In short

Tareudang is a takeout dessert café in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, serving fresh fruit glutinous rice mochi. A late visit left only fig yogurt and pineapple, but the soft mochi, whipped cream, and juice-filled fruit were memorable. Verdict: eat Tareudang’s fruit mochi as quickly as possible.

Fruit mochi found in Hwangridan-gil

I’d been seeing fruit mochi all over social media and wanted to try it, and then I found Tareudang (타르당) while looking around Gyeongju’s Hwangridan-gil, so I went straight in!!! I also saw captures from Tareudang’s Instagram videos, and look at all that fruit~ The most important thing is that the chewy glutinous rice cake stretches loooong, but it was hard to film while eating on the street, so I brought some back instead.

Fruit mochi that sells out if you arrive late

Tareudang’s bright orange storefront is so cute you can’t walk past it, and since it is a takeout-only shop, you can choose your treats right out front. There are fresh chocolate, peach yogurt, mango yogurt, fig yogurt, pineapple, and gold kiwi, but I visited late and almost everything was sold out, so hurry!!!

  • Fresh chocolate ₩6,000
  • Peach yogurt ₩7,000
  • Mango yogurt ₩7,500
  • Fig yogurt ₩5,500
  • Pineapple ₩5,500
  • Gold kiwi ₩5,500

But the amazing part is that buying four or more mochi gets you ₩500 off each one! I love fruit mochi and always have it when I go out, so I was excited—and if you can, I think it would be best to try every flavor~

The remaining fig yogurt and pineapple

This flavor! Once you know it, you have no choice but to eat it again. They also have watermelon juice, so having it with fruit mochi seems like it would take care of both hydration and a sugar boost in hot summer weather! Fresh chocolate, peach yogurt, mango yogurt, and gold kiwi were all sold out! Only fig yogurt and pineapple remained, but next time I go to Gyeongju, I want to visit early and try the other flavors too.

Can you see the big “Tareudang Hwangnam Giant Mochi” written there?! The illustration is adorably cute too, so I thought about drawing it on my Tareudang mochi photo, but my art skills can’t keep up, so pass~~~

Is fruit mochi best eaten right away?

It seemed like you would need to really brace yourself to eat it on the street, you know?! I also wanted to look around Hwangridan-gil, so I carried it around in the bag just as they packed it and planned to eat it at my accommodation. It is rice cake, so the appearance became even more rice-cake-like, but it was huge!

When buying from Tareudang, I think you should definitely join the review event, put it in the box, and keep it in the insulated bag to hold its shape—and eat it as quickly as possible.

Fruit glutinous rice mochi eaten at the accommodation

Glutinous rice mochi packed with fresh fruit and whipped cream

Tareudang’s fruit mochi has fresh fruit inside glutinous rice mochi and is incredibly soft, so it was impossible to take a pretty photo... There is loads of whipped cream too, and it starts to run out over time, so eat it quickly!

They make and sell everything the same day, so you can feel the freshness. It is packed with red bean paste and fruit, and the shape gets messy the more it moves, but that means the mouthful of juice is no joke and it is wonderfully chewy. The mochi is chewy, and you can properly enjoy the sweet fruit. If you visit late, nearly everything may be sold out and you might not get what you want; they can also close when ingredients run out, so hurry~~~
