Multigrain rice gukbap set in Seongsu, Seoul: Dwaeji Gomtang House

In short

Dwaeji Gomtang House Musinsa Mega Store Branch is a pop-up gukbap (rice-and-soup) restaurant in the 4th-floor food hall of Musinsa Mega Store at 62 Seongsu-ro, Seongdong, Seoul. The writer ordered one clear gomtang set and one spicy gomtang set, both served with multigrain rice already stirred into the soup and side dishes of dried radish, kimchi, cubed radish kimchi, salted shrimp and house-made chili dadaegi. The clear gomtang tasted clean and mild while the spicy gomtang arrived topped with mushrooms in a genuinely hot broth, so the two bowls are worth splitting between two people.

The menu: clear gomtang and spicy gomtang

They had a variety of items on offer, but the main two were clear gomtang and spicy gomtang, so it was easy to pick depending on your mood that day. Seaweed soup is a seasonal item!

They also sell side dishes like cold boiled pork, so I'd recommend visiting and picking whatever suits your taste~

The menu looks simple, which made me feel like this is a place that focuses hard on doing a few dishes well. Especially since everything on the menu pairs well together when mixed, it felt like the lineup was carefully picked for tasty combinations!

How ordering and pickup work at the food hall

At Dwaeji Gomtang House, you get a buzzer after ordering, and when it rings you go pick up your food yourself and grab your own utensils. The dishware area was kept clean, which was reassuring. On one side there's also salt and pepper for you to season to taste~

Two bowls: the clear gomtang set and the spicy gomtang set

I ordered one clear gomtang set and one spicy gomtang set! If you want to try both, you just have to order both. Anyone looking for a great gukbap spot in Seongsu should definitely check this place out. Just looking at it, you can tell the portions are generous!

The soup here comes with the rice already mixed in! Pork is piled high on top of the rice, surrounded by a delicious broth. The side dishes went really well with it too.

What side dishes come with the gomtang set

All the side dishes that came along were really tasty — dried radish, kimchi and cubed radish kimchi (essentials for any gukbap), salted shrimp to add extra seasoning, and house-made chili paste to eat with the meat! There was also a slice of orange for dessert.

Clear gomtang: a clean broth with multigrain rice

With the clear gomtang, one sip of the broth genuinely surprised me. With the weather getting chillier these days, this feels like exactly the kind of Seongsu gukbap spot you'd want to seek out. When you think of gukbap, you usually picture the homey look of a stone bowl, but this place was so clean and delicious that it also felt like a great spot for a date.

Having multigrain rice mixed into this light broth made the meal feel healthier and more filling. The rice portion was also generous, so I'd definitely recommend it if you want a hearty meal.

The meat was really delicious too. The thinly sliced pieces were incredibly tender and paired perfectly with both the soup and the rice. I almost wanted to learn the secret to making meat this soft!

How spicy is the spicy gomtang?

The spicy gomtang was perfect timing since I happened to be craving something spicy! It had a completely different charm from the clear gomtang, so I'd definitely recommend it to anyone in the mood for a spicy gukbap.

Toppings on the spicy gomtang

The spicy gomtang came topped with mushrooms, which added a nice chewy texture on top of that healthy, wholesome feeling.

The spicy gomtang was quite spicy for my taste — if you're not great with spice, it might be worth asking them to make it a little milder! For me, it was spicy and refreshing in just the right way, right up my alley.

Pork coated in the spicy broth

The tender meat coated in that spicy broth was also really appealing — it made me think this place really knows how to handle meat.

Eating the spicy gomtang together with the side dishes

It paired really well with the side dishes too. As a fan of Korean food, this menu and the overall spread easily got a passing grade from me!
