Weekend brunch at a Gwacheon Korean restaurant: Haenon Miyeok sets
In short
Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch is a Korean restaurant in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi, run by a nourishing seaweed soup brand that started in Busan in 2015. On a late weekend morning a couple shared the boneless flounder seaweed soup set at 19,000 won and the beef seaweed soup set at 20,000 won, and because the order was for two, the six standard banchan came with seasoned flounder and vinegared chicken breast as well. Haenon Miyeok is worth returning to whenever heavy, spicy restaurant food gets tiring and a clean, carefully set Korean table sounds better.

A review of the boneless flounder and beef seaweed soup sets

On a weekend morning after finally sleeping in, cooking felt like too much effort but I still wanted a meal that would fill me up gently and warmly. My husband and I got dressed at a leisurely pace and headed to Haenon Miyeok in Gwacheon. It's a brand famous for its restorative seaweed soup that started in Busan back in 2015, and I'd heard they'd opened a direct branch in Gwacheon, so off we went.
What is Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon, the nourishing seaweed soup table from Busan?

I'd always wanted to go to Haenon Miyeok during a trip to Busan but never got the chance due to scheduling, so I was thrilled to find it so close to home.

Parking at Haenon Miyeok and the walk from Government Complex Gwacheon Station
Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon Direct Branch has a solid parking lot right in front of the restaurant, making it convenient to drive there. From Government Gwacheon Complex Station on Line 4, it's about a 16-minute walk, and the walking path is well maintained, so it was a pleasant walk even without a car.

Inside Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon: a dining room built for family gatherings

Walking through the door, the first thing that caught my eye was a black-and-white panorama covering the wall. It introduced the Haenon Miyeok brand, with images of haenyeo (female divers) working the sea and details about the ingredients that go into their food.

The interior felt spacious overall thanks to the high ceilings, and there were plenty of tables for larger groups — on the day we visited, it seemed like a lot of families were there too. Given the menu suits kids well, there were also kids' chairs, making it a kid-friendly spot.
Flounder and beef seaweed soup sets: prices and what comes on the tray

After sitting down and mulling over the menu, I ordered the boneless flounder set and my husband ordered the beef seaweed soup set. At Haenon Miyeok, the beef seaweed soup set is ₩20,000 and the boneless flounder seaweed soup set is ₩19,000.

Solo dining is possible here too, but when you order for two or more like we did, you get six standard banchan (side dishes) plus extra seasoned flounder and vinegared chicken breast. Seasoned flounder as a side dish! That's a spread you'd expect at a hanjeongsik (Korean full-course meal) restaurant.

Every one of the six standard banchan was neatly prepared and not overly spicy or strong-flavored, so we enjoyed them all. There's also a self-serve bar in the middle where you can grab more if you run low, which was a nice touch. Exactly the kind of place I'd recommend as a great Korean restaurant in Gwacheon.

How big are the seaweed soup portions, and can you refill the rice?
While we were busy working through the banchan, the seaweed soup arrived. It came in a steaming hot stone bowl, and the portion was substantial. The rice also came in a small ceramic bowl — not a huge amount, but refillable on request. I suspect it's kept small because the soup portion is so generous that many people end up leaving rice unfinished. I ended up passing some of mine to my husband.

Boneless flounder seaweed soup: clean-tasting, with no bones to pick
Fish seaweed soup can be a hassle when you have to pick out bones, but the boneless flounder version only contained deboned meat, so it was easy to eat. The broth had that distinct clean flavor of flounder along with Haenon Miyeok's own deep flavor. The seaweed in particular was excellent — it felt true to the essence of the dish.

Beef seaweed soup at Haenon Miyeok: deep, nutty and filling
The beef seaweed soup my husband chose had a broth that was savory and rich. It had that deep flavor you'd expect from something simmered for a long time, and the phrase 'a bowl of restorative food' naturally came to mind. Officially a seaweed soup spot worth its reputation.

Why book Haenon Miyeok Gwacheon on Naver before you go
With the Naver reservation event, you can get a palm-sized fried shrimp as a freebie, so it's worth booking through Naver before you go if you can.

After eating our fill at Haenon Miyeok, we went for another walk to work it off. Thanks to the rich, warming broth, we were able to start our weekend on a good note. This is the kind of place I'll come back to whenever I'm tired of heavy, spicy restaurant food and craving a neatly set table instead.
