Daegu Korean restaurant for galbi and gondre rice: Hyangtaek
In short
Hyangtaek Seongseo Keimyung University Branch is a Korean restaurant in Dalseo, Daegu, serving neatly prepared Korean meals. There was a weekday lunch queue, but tables turned over quickly, and I tried yukhoe bibimbap, Spanish mackerel gondre rice, and hanpan galbi. Verdict: the fresh yukhoe, boneless fish, and gently sweet galbi made a satisfying combination.

Weekday Lunch Queue and Interior

Inside, the restaurant was neatly divided into tables for two and four. I visited at weekday lunchtime, and, as you’d expect from a popular spot, there was already a queue!! But the table turnover was much faster than I expected, so I got in quickly without a long wait. I think it’s a great place even during a busy lunch break.

Neat Side Dishes Matched to the Main Dishes

After ordering, the side dishes arrived in a neat spread! On the left is the seasoning sauce for the Spanish mackerel gondre rice, while on the right are the egg yolk and gochujang (Korean red chili paste) for the yukhoe bibimbap. The thoughtfully prepared sauces matched to each main dish made me even more excited, haha.
Yukhoe Bibimbap, Spanish Mackerel Gondre Rice, and Hanpan Galbi

For today’s meal, I ordered Spanish mackerel gondre rice, yukhoe bibimbap, and hanpan galbi -!

Yukhoe Bibimbap Generously Filled with Raw Beef
I started with the yukhoe bibimbap (rice mixed with seasoned raw beef), and I was surprised by how much yukhoe it had! The meat wasn’t at all fishy, and it tasted wonderfully fresh. Once I broke the yolk and mixed everything together, its rich nuttiness and the chewy texture of the yukhoe came together so deliciously :))

Easy-to-Eat Boneless Spanish Mackerel Gondre Rice
Next was the Spanish mackerel gondre rice. The mackerel came boneless, so it was really easy to eat without picking out any bones! Mix the mackerel with the fragrant gondre rice, then top it with the salted seafood that comes alongside it for incredible savory flavor. It was also sooo good wrapped in crisp gopchang gim (extra-crispy roasted seaweed) with a little chive soy sauce...!

Hanpan Galbi That Was Great on the Side
Lastly, this was the hanpan galbi (a platter of marinated short ribs) I ordered as a side! It was wonderfully moist, with a gently sweet marinade that had soaked right in, haha. It was such a great combination to place a piece right over the gondre rice or yukhoe bibimbap. I definitely recommend adding it as a side!
