Ulsan black pork restaurant with myeongi and wasabi wraps: Daewol
In short
Daewol Charcoal Barbecue is a black pork restaurant in Dal-dong, Nam-gu, Ulsan, near Goodmorning Hospital, serving only Jirye black pork from Gimcheon. The writer booked a table and came with her mom, ordering the black pork platter with two bowls of rice and doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), grilling ogeopsal (pork belly), mokssal (neck) and jeonji (foreleg) in that order before adding more ogeopsal, and the best bite was meat wrapped in myeongi namul (pickled mountain leek) with wasabi. With banga leaf among the side dishes and 3 hours of parking covered, Daewol Charcoal Barbecue is an easy recommendation for black pork in Ulsan.

Opening this post with a big recommendation because the black pork place I visited a few days ago was seriously, seriously delicious!!! It's a pork restaurant near Goodmorning Hospital in Dal-dong, Ulsan, and wow, I ate so well there!!

Where is Daewol Charcoal Barbecue in Dal-dong, Ulsan, and where do you park?
This is Daewol Charcoal Barbecue! The place looks like it hasn't been open long, but everything felt so well run and disciplined — put me in a good mood. And they support parking too! There's a lot right near the GS25 nearby, and if you eat there they give you 3 hours of free parking!! Isn't that great???

I especially love black pork — it has a way chewier texture than regular pork, right? Walked in with high expectations…

Inside Daewol Charcoal Barbecue: private rooms and a 1980s-style interior
Here's the inside! Open and fairly spacious. There's a room inside too, and reservations are possible, so it seemed like a big group gathering would work fine here too! The interior overall had a 1980s vibe — felt like eating at an old-school local favorite, and it was cutely decorated.

The menu is organized like this, and the prices are pretty reasonable too!!

Ordering the black pork platter with two bowls of rice and doenjang jjigae
We first ordered the black pork platter, two bowls of rice, and of course doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) — can't skip that. We had reserved ahead, so everything was already set up when we arrived!!

Side dishes and wrap greens, including banga leaf
The basic side dishes included salad, miyeok (seaweed), pickled onions, wrap vegetables, myeongi namul (mountain leek pickle), wasabi, doenjang (soybean paste), garlic, and more — but unusually, they gave us banga (fragrant mint leaf) along with the wrap vegetables! My mom loves the smell of banga, so she was like, oh? They give banga here, nice~ haha.

Myeongi namul and wasabi: the best way to wrap the pork
I have a personal standard for how well a BBQ place is run, and it's this: do they give you myeongi namul and wasabi or not. This place is definitely run by an owner who really knows what they're doing, ㅠㅠ They nailed it with the myeongi namul and wasabi. The wasabi looked freshly ground, different from the usual store-bought kind. It was delicious!!!

There's also a menu on the wall besides the tablet, and looking again, I see they sell hanwoo (Korean beef) too!

Why Daewol Charcoal Barbecue serves only Jirye black pork from Gimcheon
Daewol Charcoal Barbecue only serves Jirye black pork from Gimcheon! Black pork is already chewy — imagine how good this must taste, right??

At the table, there was even a thoughtful little touch from the owner — hair bands were already set out ㅠㅜ I think the owner was a man, but how did he think of something so considerate.

After a short wait, they brought out the black pork platter beautifully arranged like this! The color of the meat is really good, right?

And the vegetable skewer ㅋㅋㅋ so cute. Looked like they give you one more skewer each time you add more meat. The tomato was really sweet and delicious.

Such an exciting shot. About to grill it nicely and eat it with myeongi namul and wasabi on top 😵

On the pork belly, you can actually see the hair follicles from the black pig!! Proof it's real black pork…

Ogeopsal, mokssal and jeonji: how does each cut taste?
They told us to grill the black pork platter in the order of ogeopsal (pork belly), mokssal (neck), and jeonji (foreleg)! The meat of the pork belly was obviously great, but the skin part was so chewy and crispy!! So delicious…

Second up, mokssal (neck)! Mokssal has a clean, tender texture, similar to regular pork. Just solid and reliable!!

And then jeonji, which sounded like a plain name — turns out it means foreleg meat when I asked! This one was really unique — the meat part felt tender, similar to mokssal, but the fat and skin part were chewy and crispy in a way that was different from both mokssal and ogeopsal!!! We ended up ordering extra ogeopsal to keep eating! My mom said it had been such a long time since she'd had such a genuinely delicious BBQ place 🥹🥹

Finishing with doenjang jjigae, plus free silkworm pupa and plum tea
And then doenjang jjigae for dessert — this place makes it well!! With cheongyang chili in it, spicy and just plain delicious doenjang jjigae… I'd absolutely recommend ordering it. Next to it is the complimentary silkworm pupa haha.

After happily finishing our meal and getting ready to leave, they had plum tea ready! Perfect for cleansing the palate! Visiting a restaurant that took such thoughtful care of every detail left me full in both stomach and heart the whole way home! If you're heading out for black pork in Ulsan, definitely visit Daewol Charcoal Barbecue!!
