a bit of saltiness made for a solid basic combo.

And the staff kept topping the meat with different combinations of side dishes!

I tried a bite of well-grilled pork belly topped with aged kimchi and yuzu radish salad together.

The savory, tender pork belly paired really well with the tangy, deep flavors of the yuzu radish salad and aged kimchi!

Aged kimchi tasted even better eaten with the meat than on its own as a side dish, haha.

After a few bites of just meat, adding aged kimchi changed the flavor in my mouth, so I kept switching up the combinations!

Rather than sticking to one way of eating it, being able to try so many combinations meant I never got tired of it, right to the end.

The lunch special: two stone-pot rices and doenjang stew

And with the lunch special, ordering 3 servings of meat gets you 2 servings of stone-pot rice plus doenjang stew (soybean paste stew), haha.

Stone-pot rice and doenjang stew served as part of the lunch special

The doenjang stew went really well with meat and rice! Eating a spoonful of stew alongside the rice now and then helped cut through the richness of the meat a bit.

The stone-pot rice was great to eat on its own, but also good for adding small bites of meat and side dishes, haha.

With the pork belly plus stone-pot rice and doenjang stew, the whole meal felt a lot more filling!
