Gyeongju takeout dessert café with next-day crisp egg tart: Tareudang

In short

Tareudang is a takeout dessert café in the middle of the Hwangnidang-gil main road in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk, open daily 11:00–19:00. A late-afternoon visit meant the popular fruit mochi had sold out, so the order was the new fresh chocolate mochi and a plain egg tart, and the egg tart was still crisp a full day later. If fruit mochi is the goal, Tareudang is a shop to reach right at opening.

Tareudang on Hwangnidang-gil: the first stop on a Gyeongju dessert run

The best part of planning a Gyeongju trip has to be the dessert tour, doesn't it? One place I really wanted to visit was Tareudang, the café on Hwangnidang-gil that's been getting a lot of buzz lately. It sits right on the main street you're bound to walk down anyway, so it fit perfectly into my route.

Fruit mochi and fruit sando desserts at Tareudang

Fruit sando (fruit sandwiches) and limited-batch mochi rice cakes are all the rage these days, right? This gives off exactly that same limited-batch fruit mochi vibe — if you've been curious, you should definitely try it!

What sells out if you reach Tareudang late in the afternoon?

Since this is such a popular Hwangnidang-gil dessert spot, I figured it'd be crowded during the day, so I gave myself some extra leeway with timing. Was I too relaxed about it, though? By the time I showed up in the late afternoon, the popular items were already completely sold out, ugh. If you're planning a visit, don't go late like I did — I'd strongly recommend getting there a bit earlier.

Fruit sando and fruit mochi flavors in the Tareudang showcase

Bright, eye-catching fruit sando and mochi. Stepping inside, I could tell it's a dedicated takeout spot — fast turnover and spotless. What I'd come for were the new chocolate mochi and the plain egg tart, but once I saw the showcase, the vivid fresh fruit sando and fruit mochi everyone raves about in Gyeongju completely grabbed my attention.

Whole fresh mango mochi, fresh musk melon mochi, thick Greek shine muscat mochi, fresh pineapple cream mochi — with whole fruit tucked inside, they all looked so pretty. Next time I'll come early and sweep up one of every flavor of this Gyeongju-famous fruit sando-style mochi.

How does Tareudang's new fresh chocolate mochi taste?

New chocolate mochi vs. an egg tart still crisp the next day. Sadly, all that was left this time were the new chocolate mochi and the plain egg tart, so those came home with me.

The deep flavor of the chocolate mochi. I took one bite and, wow... it was genuinely impressive. Not the artificial, flat sweetness of cheap processed sweets, but a rich, high-quality fresh chocolate filling that spreads deep cocoa flavor all through your mouth.

Paired with the chewy sweet rice cake wrapper, it's a work of art — I'd strongly recommend this Hwangnidang-gil dessert even to people who aren't big chocolate fans.

Tareudang's chocolate mochi, about the size of a plum

It's roughly the size of a plum. The price isn't exactly cheap, but honestly, that's just how desserts are these days, right, ugh. Still — when it tastes this good, what can you do!

Is the Tareudang egg tart still crisp the next day?

An egg tart that's still surprising the next day. I packed it up and ate it a full day later. Pastry desserts usually go soft over time, but this one kept its crisp texture intact even after a day, while the filling inside was still moist and soft — I was genuinely impressed.

The moment I took a bite, it hit me: 'Ah, this is a Hwangnidang-gil café that's genuinely serious about every single dessert.' With the basics done this perfectly, I couldn't help but get curious about their cheesecake tarts and Shanghai butter rice cakes too.

Walking on to Cheomseongdae and Daereungwon from Tareudang

Tareudang sits right in the center of Hwangnidang-gil's main road, and it's also close to must-see spots like Cheomseongdae, Daereungwon, and Cheonmachong, making it the perfect stop for takeout before or after a walk. Pick up a pretty tart and some fruit mochi and bring them along when you head to see the night views at Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond or Woljeonggyo Bridge, and it completes a romantic evening stroll in Gyeongju. If you're looking for a dessert spot in Gyeongju that never disappoints, make sure to visit right at opening time!
