Cooler bag takeaway and fig campagne at Mandong Jegwa, Yeonnam bakery

In short

Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch is a takeaway-only bakery in Seodaemun, Seoul, near exit 3 of Hongik University Station, at the entrance to the Dongjin Market alley. The visit came home with the signature garlic baguette (₩7,000), a shrimp baguette, sausage bread, and fig campagne, all packed in a cooler bag (extra charge) to survive the summer heat. Verdict: worth the hype, and best paired with a coffee from a nearby café afterward.

Mandong Jegwa is a total must-stop on the Yeonnam-dong bakery pilgrimage, and I finally went without hesitating any longer! I'd heard so much buzz about it that I was curious, and the second I stepped inside, the nutty, sweet smell of fresh bread instantly put me in a good mood (๑˙ꄃ˙๑)♡⃛

Location and parking at Mandong Jegwa Yeonnam Branch

It's close to exit 3 of Hongik University Station and sits right at the entrance to the alley leading into Dongjin Market in Yeonnam-dong, so it's really easy to find! Unfortunately there's no dedicated parking for the shop, so you'll need to use public transit or a nearby public parking lot.

The inside is small but kept really clean and tidy!

Browsing the display and the taste samples

The display case was packed full of gorgeous-looking bread, and just looking at it made me happy. The staff were super friendly too, so I got to pick out bread in a great mood the whole time (•̀ᴗ•́)♡⃛

And they gave out samples while I was browsing haha — pretzel and even bacon baguette! Every single bite was delicious ㅠㅠㅠ

Garlic baguette, ₩7,000 — the best of my life

The first thing I grabbed was the signature menu item, the garlic baguette, at ₩7,000, and it's genuinely not overpriced at all! The garlic sauce soaks the inside of the baguette so thoroughly it's amazing. One bite and a sharp, sweet garlic flavor floods your mouth — I'm calling this the best garlic baguette of my life.

Shrimp baguette

The shrimp baguette I brought home too was genuinely better than I imagined! The baguette is packed with savory, salty shrimp, and every bite has a satisfying pop of texture. The combo of bread and seafood feels fresh, and it's hard to stop reaching for more.

Sausage bread and fig campagne

I also picked up the sausage bread, perfect for a snack when you're a little hungry! The bouncy sausage texture paired with the mild bread disappeared in no time once I got home. The fig campagne got more savory and sweet the more I chewed, with just the right amount of fig — not too much, nicely mild, and really satisfying (๑>ᴗ<๑)♡⃛

Breads to try next time

There were so many kinds of bread it was genuinely fun just browsing — the ciabatta looked super chewy and mild, so I want to try that next visit! I'm also planning to try the refreshing-looking cucumber baguette, the flavor-packed basil tomato bread, and the onion bagel.

Cooler bag for hot days, plus a tip for where to eat

Honestly, this place is great,,,!! On hot days like these, they let you add a cooler bag for an extra charge so your bread doesn't spoil during the trip home! I smartly added one and carried everything home nice and fresh.

And here's a genuinely useful tip for shopping at Mandong Jegwa! If you head to the nearby Ediya Coffee and order one drink per person, you can sit and enjoy the bread you bought from Mandong Jegwa right there in the café! For anyone bummed that it's takeaway only, this is the best info you'll get.
