Sannaemaeul Yang Kkochi & Qingdao is a great lamb skewer spot. I ordered a bunch of Chinese dishes that go well with lamb skewers too. So which Chinese dish actually pairs best with lamb skewers? Here's my BEST 3!

The oily, tender lamb rib skewer, the spicy tingling mala xiangguo, the crisp bean sprouts, and the sweet crunchy finish of the bread skewer — a flawless sweet-salty-spicy combo!
What to order with lamb skewers when the skewers alone get boring

On the way home from work or on weekend evenings, I often find myself craving lamb skewers. Watching the skewers spin round and round and pulling off piece after piece is fun, but somehow after a while something feels missing, and the richness starts to wear me down... So this time I changed my strategy entirely: enjoy the lamb skewers in one impactful, delicious cut (lamb rib meat!), and pair them with Chinese dishes that fill in the gaps on the table.

To answer this question, I tested three combinations myself at Sannaemaeul Yang Kkochi in Unjeong, Paju: bean sprout stir-fry that washes away the grease with its crunch, mala xiangguo that hits your tongue with a fiery, tingling flavor, and bread skewers that finish things off sweetly. Today's freshly written record rivaled any course meal!

Side dishes and the charcoal grill setup at Sannaemaeul Yang Kkochi & Qingdao
Sannaemaeul Yang Kkochi & Qingdao is a well-known lamb skewer spot in Unjeong. The basic side dishes are pickled mustard greens, radish salad, peanuts, and pickled onion — simple staples that quietly make the food taste even better.

They pile the charcoal in generously too. Ready to grill today's lamb skewers, charcoal — count on you!

We visited as two people today and ate ₩47,000 worth of food. And of that, the bean sprout stir-fry came out as a complimentary service item! So which Chinese dish would end up pairing best with the lamb skewers (lamb rib meat skewers)?
Bread skewers: the dessert skewer I'd never seen before

This was my first time seeing this at a skewer restaurant, so it felt a bit unfamiliar! Curious, I ordered the bread skewers, and they grabbed attention the moment they arrived. Thick-cut slices of bread were skewered whole on two metal rods side by side, their surface glossy with butter and a sweet condensed milk sauce, dotted with black sesame seeds.

You shouldn't grill this bread skewer directly over the slots for the lamb skewers — just resting it on top is enough to cook it well. The outside develops a crispy crust while the inside stays moist and soft, almost pillowy.

Eaten after a good amount of salty, rich lamb rib and spicy tingling mala xiangguo, it soothes your overstimulated tongue with something soft and sweet — a perfect dessert role. It looks unassuming, but it's weirdly addictive; I kept reaching for more. Highly recommend as a finishing treat!
Lamb skewers vs lamb rib meat skewers: 8 skewers, 300g compared

Here's the lamb rib meat skewer we ordered! The moment it arrived, I was struck by how thick and hefty it looked. Usually when you order lamb skewers elsewhere, you get neatly squared-off cubes of meat, but here, 8 skewers came to nearly 300g, so the sheer size of the meat is on a different level :) The bright red meat and creamy white fat wrapped thickly and dimensionally around the skewer, following the grain — both the freshness and the thickness were overwhelming.

Once on the charcoal, because the meat was so thick, you could actually watch in real time as the outside crisped up while the juices stayed locked inside 0_0

The moment I bit into a well-grilled skewer, savory fat and juices burst and coated my tongue haha. There was no toughness or gamey smell at all, and the springy chewiness unique to rib meat was there while still melting down smoothly after just a few bites — so good!

Since each piece of meat was so large, the volume and depth of flavor filling your mouth was different from usual. Even with just a light dip in salt or cumin, the deep, rich lamb aroma itself was so good that I kept being impressed until the very last bite. I really recommend getting lamb rib meat skewers instead of the regular ones at a lamb skewer restaurant :) Today's tip!
Mala tang or mala xiangguo at Sannaemaeul Yang Kkochi & Qingdao?
The moment it landed on the table, an intense charred aroma hit my nose! That distinctive tingling mala scent set off my salivary glands instantly ㅠㅠ The red mala sauce wasn't sitting loosely on top — it clung to every single ingredient, glossy and gleaming. Big whole shrimp, dried tofu, wood ear mushroom, napa cabbage, and bean sprouts were all packed in generously, so every bite offered a different texture.
TIP. For reference, I'd previously had the mala tang at Sannaemaeul Yang Kkochi & Qingdao on an earlier visit, so this might help anyone torn between mala tang and mala xiangguo. Since I had the soup version back then instead of the xiangguo, I can compare the two!

Honestly, both are so good I can barely choose, but personally, at this particular restaurant, I'd recommend the mala xiangguo!
- Reason 1: Mala tang is always delicious anyway... so it felt more like a solid standard, while this restaurant's mala xiangguo felt a bit more special
- Reason 2: I usually prefer mala tang, but after trying both here, I found myself craving the xiangguo more

That distinctive Sichuan peppercorn flavor leaves your tongue tingling. A sharp savoriness fills your mouth, but it's not overwhelmingly spicy. The plump shrimp had the spicy seasoning soaked in deep to the flesh, making for a satisfying bite. It's not just heavy on oil — there's a clear salty, tingling punch that kept my chopsticks moving nonstop :)

Mala xiangguo is great eaten on its own, but pairing a bite of the rich, savory lamb rib skewer with a piece of this mala xiangguo right after is just perfect. The greasy richness of the meat and the tingling spiciness of the xiangguo lock together, lifting each other's flavors — the best pairing of the day.
The free bean sprout stir-fry that cuts through the lamb fat

It seemed to have been quickly stir-fried over high heat in the wok for a short time, because the sprouts hadn't wilted into a watery mess — each strand kept its springy, firm texture. The moment you bring it close to your nose, a subtle smoky aroma along with a tangy, salty vinegar-based flavor sharpens your appetite.

The instant you take a hearty bite with your chopsticks, you get a clean crunch and a burst of vegetable juice. The umami of oyster sauce, a pleasant tang, and a slight sharpness from dried chili come together for a refreshing taste that gets better the more you chew. It really goes well eaten alongside the lamb skewers!
