We stopped by Bored & Hungry Mapo, a smash burger restaurant, on a weekend evening while out walking the Gyeongui Line Forest Park. You can now taste the flavor and vibe of the original Seongsu-dong Bored & Hungry here in Mapo too.

Where is Bored & Hungry Mapo and how do you get there?

Bored & Hungry Mapo is about a 5-minute walk from Daeheung Station, easy to find if you head toward Gyeongui Line Park. Their monkey character is painted across the whole building, so it caught our eye from a distance. We parked at the Sinsu roadside private lot and walked over — a good spot to stop before or after a stroll along the Gyeongui Line Forest.

What you can help yourself to at the self-serve bar

Bored & Hungry Mapo is mostly set up with tables for two, a cozy but hip American-vibe space. The checkerboard floor, neon signs, graffiti here and there, and yellow chairs all stood out. There are also four-person tables made by joining two-tops, and we saw families with kids too.

Next to the self-serve bar are the kitchen, bussing station, and pickup zone. The compact space was used efficiently, with a cute yet hip American retro atmosphere that left an impression.

On one side, there's a goods and self-serve corner with T-shirts, canvas bags, and more.

If you order a soda, you pick it up yourself at the self-serve bar, and ketchup is also self-serve. Next to the sodas were water and cups. They had everything ready — knives, forks, plates, wet wipes, nitrile gloves, tissues, even Tabasco sauce — so it was easy to grab what we needed. There were also stickers on one side, so we picked out a few we liked.

You order by tapping your phone on the NFC tag on the table or scanning the QR code. Wi-Fi and the restroom password were clearly posted too. For cash (bank transfer), pay apps, split payments, or direct payment, you ask a staff member and pay at the counter — Alipay, Kakao Pay, Onnuri Gift Certificates, and Zero Pay all seemed to be accepted.

How an ordering mistake turned into two plates of corn ribs

We ordered combos with a burger, snack, and drink. My husband and I each scanned our own phones and added our preferred combo to the order. I'd meant to order the Classic Cheeseburger + corn ribs + soda, and my husband the Mega Bun single burger + fries + vanilla shake combo. But when I first added the O.G. Champion Burger + corn ribs combo and thought it looked too heavy, I tried to cancel just that one — and accidentally deleted my husband's combo instead 😅 We ended up with two plates of corn ribs, and my husband never got to try the fries or vanilla shake, eating the O.G. Champion Burger combo instead 😂

O.G. Champion Burger + corn ribs + soda combo / Classic Cheeseburger + corn ribs + soda combo

They brought the soda cups first, so we filled ours with Sprite and Tom's Zero Pineapple. My husband used the Tabasco sauce to his taste.

They brought our order to the table. Seeing two plates of corn ribs from the mistake was a little startling at first 😆 I missed having fries, and my husband probably missed the vanilla shake he'd wanted for a sweet-and-salty combo. Still, the corn ribs were delicious enough that we finished both plates.

How does the Classic Cheeseburger taste?

This is the Classic Cheeseburger I chose. The crispy-edged patty peeking out past the bun caught my eye right away. Between the soft, savory brioche bun sit a 130g smash patty, American cheese, classic cheese sauce, and grilled onion.

The smash patty's juicy, rich meatiness blended with the savory cheese and grilled onion for a true, back-to-basics American burger. I found myself wanting a little crunchy vegetable in there. If you'd miss that crisp veggie texture too, the Bacon Deluxe Burger or Chipotle Spicy Burger might be a better pick.

Just how salty is the O.G. Champion Burger?

This is the O.G. Champion Burger. It's apparently the recipe that won the Best Burger award on Good Morning America in 2022. Between the brioche bun are two 80g smash patties, two slices of American cheese, O.G. sauce, O.G. grilled onion, and your choice of dill pickle or jalapeño — we went with dill pickle. The patty edges peeking out looked just as crispy as expected.

With two 80g patties, it's about 30g more meat than the Classic Cheeseburger's 130g patty, and it looked even thicker to boot. One bite in, we got a juicy, rich meaty flavor with deep cheese notes — and it was quite salty. Personally I found it a bit too salty, but my husband loved it, saying it was exactly the American burger taste he had in mind.

Were two plates of corn ribs too much?

These are the corn ribs, meant to be picked up and eaten like ribs. I'd wanted fries as my other side, but thanks to the ordering mix-up, we each ended up with our own full plate 😂

With two whole plates, I worried it might be too salty, but it turned out less salty than expected and nicely savory. The grilled corn had a great texture, and the seasoning had good depth of flavor, so we kept reaching for more. We also dipped some in the sweet, rich sauce that came alongside for variety.

We used the Sinsu Public Parking Lot, about a 4-minute walk from Bored & Hungry Mapo. It runs 24 hours, and the rate is ₩200 per 5 minutes, or ₩2,400 per hour.

Around 5:30pm on a weekend, spots were still available, so parking was easy, and you pay by credit card on the way out. Holders of Seoul's Dadungi Happy Card, compact car owners, and low-emission vehicle owners get a 50% discount.

Final verdict on Bored & Hungry Mapo

My husband was very happy to get an American-style handmade burger in a spot that felt thoroughly American. With the Gyeongui Line Forest right out front, it was also a great spot for a post-meal stroll. Between the rich, juicy smash burgers and the wide range of other burgers and sides, keep this in mind next time you're craving a burger around Sinchon, Sogang University, or Daeheung Station.
