Daegu sushi restaurant near Yeongdae Hospital: ₩12,000 sashimi bowl

In short

Sushi Naru Yeongdae Hospital Main Branch is a Japanese sushi restaurant in Daemyeong-dong, Nam-gu, Daegu, right by Yeongdae Hospital Station. The sashimi rice bowl (₩12,000), salmon bowl or sake-don (₩13,000) and assorted sushi 10 pieces (₩13,000) came with thick-cut fish and generous salmon, and ordering the cold buckwheat noodles lets you swap the side mini udon for three curry croquettes. For value, the ₩12,000 sashimi bowl piled high with fish was the most memorable dish at Sushi Naru.

I tried the sushi, raw fish bowl, and sake-don at Sushi Naru Yeongdae Hospital Main Branch, a Daemyeong-dong restaurant in Daegu. Here's everything worth knowing before you go, from menu prices to the mini udon side and the curry croquette swap you can get with cold buckwheat noodles.

I was trying to figure out what to eat after wrapping up my schedule in Daegu, and suddenly craved sushi, so I headed to Sushi Naru Yeongdae Hospital Main Branch! It's walkable from Yeongdae Hospital Station so accessibility is decent, and beyond sushi they have a pretty wide range of menu items — raw fish bowls, sake-don, other rice bowls, sashimi. Best of all, they slice the fish fresh the moment your order comes in, so as someone who loves fish, I walked in with high expectations :)

Inside Sushi Naru: seating and whether solo dining works

Sushi Naru Yeongdae Hospital Main Branch is split between a long bar table and regular tables further inside. There are also side-by-side seats by the window, so solo dining wouldn't feel awkward at all here.

Even from the outside, it had that unmistakable Japanese sushi restaurant vibe!

Walking in, the long bar table is the first thing you see, with regular table seating set up further back. The overall wood-tone interior gave it a warm, clean feel, and the window seats where you sit side by side meant solo dining wouldn't feel like a big deal. There were quite a few other diners when we visited too!

Sushi Naru slices the fish the moment your order comes in, and they also handle takeout and delivery orders, so during peak hours your food might take a little longer to come out. I'd recommend visiting with some time to spare!

Sushi Naru menu and prices

What I tried at Sushi Naru cost: raw fish bowl ₩12,000, salmon bowl (sake-don) ₩13,000, and assorted sushi 10 pieces ₩13,000. Beyond sushi and rice bowls, the menu also had assorted sashimi, aged sashimi, and side dishes.

Looking at the menu, there were way more options than I expected, haha.

Beyond sushi, there was the raw fish bowl, salmon bowl, pork cutlet bowl, and beef bowl,

as well as assorted sashimi, aged sashimi, and side dishes. What I ended up trying: raw fish bowl ₩12,000, salmon bowl (sake-don) ₩13,000, and assorted sushi 10 pieces ₩13,000! Given today's prices, being able to get a fish-topped dish starting in the low ₩10,000s is amazing. The value here is seriously great!

How to swap the mini udon for curry croquettes

Order anything except noodle dishes at Sushi Naru and you get mini udon as a side. But apparently that mini udon can only be swapped for 3 curry croquettes if you also order the cold buckwheat noodles.

While waiting for our order, they brought out ginger and pickled radish. Here's one handy Sushi Naru tip worth knowing!

Ginger and pickled radish served as basic side dishes

Order anything but noodle dishes and mini udon comes as a side. Interestingly, that mini udon — normally served with other non-noodle dishes — can only be swapped for 3 curry croquettes if you also order the cold buckwheat noodles.

So if you've already ordered cold buckwheat noodles and don't want two noodle dishes, you can swap for croquettes instead! This swap only works when you order the cold buckwheat noodles, so keep that in mind :)

Sashimi rice bowl, ₩12,000, with chogochujang sauce on the side

Sushi Naru's raw fish bowl is ₩12,000, and it came with a generous pile of thick-cut fish. The chogochujang (vinegared chili paste) wasn't drizzled on beforehand — it came on the side, so I could add as much as I wanted to season it myself.

First up, the raw fish bowl!

Sushi Naru's raw fish bowl piled generously with fish

When the bowl arrived, it wasn't one of those bowls piled mostly with vegetables — there was a generous amount of thick-cut fish on top. With radish sprouts, vegetables, egg, and flying fish roe all mixed in, it looked pretty hearty right from the start!

What I appreciated most was that the chogochujang wasn't drizzled on from the start — it came separately. With raw fish bowls, adding too much sauce can drown out the taste of the fish, but here I could add exactly as much as I wanted to season it myself. Factoring in the ₩12,000 price, this was personally the best value menu item for me!

Sake-don salmon bowl, ₩13,000: a note on the seasoning

Sushi Naru's salmon bowl (sake-don) is ₩13,000, with thick, generous pieces of salmon piled on top. There's sauce underneath the rice, and the rice itself is seasoned, so it got a bit salty toward the end.

If you like salmon, the sake-don is worth a look.

A bowl of sake-don topped with thick salmon

From the first bite, each piece of salmon was thick and generous. Even eating it bite by bite with rice, there was still salmon left toward the very end — that's how generous the portion was.

Picking up a piece of salmon from the sake-don

Usually with sake-don you end up with just rice left by the end, but here it was the opposite — salmon was left over, which I loved, haha. That said, the seasoning might land differently depending on personal taste!

Cross-section of the sake-don showing rice and sauce

The sake-don has sauce underneath the rice, and the rice itself is seasoned to some degree, so to my palate it got a bit salty toward the end. If you usually prefer lighter seasoning, this is worth keeping in mind.

Assorted sushi 10 pieces: the seared salmon was my top pick

Sushi Naru's assorted sushi 10 pieces is ₩13,000, and they slice the fish fresh the moment the order comes in. Among the variety, my top pick was the lightly seared salmon sushi.

And of course, since I came to a sushi restaurant, I had to try the sushi too!

Full plate of Sushi Naru's assorted sushi

Sushi Naru slices the fish the moment the order comes in, and eating it in person, the fish tasted fresh and the cuts weren't thin — they were on the thicker side.

Instead of sushi that's mostly rice with a token slice on top, this was the style where you actually feel the texture of the fish with every bite!

It was fun picking one of each kind to try, and my top pick was the seared salmon sushi, haha. The salmon itself was already thick, and being lightly seared added a nutty flavor that was totally my style ♥ If you love salmon, I'd definitely recommend this one.

Is Sushi Naru near Yeongdae Hospital worth it? Final verdict

Thick-cut fish, no holding back! A Daemyeong-dong sushi restaurant where it's fun to pick your way from raw fish bowl to sushi.

I visited Sushi Naru Yeongdae Hospital Main Branch craving sushi in Daegu. The thick fish sliced fresh to order was great, but personally, the ₩12,000 raw fish bowl piled generously with fish stood out most in terms of value. The sake-don also came with a generous amount of thick salmon, and among the sushi, the seared salmon sushi was my top pick! If you're near Yeongdae Hospital looking for a light meal like sushi or a raw fish bowl, this menu and pricing is worth checking out :)
