Menbosha and udon at a Namcheon-dong Japanese restaurant: Daidokoro

In short

Daidokoro Gwangalli Main Branch is a Japanese home-style restaurant on the second floor of a Namcheon-dong alley in Suyeong, Busan, a 10-minute walk from Geumnyeonsan Station, where it has been open for more than 10 years. A family of four, joined late by dad after his evening shift, shared the 39,500-won Jadu two-person set plus menbosha (deep-fried shrimp toast), udon, a one-gulp draft beer and milk pudding, and rated the 100-hour aged curry and the karaage highest. Daidokoro is an easy, comfortable choice for lunch or dinner with two young kids.

Signature photo of Japanese home-style food at Daidokoro Gwangalli Main Branch

Today I'm bringing you our visit to Daidokoro, a Japanese home-style restaurant in Gwangalli, that we all went to as a family after Chaechae's dad finished his evening work! I'd been curious since I heard it's been in the same spot for over 10 years, and honestly, from the curry to the tonkatsu to the karaage, the quality was on another level haha. It's near Namcheon-dong so it's easy to get to, and it's a 10-minute walk from Geumnyeonsan Station, so it's convenient by public transit too.

What the Dotonbori-style dining room looks like

Daidokoro wall filled with photos and drawings

I saw the Daidokoro sign at the door and walked in, and the moment I stepped inside it really felt like a little shop on a Japanese back alley haha. Each table had cute little props arranged on it, and the walls were covered with doodles and photos drawn by waiting customers, so it was fun just looking around.

Curry, tonkatsu, karaage and udon: what came with the set

Crispy fried tonkatsu
Plate of crispy-outside, juicy-inside karaage
Udon included with the set

This restaurant's signature is definitely the 100-hour aged curry! It's nutty and smooth, good down to the last spoonful. I also liked that the curry sauce comes on the side, so you can pour as much as you want over the rice.

They say the tonkatsu is made with meat prepped that same day — crispy outside and juicy inside, so even the kids ate it well. The karaage really lived up to the phrase 'crispy outside, tender inside' — a flavor everyone, young and old, would love.

Mentbosha included in the set menu
Cross-section of mentbosha packed with shrimp
A bowl of mild-broth udon

Mentbosha (fried shrimp toast) is also included in the set menu haha. The crispy fried coating was packed full of shrimp inside, a real treat. The udon broth was mild and deep, perfectly suited to the kids' taste too.

Our family of four's late dinner at Daidokoro, dish by dish

Jadu ade and mini draft beer
Milk pudding served for dessert

Chaechae's dad joined late after finishing his evening work, but the jadu ade and mini draft beer washed away his whole day's fatigue haha. Chaechae's older and younger kids really tucked into the udon and karaage, saying they were full but never putting their chopsticks down lol.

The kids inhaled the milk pudding the moment they finished their rice hahaha. I actually work near this neighborhood and have come here many times paying out of my own pocket, and it's satisfying every single time. It was a happy evening where all four of us ate until we were stuffed.
