Doesn't the cool breeze just make you crave Chinese food?!☺️ I always love it, but somehow when fall comes and the wind picks up, I want it even more! So this time I found "Gyeryonggak," a Dongdaegu Shinsegae area favorite that also does takeout, and has group tables and rooms, so it's great for gatherings too.

Where is Gyeryonggak and how do you get there?

Gyeryonggak, this Dongdaegu Shinsegae area favorite, is actually a bit of a walk from Dongdaegu Station and Shinsegae Department Store! It's about 10 minutes on foot, and there's parking, so it's convenient to drive there. Wheelchair access is available, there's a kids' menu, but unfortunately pets aren't allowed. It's open year-round except on the day of major holidays, so it seems like a good spot for a family meal during holidays too!

Inside Gyeryonggak: solo bar seats, group tables and private rooms

Inside, Gyeryonggak has a 1st floor and 2nd floor, with solo bar seats, 4-person tables, and group tables! So it seems great for eating alone too, and there's a self-serve bar where you can help yourself to side dishes comfortably. After the meal, there's cool plum tea and hot instant coffee ready to go, making the whole experience perfectly complete.

What's on the Gyeryonggak menu and how much does it cost?

And now the most important part, the menu! There's the basics like jjajangmyeon (black bean noodles), jjamppong (spicy seafood noodle soup), rice dishes, cooked dishes, and side dishes, all quite varied, and prices are mostly in the ₩7,000–8,000 range, a bit on the higher side! If you assume two people are coming, around ₩30,000 should be plenty.

How takeout works at Gyeryonggak in Dong-gu, Daegu

Generally, places with big, spacious dining halls often don't do delivery well, but I understand this place does take takeout orders! It's better to call ahead, but even if you can't, they cook immediately after your order and you can pick it up in under 10–15 minutes, so as long as you avoid the busy hours, you can get it fast!

Lard ganjajang: the spicy black bean noodles at Gyeryonggak

What I ordered was lard ganjajang, Chinese-style fried rice, old-style ketchup sweet and sour pork, and fried dumplings — the ganjajang was slightly spicy and packed with vegetables!

They didn't skimp on ingredients at all, and even though the noodles had softened a bit hahaha, the sauce wasn't too strong and had amazing depth of flavor! I think it was even better than regular jjajang, and they gave such a generous portion that you could finish the noodles and still mix in rice with the leftover sauce.

Crispy old-style ketchup sweet and sour pork and fried dumplings

At this Dongdaegu Shinsegae area favorite, I ordered old-style ketchup sweet and sour pork (₩11,900) and fried dumplings (10 pieces) (₩5,900) — sweet and sour pork usually costs at least ₩20,000 elsewhere, right? But here it wasn't just a taster portion, it was such great value to enjoy nostalgic old-style sweet and sour pork!!

On top of that, the dumplings were also generously portioned, and while the sweet and sour pork wasn't made with glutinous rice batter, the batter was moderate and had a decent softness, and the dumplings were crispy with fillings packed full! The sauce also wasn't overpoweringly ketchup-flavored, just about right to pair with the jjajangmyeon.

Is Gyeryonggak worth it near Dongdaegu Shinsegae?

This was really a satisfying, generous Gyeryonggak experience even eating alone! I left the fried rice for my husband haha, and even though it's a bit of a distance from my place, the owner was kind and the food was satisfying! If you haven't had lunch yet, how about this place?! A hot bowl of jjamppong broth would be perfect for warming up!☺️👍👍
