Dalseo Korean restaurant for boneless mackerel rice: Hyangtaek

In short

Hyangtaek Seongseo Keimyung University Branch is a Korean restaurant in Dalseo, Daegu, serving Korean dishes made with domestic ingredients. We had Spanish mackerel gondre rice and yukhoe bibimbap with my child, who happily ate everything from the miso doenjang soup to the gondre rice. Verdict: the Spanish mackerel gondre rice was an especially good mild meal to share with a child.

Korean meal at Hyangtaek Seongseo Keimyung University Branch with a child

When dining out with my child, taste is hugely important, of course, but whether the food is too strongly seasoned to share with a child feels like an even bigger checkpoint. Until now, to meet that condition, I think I had mostly gone to places with single-item menus, like barbecue restaurants or pork cutlet places. This time, though, I chose something new near Seongseo Keimyung University.

Hyangtaek is on a backstreet behind Gangchang Station on Subway Line 2. The surrounding area is a quiet residential neighborhood, so there is no separate parking lot. It looked like one or two cars could park in front of the restaurant.

We ordered Spanish mackerel gondre rice for my child and yukhoe bibimbap for me.

Basic side dishes served with yukhoe bibimbap

First, the basic sides were set out: an egg yolk for the yukhoe bibimbap, unseasoned roasted gim (seaweed), soy sauce, miso doenjang soup, salted seafood, and gochujang (Korean red chili paste).

My child must have loved the miso doenjang soup, because they kept slurping it down. 🤭 Before the main dishes even arrived, they finished two bowls all by themselves.

There was also a weekday-only review event, so try the tasty mushroom jeon (savory Korean pancake) for ₩0~!

How the yukhoe bibimbap and Spanish mackerel gondre rice tasted

After a short wait, our dishes arrived. I added the egg yolk to the yukhoe bibimbap and mixed it up really well. Yoo-hoo~!!! I also mixed soy sauce into the Spanish mackerel gondre rice for my child.

The yukhoe bibimbap looked like it had very fresh raw beef, so I loved it from the first look. 👍 There was a generous amount of yukhoe, and the balance with vegetables such as bean sprouts and lettuce was just right. All those colorful ingredients really got my appetite going!!

The Spanish mackerel gondre rice disappeared in no time when wrapped in gim with a little extra soy sauce! My child had never tried gondre before, so I wondered whether they would eat it... but my worries were completely unnecessary. They ate it so well.

My child said they wanted the one-plate galbi (grilled beef ribs), an add-on dish, so I was about to order it—but when I visited, it was being served as part of an opening event~!

My child was diligently eating bites topped with gondre rice + Spanish mackerel + galbi + soy sauce, haha. Seeing them eat so well made me feel proud for no reason.

Why it was good for a meal with a child

Spanish mackerel gondre rice that was good to share with a child

The Spanish mackerel gondre rice was convenient and great because the fish had no bones, so there was no hassle of picking them out. The yukhoe bibimbap also made for a filling one-bowl meal, with its fresh raw beef and gochujang pairing so well. If the sauce is too heavy or overpowering, it can mask the natural flavors of the yukhoe and vegetables, but that was not the case at all.

If you visit with a child, I recommend the Spanish mackerel gondre rice for their meal; if you want to try rich yukhoe with crisp vegetables, go for the yukhoe bibimbap. ✨️
