Gyeongju café with sold-out tarts and fruit mochi: Tareudang

In short

Tareudang is a takeout dessert café in Hwangridan-gil, Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. By 3:30 p.m., every tart was sold out, but the mango, pineapple, and kiwi fruit mochi had generous fruit and soft cream. Verdict: come early for tarts, or stop by for an easy sweet treat while exploring.

I stopped by Tareudang while walking around Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju because I was craving something sweet.

Visiting Tareudang on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju

Tareudang is a premium takeout dessert shop on Hwangridan-gil in Gyeongju, where you can find both tarts and fruit mochi. It looked like a great place to pick something up and eat while traveling, so I decided to visit.

Tareudang takeout dessert information

I visited at around 3:30 p.m. Unfortunately, every variety of tart was sold out by then. 🥲 I had come specifically for the tarts, so that was a little disappointing, but luckily there were still a few fruit mochi left.

So I chose three: mango mochi, pineapple mochi, and kiwi mochi.

Fruit mochi with seriously generous fruit

The first thing that surprised me was the size of the fruit.

Fruit mochi filled with large pieces of fruit

The fruit inside the mochi was much bigger than I expected, so its presence was obvious at a glance. I had mango, pineapple, and kiwi; each one had a large piece of fruit inside, surrounded by plenty of soft cream.

Mochi filled with fruit and cream

With chewy mochi, fruit, and cream all together, it felt different from a typical rice-cake dessert. You can taste the fruit itself while enjoying the soft cream too, so I think it would suit anyone who loves fruit desserts.

The mango had a lovely sweet fruit flavor, while the pineapple and kiwi were refreshing. Choosing all three meant each had its own charm.

It was a nice dessert for a quick sugar boost while wandering around Hwangridan-gil.

Visit a little earlier for tarts

Sadly, I did not get to try the tarts this time. By the time I arrived at around 3:30 p.m., every tart variety had already sold out.

Notice that all tart varieties were sold out in the afternoon

If tarts are your main reason for visiting, I recommend stopping by a little earlier rather than coming in the late afternoon like I did. According to the owner’s introduction, Tareudang bakes its tarts every morning, follows a bake-and-sell-on-the-same-day policy, and serves them crisp and fresh.

Another feature is that the tarts are made with quality ingredients, including seasonal fruit and carefully selected butter. On my next trip to Gyeongju, I want to visit earlier and try the tarts I missed this time.

A takeout dessert that works well for traveling

Because Tareudang specializes in takeout, it is easy to fit into a Hwangridan-gil itinerary. It is also fairly close to Cheomseongdae Observatory, so they recommend picking up dessert before or after a walk there and enjoying it like a picnic.

Takeout dessert before or after a Cheomseongdae walk

You end up walking around constantly on a Gyeongju trip, and a simple dessert you can hold in your hand is surprisingly useful at times like that. The fruit mochi was especially easy to eat one at a time, making it nice to enjoy while looking around Hwangridan-gil.

Using a cooler pack

A cooler pack is available for an additional ₩1,000.

In summer, or if you will be carrying your dessert around instead of eating it right away, it would be a good idea to add a cooler pack. If you are looking for pretty desserts in Gyeongju or a simple Gyeongju dessert to eat on Hwangridan-gil, Tareudang could be worth a stop.

My biggest regret this time was not getting to try the tarts. Since every variety was already sold out at 3:30 p.m., I would not recommend visiting late if tarts are your goal. Next time, I want to go early and properly try the tarts too. 🍓🥭
