Ansan grilled pork ribs with bibim naengmyeon combo: Cheongnyuok

I went to Cheongnyuok, a BBQ restaurant on Bandalseom island, for thick pork ribs in a perfectly balanced sweet-and-salty sauce that wasn't too intense, along with a spicy chadol doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew with beef brisket).

Everything from the meat to the side dishes came out clean and well put together, making for a great meal. Hanu pork ribs, bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles), and chadol doenjang jjigae turned out to be a perfect combo.

First impressions: a spacious, comfortable dining room

What caught my eye first at Cheongnyuok was the clean, polished atmosphere. The tables were also spaced far apart, so it never felt cramped. With plenty of seating, it looked like a good spot for a family meal or for a Bandalseom company dinner or gathering, too.

Cheongnyuok has a wide range of meat menu items — pork belly, beef, hanwoo (Korean beef), and more — but I visited after hearing the hanu pork ribs marinated in a special sauce were the standout. So I centered the order around Cheongnyuok's signature hanu pork ribs, plus bibim naengmyeon and chadol doenjang jjigae.

A subtle charcoal aroma added to the flavor, and being thick, the meat had a great chewy texture. The sauce was a well-balanced sweet-and-salty flavor, not too sweet or too salty, which paired well with the meat.

The side dishes that came with it were also plated neatly.

The well-fermented pa-kimchi (green onion kimchi) and the sweet-and-spicy yangnyeom gejang (marinated raw crab) went really well with the pork ribs. Having a variety of side dishes to pair with the meat made it fun to mix things up between bites.
