Gyeongju Hwangnidan-gil dessert shop with weekend waits: Buja Hodu

In short

Buja Hodu is a walnut pastry (hodu-gwaja) dessert shop on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju. Visiting on a weekend afternoon meant a wait and a sold-out matcha flavor, so the writer packed two 15-piece boxes of the mix of original and pea cream cheese flavors, both packed tight with whole walnuts and filling. Parking near the shop is tough, but the Jjoksaem District temporary public parking lot nearby makes it easy.

I visited Buja Hodu, the hottest dessert gift spot on Hwangnidan-gil in Gyeongju right now!

Instead of the usual travel souvenirs like Gyeongju bread or chapssal-bori bread, I was looking for something special that everyone could enjoy regardless of age or taste, and that's how I found this place. It's already known as a dessert hotspot on Hwangnidan-gil — popular enough that there was a wait even on the weekend — and it's packed full of walnuts and filling, so it was genuinely delicious.

The exterior is neatly done up with roof tiles, fitting for its Hwangnidan-gil location. There's no space to eat inside, but there are a few tables outside, so it seemed perfect for enjoying an americano with walnut pastries on a nice day haha.

Parking is easiest at the Jjoksaem District temporary public lot

There's no parking right in front of the shop, and most nearby public lots are full on weekends, so I recommend parking at the Gyeongju Hwangnidan-gil Jjoksaem District temporary public parking lot, which can fit a few hundred cars. It's a bit far, but there's always a spot available.

Menu and ordering

🛎️Order - Two 15-piece boxed mixes (original, pea cream cheese). There were so many people on the day I went that the matcha flavor was already sold out 😭😭. The owner said the original and pea cream cheese flavors were delicious too, so I packed two boxes total — one to gift and one for myself.

True to its reputation as a Hwangnidan-gil dessert hotspot, they kept making more in the back the whole time, and even though I came around lunchtime, there weren't many left 😭. They also have things like walnut pastry ice cream, so there are snacks good for eating while walking around too.

Bojagi gift wrapping and packaging

They also do gift wrapping with a bojagi (traditional wrapping cloth) — such an elegant wrap, full of care, that it seemed perfect for a Chuseok or holiday gift. I should bring some next Chuseok.

After wrapping it, they carefully placed it in a plastic bag for me.

The packaging box was so clean and upscale it was beyond my expectations — I let out a little gasp when I saw it. The tidy yet emotive design would make anyone receiving it happy, so nothing beats it as a special souvenir or gift set after a Gyeongju trip. It's made with 100% domestic rice, which makes it taste even better haha.

Opening the box, each piece was neatly individually wrapped, which was really touching. It's tidy and hygienic, and looks so much prettier and more thoughtful, plus it's very easy and convenient to grab one at a time. White wrapping is for the original flavor, yellow for pea cream cheese, so they're color-coded and easy to tell apart.

I always got tired of only being given Gyeongju bread or chapssal-bori bread whenever I went to Gyeongju, so having walnut pastries with new, distinctive flavors makes for such a great gift.

The walnuts themselves look so pretty — it looks delicious just from the visual.

How does the pea cream cheese flavor taste?

The moment I bit into the pea cream cheese walnut pastry, my mouth filled with the nutty, sweet pea filling — amazing 😭. The sweet pea filling and the soft, savory cream cheese combine without being overly sweet, striking a perfect sweet-and-salty balance you don't get tired of even to the last bite! This pea filling is really the star. A whole walnut is packed in too, so it looks pretty and the contents themselves radiate a sense of quality.

The original red bean flavor

I tried the original walnut pastry right away too. The outside is crispy and the inside moist, with red bean filling packed in without a single gap. One bite was nutty, and being a low-sugar red bean paste, it was moderately sweet and pretty good — not too sweet, so parents would probably like it as a gift too. Also, big chunks of real walnut are generously packed in, giving it real crunch, which makes it feel even more upscale and tasty. Eating it with coffee, I just kept reaching for more haha.

They said delivery is available too, so if you're looking for a Hwangnidan-gil souvenir or street snack in Gyeongju, I highly recommend trying it.

Overall verdict

Thanks to the generous filling and abundance of walnuts, the depth of flavor was more satisfying than expected.

The upscale packaging makes it worthy as a holiday or travel gift, but it's also perfect as a no-pressure street snack to enjoy while walking around Hwangnidan-gil.

With both visuals and taste covered, it's a Hwangnidan-gil dessert hotspot in Gyeongju — if you come to Hwangnidan-gil, I definitely recommend trying it.
