Hapjeong izakaya for dango and mango bingsu: Soottori Hongdae
In short
Soottori Hongdae Hapjeong is a yakitori izakaya on Dokmak-ro 9-gil in Mapo, Seoul, halfway between Hapjeong and Sangsu stations. The meal ran dango (skewered rice dumplings) and cheese fritters first, then charcoal-scented yakitori with single skewers at ₩2,500–3,000, and finished with mango bingsu (shaved ice); asking staff to press in more charcoal kept the skewers warm to the last bite. Covering yakitori, ₩3,900 light dishes and dessert in one place is the biggest strength of Soottori Hongdae Hapjeong.

Today I visited a spot between Hongdae and Hapjeong where you can enjoy Japanese-style yakitori along with all kinds of side dishes! 😊
Where is Soottori Hongdae Hapjeong, and how far is it from Hapjeong and Sangsu stations?
Soottori Hongdae Hapjeong is a yakitori izakaya on Dokmak-ro 9-gil in Mapo-gu, Seoul. It sits roughly halfway between Hapjeong and Sangsu stations, so it's pretty easy to find — about an 8-minute walk from Hapjeong Station Exit 3, or about 6 minutes from Sangsu Station Exit 1!
What the building and interior of Soottori Hongdae Hapjeong look like

The exterior is done up mostly in yellow, so it really catches the eye 💡⭐️✨ It has that cute, particular feel of a Japanese izakaya, so even from the entrance it felt like I was already there for a drink 🍻✨

The interior also keeps that Japanese pub feel, which suited the yakitori really well.

The lighting isn't too bright either, so it has a cozy vibe that's great for chatting comfortably with friends over a meal, or for a date,

and there are seats with an outdoor window feel too, so on a nice day you can really soak up the atmosphere 😊 With the weather this cool lately, these seats are just perfect!!

Overall it leaned less toward a formal atmosphere and more toward a casual izakaya feel — a place to just come and enjoy drinks and snacks.

Single yakitori skewers run mostly ₩2,500-3,000 depending on the cut, and you can pick from a range of parts like heart, neck, tenderloin, thigh, wing, and negima. Set menus range from the high ₩10,000s to ₩30,000s, sized nicely for 1-2 or 3-4 people.
Light dishes like dango, karaage, fritters, okonomiyaki, pudding, sherbet, and mochi tofu are all ₩3,900! Amazing value. There were also several kinds of drinks — draft beer, highballs, sawa — great for a light drink alongside the yakitori 🍺

Honest taste review: dango, cheese fritters and yakitori

First up, dango (skewered rice dumplings) — a proper Japanese dessert I wanted to try alongside the yakitori 🍡💕 Chewy texture with sweetness added, and it went well with a drink too.

Next, cheese fritters!

Warm cheese and a crispy coating outside made it perfect for alternating bites — one skewer, one bite of cheese.
The coasters that came with the drinks were so cute too hahaha, kind of like a hamster 🐹

And then, the yakitori I was most looking forward to!!!! I loved the subtle scent from the charcoal skewers 🔥 The outside was grilled just enough for a nutty flavor, and the inside was super chewy depending on the cut 🫧✨👍 Even with the same chicken, the texture really differs by part — if you like soft meat, thigh or tenderloin suits you, and if you like more of a chew, go for neck or heart.

The skewers weren't overly seasoned, so you could really taste the charcoal aroma and the meat itself, and switching up sauces and sides kept me reaching for more — gone in a flash 😋 The kiosk even recommended sauces, which was a nice touch 🫧🤍
The yakitori was great on its own, but it especially shone paired with drinks or other small dishes, sharing bites here and there!!

Ask for extra charcoal to keep the skewers warm
If you request it, they'll add charcoal so you can keep eating warm skewers the whole time! 🤍🤍

Finishing with mango bingsu
Mango bingsu (shaved ice) was great as a palate cleanser after the meal. The cool, sweet mango flavor felt like it reset my mouth after the charcoal-grilled dishes 🥭❄️ After eating meat with that smoky aroma, the cold, sweet dessert tasted even better ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Would I go back to Soottori Hongdae Hapjeong? 5000000❤️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The biggest strength of Soottori Hongdae Hapjeong is being able to enjoy yakitori, light dishes, and dessert all in one place 🍢✨ The mood is relaxed rather than heavy, so it's great for drinks with friends and also fine for a casual dinner. If you like Japanese izakaya vibes or you're looking for yakitori around Hapjeong or Sangsu, it's worth a visit!! haha 😊
Next time, I'd like to try other cuts of yakitori I didn't get to this time, and also try the charcoal omakase or other side dishes. I especially recommend the course of yakitori → a drink → finishing with mango bingsu or dango 🍢🍺🥭🍡 (we actually ate the dango first though haha)
If you're looking for a Japanese-style izakaya around Hapjeong or Sangsu, or want to try a variety of yakitori, I highly recommend this place again haha ❤️
