Paju garden café with salt bread and peppermint tea: On the Rail

In short

On the Rail is a large bakery café beside a railway line on Imjingak-ro in Munsan-eup, Paju, Gyeonggi. After a day out at Imjingak, I stopped in for one salt bread (sogeumppang) and two cups of warm peppermint tea and ate at an outdoor garden table, where a self-serve microwave and plates are set out for warming bread. With roomy dedicated parking, On the Rail is an easy outdoor café to add to a Paju drive.

View of On the Rail café in Munsan, Paju

I went looking for a nice café to rest at after a trip to Imjingak in Paju, and ended up at On the Rail! The name itself was unusual, and it turns out there's actually a railway line running right next to the café 🚂 It's close to Imjingak too, so it was a great outdoor café in Paju to pair with a drive.

Is parking easy at On the Rail?

🚗 Dedicated parking is available. As a large suburban café, On the Rail has a spacious parking lot, so it was easy to visit by car. Especially around Imjingak and Paju, walking around isn't really practical, so most people drive — and it was nice not having to worry about parking.

You immediately understand why the café is called ON THE RAIL once you look around! There really is a railway line running alongside the café, and apparently you can even see trains pass by.

On the Rail photo zone made with rails and benches

Near the café there's also a photo zone made with rails and benches, giving On the Rail a vibe that's hard to find at other large cafés 🚂

There were also vintage cars and props scattered around, which made it fun to just wander and look!

What bread does On the Rail bake?

Walking inside, there's a large space with the bakery items lined up in rows.

There were way more varieties than I expected — basics like salt bread and croissants, plus heartier options like sausage bread and garlic bread. The sweet desserts were varied too, from butter bars, tarts and cakes to fruit-topped desserts, so anyone who loves bread would have a lot of fun choosing 🥐🍰

The outdoor garden: my favourite part of On the Rail

Outdoor garden with tables among trees and grass

Personally, my favorite part was the outdoor space! The garden itself is quite spacious, with tables placed generously among the trees and grass, so it never felt cramped. There were a lot of families visiting, and since both the indoor and outdoor areas are so roomy, it seemed like a good spot to visit with parents or with kids too. If you're looking for an outdoor café in Paju to spend relaxed time outside on a nice day, this space is definitely On the Rail's biggest strength 🌿

Salt bread and warm peppermint tea, warmed up yourself

Salt bread and warm peppermint tea on an outdoor table

We ordered one salt bread and two cups of warm peppermint tea. The salt bread was golden and crisp outside, soft inside — great with warm tea 🥐 And sitting outdoors looking out at the garden, rather than indoors, made everything feel a lot more relaxed!

Self-serve corner with microwave and plates for warming bread

There's a microwave and plates set up so you can warm your bread yourself. Heating times were posted by type — salt bread, tarts, etc. — so it was nice being able to warm it up exactly to your taste 👍🏻

Is On the Rail in Paju worth a visit?

📋 On the Rail was a great stop to pair with a trip to Imjingak or a Paju drive! It's a good spot to visit with family, and just as nice with a partner or friends.

  • ✔️ Plenty of parking
  • ✔️ Unique atmosphere with an actual railway line running by
  • ✔️ Spacious indoor space and outdoor garden
  • ✔️ Wide variety of bakery items
  • ✔️ Photo zones scattered throughout

Unlike your typical large café, having the railway as a clear standout feature made it memorable 🚂 I'd recommend it if you're stopping for coffee after playing around Imjingak, or looking for an outdoor café in Paju to enjoy bread and coffee outside on a nice day :)
