Suwon kalguksu restaurant with a 3-party queue: kal-nakji, Daseon

In short

Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is a kal-nakji (kalguksu noodles with octopus) restaurant on Hyanggyo-ro, within walking distance of Suwon Station. A Sunday 2pm visit meant 3 parties ahead and about 15 minutes before being seated, then kal-nakji for two at 32,000 won and a plate of suyuk (boiled pork slices) at 15,000 won, 47,000 won in total. Even at the basic spice level the broth ran a little hotter than Shin Ramyun, and alternating it with the mild pork made a solid lunch near Suwon Station.

How long is the Sunday 2pm wait at Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch?

Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch has long been famous around Suwon Station, so it was somewhere I'd wanted to try. Even visiting around 2pm on a Sunday, there were about 3 parties waiting ahead of me, and it felt like about 15 minutes before I got in.

This place isn't known for plain kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) but for the spicy kal-nakji version with octopus. Even past the lunch peak, people kept coming in. There's clearly a reason it's the place I'd been curious about.

It's within walking distance of Suwon Station, so I didn't bother parking.

Ordering kal-nakji for two and plate suyuk: 47,000 won total

What I ordered that day: kal-nakji for two at ₩32,000, and plate bossam at ₩15,000. Total ₩47,000.

Kal-nakji can only be ordered starting from 2 servings, and you can choose between mild and spicy. You can also pick brothy or thick — I went with mild and brothy.

Basic side dishes served after ordering kal-nakji

The kimchi and mu-saengchae (spicy radish salad) were tasty too.

Before the noodle soup arrived, mixing barley rice with the radish salad was a great way to wake up my appetite. The portion wasn't huge, just right for a light bite before the main dish. There's something oddly delightful about getting barley rice at a kalguksu place lol.

Kal-nakji at the basic spice level: a notch hotter than Shin Ramyun

Kal-nakji for two, ₩32,000. The bowl alone is huge. It looked like a lot in photos, but seeing it actually placed on the table, it had serious presence.

On top of the red broth were chives and gim (seaweed) flakes, with clams and octopus mixed in — the visual alone screamed spicy hangover-cure kalguksu.

I tried the broth first — oh. Even the mild version is quite spicy. By my own gauge, it felt a bit spicier than Shin Ramyun. But it's not a flat, tongue-burning heat — there's a tangy, refreshing quality to the broth alongside the spice, which kept my spoon going back in.

This is the kind of taste that says 'this'll cure a hangover.' The hot, tangy broth really opens things up, and there's an umami from the seafood that sets it apart from just a spicy soup. If you like spicy food, even the mild version should satisfy you. Now I'm curious how spicy the spicy version actually is lol.

The noodle portion is generous too. The thick knife-cut noodles are properly coated in broth, so slurping them brings that spicy flavor right along. It's not just noodles either — dig around and seafood keeps turning up. The octopus in particular was plump. It wasn't chewy in a tough way but had a satisfying, tender bite, soaked through with the spicy broth.

True to its name, kal-nakji delivers on both the noodles and the octopus. This was the best dish of the day. If you like a spicy, tangy broth, it's worth trying at least once for a Suwon lunch.

Plate bossam is ₩15,000. It felt like a shame to only have kal-nakji, so I ordered this alongside it. At ₩15,000, it's an easy, low-pressure side dish to pair along. Pork belly, boiled and served generously over a bed of chives.

The meat had no off smell and was tender. The ratio of fat to lean meat was balanced too, so it wasn't dry — more on the moist side. It's good on its own, but eating it with the chives underneath was even better. The crisp, fragrant chives cut through the richness of the pork so it didn't feel greasy.

And most of all, this bossam (boiled pork) really shines when eaten alongside the kal-nakji. Take a bite of the spicy kal-nakji broth, and right when it feels too spicy, a piece of bossam knocks the heat right back down. Then back to the noodle soup, then back to the pork. Spicy plus plain — I was glad I ordered both together.

Is Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch worth it near Suwon Station?

I could see why this place has been famous near Suwon Station for so long. Even at 2pm on a Sunday there were about 3 parties waiting ahead of me, and after a roughly 15-minute wait I got in — turnover was faster than expected.

Of what I ate, kal-nakji was definitely the highlight. Even the mild version felt a bit spicier than Shin Ramyun, with a clear tangy heat plus a refreshing seafood flavor that kept me spooning up the broth. With the plump octopus and chewy noodles, one bowl left me genuinely full.

Ordering plate bossam alongside it meant I could alternate between the spicy kal-nakji and the plain pork, and the combo worked well. If you like spicy kalguksu or are looking for a filling lunch spot near Suwon Station, it's worth a visit. Next time I go, I'll probably order the kal-nakji again.
