Signature squid feast spread at Haetan Hwaseong Byeongjeom

Today I wanted to try a bit of everything — spicy stir-fried squid, crispy fried squid, all of it — so I headed to Haetan Hwaseong Byeongjeom. I usually prefer sampling several dishes over sticking to just one, so this time I ordered stone-plate squid, pork belly bossam (boiled pork slices), fried squid, and fried squid mandu, and had a properly loaded table for lunch. Haha.

The stone-plate squid especially had that smoky charred flavor with a deliciously spicy kick, and the fried squid I'd been looking forward to was just as good as expected. The fried squid mandu turned out way better than I thought, too. Let me walk through each one. 😊

Yellow second-floor exterior of Haetan Hwaseong Byeongjeom

The restaurant sits on the 2nd floor. The yellow exterior stands out even from a distance, so it wasn't hard to find at all.

Haetan is already famous over near Yunggeolleung Royal Tombs, a place I'd kept meaning to visit but never made it to. Now that they've opened a new branch in Jinan-dong, you can taste Haetan's squid without the trip out to Yunggeolleung!! I'd been curious about this place for a while, so I took the chance to go. 😊 They also have a lunch special menu, great for a filling meal.

Inside Haetan: kiosk ordering and the self-serve bar

Haetan Hwaseong Byeongjeom has a kiosk at every table, so you sit wherever you like and order yourself. Side dishes, rice, and bean sprout soup are all self-serve — just help yourself to as much as you need.

Interior with generously spaced tables

Walking inside, the space felt clean and really spacious — a comfortable vibe overall. The tables were spaced generously, which made it look great for a family meal or a group gathering. With such a varied menu, it seemed like a good spot to order a bunch of things and share. Once you settle into a seat, you order easily through the kiosk at your table.

They're also running a Naver receipt review event — write a review and you can choose either 5 pieces of fried squid mandu or a drink. 😊 If you're interested, it's worth writing one and grabbing that.

Self-serve bar with side dishes, rice, and bean sprout soup

The self-serve bar was neatly kept, too. Besides what you order, the side dishes (kimchi, dried radish strips, seasoned bean sprouts, corn salad, stir-fried mushrooms, pickled onion, ssamjang, garlic, lettuce, perilla leaves), rice, and bean sprout soup are all self-serve — just take what you need.

What we ordered at Haetan and what it cost — 50,000 won total

At Haetan Hwaseong Byeongjeom we ordered two spicy stone-plate squid lunch sets at ₩12,000 each, one-person pork belly bossam lunch at ₩12,000, a half plate of fried squid at ₩9,000, and fried squid mandu at ₩5,000 — ₩50,000 in total.

  • 🥩 1-person pork belly bossam lunch ₩12,000

Ordering everything I wanted to try ended up building a genuinely loaded squid feast. Haha.

Haetan's signature stone-plate squid: how spicy is it?

Haetan's signature dish, stone-plate squid, arrives as stir-fried squid served on a hot stone plate. We ordered it spicy, and it wasn't just heat — there was a smoky charred sauce flavor layered in that kept pulling me back for more.

Haetan's stone-plate squid served on a hot stone

First up, Haetan's signature stone-plate squid. It comes out as stir-fried squid on a stone plate, and the moment it hit the table, that smoky charred smell hit us right away.

We ordered it spicy. Wow — this is genuinely deliciously spicy. Not just heat, but a smoky sauce flavor layered on top that kept me wanting more with every bite.

Spicy stir-fry with squid and rice cake pieces

The squid and rice cake were both cut into easy-to-eat pieces, and eating them with the sauce was really good.

Squid stir-fry mixed into a bowl of rice

You can't just leave a squid stir-fry this good alone. Haha. I piled squid and sauce generously on top of rice and mixed it all together — the spicy sauce went perfectly with the rice. If you're looking for a spicy dish among Byeongjeom restaurants, this kind of menu can't be skipped. 😊

One-person pork belly suyuk, available only at lunch

Haetan Hwaseong Byeongjeom's 1-person pork belly bossam is ₩12,000 at lunch and can be ordered even alone. The meat was tender and soft, making a nice bite in between mouthfuls of the spicy stone-plate squid.

A plate of 1-person pork belly bossam lunch

And here's the 1-person pork belly bossam we also ordered. Since it's available as a solo lunch item, it seems like a great option even when dining alone.

Lettuce wrap with bossam and sides

The meat was tender and soft. It's tasty on its own, but wrapping a slice of bossam in lettuce with the sides was pure bliss. Alternating between the spicy stone-plate squid and the mild bossam let us enjoy two very different flavors, which was nice. It seemed like a good spot for a Byeongjeom group dinner too, since you can order a variety of dishes to share.

Half plate of fried squid, crisp to the last piece

Haetan Hwaseong Byeongjeom's half plate of fried squid is ₩9,000, and it comes out with whole squid legs fried up. The crispiness held up remarkably well even after a while — this was the dish I remembered most from the whole spread.

And the half plate of fried squid, which we really enjoyed! Wow, this thing is truly the best. 😆

Whole squid leg fried up crispy

The whole squid legs came out fried whole, giving a satisfying bite, and the batter was so crispy that the texture was fantastic. Wow... this was genuinely so good. 😋 I'd been looking forward to the fried squid, and it exceeded expectations — personally, I really enjoyed this one.

Remaining fried squid on the plate

What I especially liked was that the crispiness held up well even after some time had passed. Fried food usually goes soggy after a while, but this one stayed crispy all the way to the last bite — really delicious. If you love fried squid, this is worth ordering as a side.

Fried squid mandu for 5,000 won at Haetan

The fried squid mandu is only ₩5,000, so I added it without hesitation, and it's packed with squid inside the mandu (dumpling) filling. The batter was crispy and the filling had a slight kick, giving it a charm different from a regular fried mandu.

₩5,000 plate of fried squid mandu

Last up, we also ordered the fried squid mandu. At only ₩5,000 it was an easy add-on, and it turned out to be way tastier than expected.

Cross-section of fried squid mandu showing the filling

Wow — this one was genuinely crispy too! The batter was crunchy and the filling inside had a slight spicy kick, with squid packed throughout so you got little pops of squid with every bite — a fun texture. It has a charm quite different from a regular fried mandu. At ₩5,000, it wasn't a heavy add, making it a nice extra side dish.

Is the Haetan Byeongjeom squid lunch worth it?

Trying four dishes together for ₩50,000 at Haetan Hwaseong Byeongjeom, each one had its own charm, which made picking and choosing fun. Worth a look if you're in Jinan-dong searching for a spicy squid dish or a spot for a gathering.

Full table spread of four squid feast dishes

I ordered everything I wanted to try, and it really did become a proper squid feast. Haha. The smoky, deliciously spicy stone-plate squid, the tender pork belly bossam, and the fried squid and squid mandu that were crispier than expected — with all four dishes together, each had its own charm, making it fun to pick and choose.

For me, the crispiness of the fried squid stood out the most — it stayed crispy right to the end, which was really satisfying. If you're looking for a good meal in Jinan-dong, this is worth keeping in mind as a local favorite. Since you can order the spicy stone-plate squid along with several other dishes to share, it also seems like a good choice for a family meal or a group gathering. If you're like me and want to sample a variety of things, order several menu items and enjoy your own squid feast. 😊
