Spicy red broth with 140g sirloin at a Suji shabu-kalguksu: Yun Ujae

In short

Yun Ujae Shabu Kalguksu Gogidong Branch is a shabu-kalguksu (hot pot with knife-cut noodles) restaurant in Gogi-dong, Suji, Yongin, where diners choose between a red broth and a white broth. On this repeat visit the order was the spicy red broth topped with minari (water dropwort) and mushrooms, plus a 140g sirloin add-on, eaten as a course that ends with kalguksu noodles and fried rice. Yun Ujae is the kind of place worth returning to on a day when spicy broth is what you want.

Hello haha! I'm back with a story about Yun Ujae Shabu Kalguksu Gogidong Branch (윤우재 샤브칼국수 고기동점), a well-known spot in Dongcheon-dong, Suji, Yongin — this time with sirloin, red broth, and a minari-mushroom combo!

Dongcheon-dong, Suji, Yongin restaurant recommendation: "Yun Ujae Shabu Kalguksu Gogidong Branch" — sirloin, spicy shabu, minari and mushroom shabu-shabu

Yun Ujae Shabu Kalguksu Gogidong Branch is one of the places I've visited many times in Suji, Yongin! It wasn't just a one-time 'this was good' kind of place — whenever I crave shabu-kalguksu, my feet naturally carry me back here. This was already my N-th visit, and somehow, on days when I want the spicy red shabu, this is where I end up.

Yun Ujae Gogidong Branch hours and parking

Yun Ujae Shabu Kalguksu Gogidong Branch is open 11:00–20:50, with last order at 20:00. Break time is weekdays 15:00–16:30, and there's a large parking space right in front of the restaurant.

The hours were written out in detail, so it's worth taking a look!

Inside Yun Ujae: dining room and waiting area

It's popular enough to have its own indoor waiting area :) But don't worry, the line moves fast! I ordered my usual — the spicy red shabu, meaning the red shabu-kalguksu.

What comes with the red broth, minari and mushrooms?

At Yun Ujae Shabu Kalguksu you can choose between red broth and white broth, and this time I went with the spicy red broth. It comes out in a big pot, with minari (water dropwort) and mushrooms piled generously on top.

The basic table setting at Yun Ujae

Basic shabu-kalguksu table setting

Yun Ujae lets you choose between red and white broth — both are delicious, but this time the spicy red broth was what I was craving! It comes in a big pot with minari and mushrooms piled on top, and the moment it lands on the table, the fragrant minari smell rises up and gets the appetite going, hehe.

I especially love minari, so this combo is right up my alley! The fragrant minari cuts through the spicy broth so it feels clean rather than heavy, and once the mushrooms simmer in, their flavor deepens the broth even more~

Red broth made with bone broth and chili powder

The basic setup is red broth with minari and mushrooms, and the red broth is described as a spicy style made by adding chili powder to a bone broth base!

How the 140g sirloin add-on tasted in shabu-shabu

At Yun Ujae Gogidong Branch you can add sirloin in 140g portions. Dip the thinly sliced sirloin briefly into the spicy broth to cook, and you get all the soft, savory flavor intact!

Tender sirloin, shabu-shabu style! Meat is essential for shabu-shabu, and Yun Ujae says it uses fresh Australian beef for the shabu meat — sliced thin so that when cooked shabu-shabu style, you get soft, savory texture, with careful attention paid to meat handling!

I like to scoop up minari and mushrooms together with the sirloin and eat them all at once~ Rather than just eating the beef alone, adding fragrant minari and chewy mushrooms makes the texture so much richer, and with the spicy broth alongside, my chopsticks just kept going back. Hehe.

Cook the minari briefly in the spicy broth and the aroma really comes alive, while the mushrooms soak up the broth so every bite is moist with that broth flavor. The basic set already comes with vegetables and mushrooms, but if you love them, you can add more — like me — with the mixed mushroom-minari platter, minari, or mushrooms. The mixed platter is ₩5,000, and minari and oyster mushroom are ₩4,000 each!

Eating the shabu isn't the end! One reason I keep coming back to Yun Ujae is the way it flows into kalguksu (noodles) and fried rice! After eating your fill of meat and vegetables, you add kalguksu noodles to the broth, and it takes on a totally different flavor from the clear broth at the start.

House-made kalguksu noodles at Yun Ujae

Yun Ujae describes itself as making its own noodles in-house. After finishing the shabu, I added a portion of kalguksu noodles to the spicy broth.

Why Yun Ujae is worth coming back to

Since I've already visited Yun Ujae Shabu Kalguksu so many times, I don't really pick a special menu each time — I just naturally end up with the shabu + sirloin + minari and mushroom combo! Cooking tender sirloin shabu-shabu style in the spicy broth, scooping up fragrant minari and mushrooms, then moving on to kalguksu noodles and fried rice — the whole progression feels like a set course, and it's so satisfying~

And to finish it off, fried rice! Getting to eat rice too makes the whole meal feel really complete. The fried rice, soaked in the spicy broth and minari aroma, might be this place's other big charm 👍👍

When is the best day to visit Yun Ujae?

If you're near Dongcheon-dong or Gogidong in Suji, Yongin, and craving spicy shabu-kalguksu, or want a warm meal out with family or friends, this is a great place to visit! If you love spicy red shabu, minari, and mushrooms like I do, you'll likely be pretty satisfied. I'm already on my N-th visit, and I suspect I'll be thinking of it again whenever the weather turns chilly or a spicy broth craving hits. There really is a reason I keep coming back :)
