Weekend dinner pork cutlets and Kirin beer in Dongtan: Kkot Gatsu

In short

Kkot Gatsu Dongtan Main Branch is a Korean pork cutlet (handon tonkatsu) restaurant in the Dongtan Mokdong restaurant alley in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. On a weekend evening the blogger ordered kkotkatsu (tenderloin cutlet) at 15,000 won, top loin cutlet at 14,000 won and a Kirin Ichiban beer at 4,500 won, then added cumin, lemon salt and truffle oil from the self-serve bar. The top loin had a thick, satisfying bite while the tenderloin melted away, so the table split both — and with baby chairs on hand, Kkot Gatsu works easily for family dinners with kids.

Hi, this is Mongro! Last weekend I was trying to figure out how to end the evening when I remembered a pork cutlet place in Dongtan Mokdong that a friend had recommended: Kkot Gatsu. They only use top-grade Korean pork, so the cutlets come out tender and crispy with no gamey smell — here's my honest review of a very satisfying meal!

Weekend evening at Kkot Gatsu: seating, mood and baby chairs

Inside, Kkot Gatsu Dongtan Mokdong Branch has a cozy vibe with woody interiors and yellow-toned lighting. Living up to its reputation as a well-known Dongtan Mokdong restaurant, it was already pretty full even though it was still early evening.

What we ordered at Kkot Gatsu and what it cost

At Kkot Gatsu we ordered kkotkatsu (tenderloin cutlet) for ₩15,000, top loin cutlet for ₩14,000, and a Kirin Ichiban beer for ₩4,500. There are various set menus that come with cold soba or udon, plus lots of cutlet types, so it took a while to decide what to get.

  • Kkotkatsu (tenderloin) ₩15,000
  • Top loin cutlet ₩14,000
  • Kirin Ichiban beer ₩4,500

We weren't super hungry, so we decided to save the set menus for next time and just ordered the most basic loin and tenderloin cutlets, one each!

What's at the Kkot Gatsu self-serve bar?

The self-serve bar at Kkot Gatsu has dipping sauce for the tonkatsu, cumin, wasabi, salad dressing, and side dishes. There's also truffle oil, so if you dip your cutlet lightly in salt and then drop a bit of truffle oil on top, you get a really luxurious flavor!

Top loin cutlet, 14,000 won: what comes on the tray

Here's the top loin cutlet, the one I chose. It comes with a thick cut of loin cutlet, miso soup, rice, salad, tonkatsu sauce, pickled radish, wasabi, and two kinds of salt.

The salt in the middle is lemon salt — it has a subtle, refreshing lemon scent, and dipping the cutlet in it cuts through the richness nicely.

First, the cabbage salad wakes up your appetite. The crunchy cabbage texture paired well with the dressing.

The loin cutlet was really thick. The breading stuck closely to the meat without separating, so it supported the meat's substantial texture all the way through, making for a proper satisfying bite.

You can't skip the pork cutlet and wasabi combo 💚 Even though it's the loin cut, it wasn't dry at all — it was tender, and the breading fried up crispy without feeling greasy all the way through. The juicy meat combined with the sharp wasabi kept everything clean and refreshing with no chance for it to feel heavy!

Dipping the top loin cutlet in cumin

I also grabbed the cumin from the self-serve bar to try. The exotic aroma of the cumin gave it a different charm, like eating skewered lamb or barbecue. The cumin's distinctive savoriness and spicy scent really brought out the loin's nutty flavor — now I get why they have cumin at the self-serve bar haha. I'd definitely recommend trying the loin cutlet dipped in cumin!

Kkotkatsu (tenderloin cutlet), 15,000 won: how tender is it?

Kkotkatsu is the tenderloin cutlet my partner chose. The full spread is the same as the loin cutlet. My partner insisted we needed beer with our pork cutlet and ordered a Kirin Ichiban beer too, very properly haha.

The tenderloin cutlet had a bright red pool of juice in the center — it looked moist and soft just from the look of it.

Inside the crispy breading, the meat melted in my mouth — you basically didn't need teeth for it. Genuinely so soft and juicy haha. I ordered the loin, but honestly the kkotkatsu might have been tastier...? So my partner and I ended up splitting them both, hehe.
