Daegu breakfast restaurant for king rib yukgaejang: Yukbanjang
In short
Yukbanjang Gwangjanggakoa Gwangko Branch is a yukgaejang (spicy beef soup) restaurant near Gamsam Station in Dalseo, Daegu. After a greasy makchang dinner the night before, the writer arrived right at the 10:30 am opening for one of the 20 king rib yukgaejang bowls sold each day, along with tendon yukgaejang and meat-and-potato dumplings. The rib meat was braised until it fell off the bone in strands and both bowls were emptied to the last drop, making Yukbanjang a solid pick for a hangover breakfast in Daegu.

Hi everyone! It's Juni, your red Korean food lover 🐾
I went to Daegu for a friend's wedding and ended up demolishing every good restaurant I could find — came back with nothing but extra weight to show for it 🤦♀️ Daegu is famous as a food tourism destination for good reason, with makchang (grilled beef intestines), braised galbi, and flat mandu everywhere.
After eating way too much delicious makchang the night before, I was trying to figure out how to cure my greasy hangover, and decided the answer was to flush it all out with red Korean food. I was thrilled to discover that Yukbanjang — the place I fell in love with over yukgaejang kalguksu in Gangwon-do — also has a Daegu branch, so I didn't hesitate to head there for breakfast.
Where to park at Yukbanjang near Gamsam Station
For parking at Yukbanjang Daegu, your best bet is the free public lot in the empty lot across from Duryu Centreville Der Park apartments. It's free, and just a 5-minute walk from the restaurant.
Downtown Daegu is pretty chaotic for a metropolitan city, so as a Daegu newbie I was already stressing about parking before I even got there. But this Daegu breakfast spot had parking well sorted out, so getting there was no hassle at all.

We got there around 11am and there was plenty of parking, and there were still quite a few spots open when we left around 12:30 ❗️
Inside Yukbanjang right at the 10:30 am opening
The exterior of Yukbanjang is done in a sleek black, which made it easy to spot.

Yukbanjang sells some menu items in limited daily quantities, so we made sure to arrive right at the 10:30am opening. The interior was clean and well kept, which made a great first impression :)

The slogan for Yukbanjang, a top yukgaejang restaurant in Daegu, is pretty on point.

These are the wall signs that show just how serious the owner is about yukgaejang :) Every single yukgaejang dish at Yukbanjang is loaded with green onion. Reading about yukgaejang, the benefits of green onion, and how carefully the owner puts each bowl together, the time really flies by.
Ordering king rib yukgaejang, tendon yukgaejang and meat-and-potato dumplings

Yukbanjang has a base yukgaejang with several variations depending on the topping.
- King rib yukgaejang, only 20 bowls sold per day
- Red/tendon/sanghwang mushroom yukgaejang (spicy)
- White/sundubu yukgaejang (mild, white)
- Kalguksu yukgaejang (yukkal) with hearty noodles
Since we're a couple who can't live without meat, we ordered the king rib yukgaejang and the tendon yukgaejang. And since we were absolutely starving, we added the potato dumplings too 🥟

Once you order, they bring out the basic side dishes: garlic (this one's a killer), kkakdugi (radish kimchi), and baek-kimchi (white kimchi). And the tableware comes neatly portioned out individually, which I love — feels so much more hygienic!

If you want more side dishes, you can grab them from the self-serve bar, which also has minced cheongyang chili — if you like it spicy, just add it in!
What does the king rib yukgaejang, limited to 20 bowls a day, taste like?
Yukbanjang's king rib yukgaejang comes with two whole ribs, and the meat covering the bones is so thick just looking at it filled me up. It's simmered so tender the meat pulls right off without any effort at all.

After the white kimchi got our appetites going, the long-awaited yukgaejang finally appeared! The king rib yukgaejang really was gorgeous to look at 🤍
The meat pulled apart along the grain, tender like 1++ Korean beef, and dipping it in the spicy broth was like watching the meat dance in my mouth... pure happiness.
If you're like me — someone who thinks the mild version of yeoptteok (spicy rice cakes) is just a baseline, loves the original flavor, and lives for spicy food — grab the minced cheongyang chili from the self-serve bar and pour it generously over your yukgaejang. Breakfast, sorted 🤍

Yukbanjang is generous with free refills on green onion and rice, but the base portion is already so huge that we were too full to ask for any extra. As for the king ribs — as you can see in the photo on the right, not a single gram of meat was left, and the bones came off so easily it felt like a full protein boost.

Tendon yukgaejang with glass noodles: my partner's pick
My partner ordered the tendon yukgaejang and I loved it so much I have to recommend it too. Just like the king rib yukgaejang, it's loaded with green onion and brisket, plus meat with a texture like doganitang (ox knee cartilage soup) — the texture was fantastic.

Personally, I'm a glass noodle person over instant ramyeon when it comes to yukgaejang (anyone else with me on this...?). Slurping up glass noodles fully soaked in that spicy, seasoned broth — this is what a proper Korean restaurant tastes like.

It's only ₩2,000 more than the base yukgaejang, and yet there's this much meat in it...? I stole a few bites myself, and it just kept coming out like a bottomless gold mine.
Meat-and-potato dumplings: 8 pieces with chewy potato wrappers

We prefer the chewy texture of potato dumplings over the sweeter taste of rib dumplings, so we ordered the meat-potato flavor — and 8 cute little round dumplings arrived, which made me so happy.

I normally don't love the smell of meat dumplings and am firmly team kimchi mandu, but this Daegu favorite makes great dumplings too, haha. Biting into that chewy potato skin packed full of meat filling melted away all my weekday work stress.

After all that talk about huge portions and being full, we ended up finishing our bowls completely, down to the last drop 🫠🐷 This place fully earns its reputation as a top guk-bap (soup and rice) spot in Daegu.

On the way out, there are lemon candies and mouthwash set up by the counter for a fresh finish — a small touch that shows how much care the owner puts into Yukbanjang ❗️❣️
Meat melted into a spicy broth, fragrant with green onion — a fantastic breakfast recommendation
