Noon peak-time cutlet set with udon in Dongtan Mokdong: Kkot Gatsu

In short

Kkot Gatsu Dongtan Main Branch is a handmade pork cutlet restaurant on Wangbaesan 3-gil in Dongtan, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi, where the pork is aged for 10 days. A couple arrived at the 12pm lunch peak and ordered the Kkot Gatsu Set with Hwa Udon for 19,500 won and the loin cutlet for 14,000 won, and the tenderloin Kkot Gatsu was so soft it melted in the mouth, breaking the idea that loin always beats tenderloin. The meal was good enough that they plan to return at 11:30am to catch the limited-quantity premium loin cutlet.

I've never had pork cutlet this good... Kkot Gatsu Dongtan Mokdong branch

Today I want to introduce a Dongtan spot I fell genuinely in love with after visiting recently. It was a sponsored visit, but the meal was so shockingly, overwhelmingly delicious that my husband and I both said afterward, "From now on, this is the only place we're eating pork cutlet." After eating there myself, I finally understood why the line never seems to end at 'Kkot Gatsu Dongtan Main Branch,' the Dongtan Mokdong favorite — here's my full review.

A truly hardcore-honest review of finding a real hidden gem starts now!

What is Kkot Gatsu like at the 12pm lunch peak, and how to order on CatchTable

We arrived around the 12pm lunch peak and, sure enough, the place was packed with a sea of people. Once inside, you can make a reservation and place your order in advance right through the CatchTable kiosk.

Interior of Kkot Gatsu Dongtan Mokdong branch, mostly wooden furnishings

The interior is done in tidy, mostly wooden furnishings, giving it a cozy, pretty atmosphere almost like a café.

On one side of the store, I noticed certificates showing top marks from the Korea Consumer Industry Evaluation for the restaurant industry, plus evidence of celebrity visits. (Ji Suk-jin apparently liked it enough to come back twice, haha.)

There's Kkot Gatsu, loin cutlet, cheese cutlet, and chicken cutlet among the fried cutlet options, plus noodle dishes like cold soba, Hwa Udon (spicy beef udon), plain udon, and curry udon, as well as curry and tempura. The cutlet variety and lineup especially stand out, and even the menu descriptions make your mouth water...

Sign describing the signature Kkot Gatsu made with pork aged 10 days

The restaurant's signature dish, 'Kkot Gatsu,' uses pork aged for 10 days, said to bloom with rich, deep umami flavor and juiciness the more you chew — hence the name (kkot means 'flower' in Korean). We ordered a good spread to try, including the Kkot Gatsu Set with loin cutlet and Hwa Udon.

※ For reference, there are many reviews saying the premium loin cutlet is just as good as the Kkot Gatsu, but it's sold in limited quantities, so if you want to try it, go early!

Eating the 19,500-won Kkot Gatsu Set with Hwa Udon and the 14,000-won loin cutlet

My husband and I ordered the Kkot Gatsu Set (Hwa Udon) for 19,500 won and the loin cutlet for 14,000 won.

After we ordered, a neatly arranged spread came out, and the pale golden color of the batter fried in clean oil, plus the vivid pink cross-section of the meat, immediately caught the eye.

Cutlet meal with rice, cabbage salad, and miso soup

The cutlets come with rice, cabbage salad, and miso soup, along with a perfect lineup of accompaniments — tonkatsu sauce, cumin salt, lemon salt, and wasabi.

The special lemon salt in particular — salty with a bright hit of lemon — cut through what could otherwise be a rich, heavy meat flavor and was totally my taste.

The cabbage salad was also so fresh and delicious!

How tender is the tenderloin Kkot Gatsu?

My husband and I ate it marveling the whole time — the Kkot Gatsu (tenderloin) instantly broke my belief that 'loin always beats tenderloin.' It was so soft it practically melted in your mouth, with a texture good enough that even people with weaker teeth could eat it comfortably.

It paired beautifully with any sauce we tried, living up to its reputation as a Dongtan pork cutlet destination.

The Hwa Udon broth chosen with the Kkot Gatsu set

The Hwa Udon that came with the set had a spicy broth like yukgaejang (spicy beef soup), loaded with hearty toppings like bean sprouts and crown daisy — perfect as a hangover cure too. The noodles soaked up the spicy broth deeply, so slurping them brought out even more heat.

Self-serve bar and take-home containers at Kkot Gatsu

One corner of Kkot Gatsu Dongtan Mokdong branch has a self-serve bar where you can freely grab extra sauces and side dishes.

Unfortunately the dried radish strips, which other blog reviews kept raving about, were sold out, so I didn't get to try them — but I'll definitely go for it again next time.

They also provide take-home containers so you can pack up leftovers yourself, which felt like a thoughtful touch from the owner. The portions are a bit much for a woman eating alone, so packing up leftover cutlet is a good option too. (Great as a side dish for rice later!)

But we cleaned our plates because it was just too delicious, haha.

A restaurant that's doing well is generous too, it seems. On our way out, they even handed us candy to freshen our mouths, a nice finishing touch to a perfect meal.
