I only go to good places to eat! This time I was looking for a bar near Suwon Station and ended up at Yukhoe Dokjon Suwon Station Branch for fresh chilled Korean beef tartare and a shot of soju. I already love yukhoe (raw beef tartare), but this place has a popular menu item that lets you enjoy live octopus alongside it — the live octopus hanwoo yukhoe. I still remember how good the octopus-and-yukhoe combo was on a trip to Mokpo, so I had to try it here too. Both the yukhoe and the octopus at Yukhoe Dokjon were so fresh and delicious. Here's my review!

Having held its spot near Suwon Station for over ten years, the exterior had a real sense of tradition and expertise. It also had a bit of a pub-like vibe, which made it feel like exactly the right spot for yukhoe and a shot of soju.

The menu photos outside looked seriously mouth-watering, don't you think? I went in with high expectations!

What Yukhoe Dokjon feels like on a Saturday night

Once inside, the place was bigger than I expected — and packed with customers! It was a great Saturday night to feel that youthful energy. Apparently Yukhoe Dokjon is a popular spot among Suwon Station bars for group gatherings and dates. We were looking for a date spot near Suwon Station and wanted good anju (drinking snacks) with a shot of soju, so we stopped by, haha.

The Yukhoe Dokjon menu: 100% chilled hanwoo yukhoe

Menu board at Yukhoe Dokjon Suwon Station Branch

True to a specialist restaurant, the menu was simple! The prices were incredibly reasonable — this quality at this price was just surprising. Every dish is made with 100% chilled, never frozen, Korean beef, so I wanted to try them all! They said the beef is trimmed the same day and kept fresh at a low temperature, then mixed to order right before serving, so you can taste that live freshness from the first bite to the last — tender texture, no gamey smell at all. The most popular dishes are the assorted hanwoo yukhoe platter and the live octopus hanwoo yukhoe.

The free starter: beef and radish soup

As soon as we sat down, a complimentary side dish came out — beef radish soup. I took a sip of the broth first, and it was warm and clean-tasting, the kind you keep reaching for. There was even a warmer to keep the soup hot the whole time! When a place gets a basic side dish this right, you can't help wanting to order another bottle of soju. I started drinking soju from the very beginning that night.

Table set with live octopus hanwoo yukhoe and soju

Ta-da! Our order arrived and the table was set — soju, the basic radish soup, and the octopus-yukhoe. Time to dig in one by one! What we ordered was Yukhoe Dokjon's popular dish, the live octopus hanwoo yukhoe.

The moment it arrived, the presentation was flawless!

Live octopus placed beside Korean beef yukhoe

The Korean beef yukhoe was piled up beautifully, with live octopus placed right beside it — and watching the octopus wriggle on the plate, there was no doubt it was fresh. The yukhoe, too, had a vivid color that screamed freshness at first glance.

Live octopus still moving on the plate

The octopus kept moving so much that chopsticks were a struggle, so I scooped it up with a spoon! Watching it move made me even more excited, since it clearly meant maximum freshness. It kept wriggling and even tried to escape the spoon, haha.

Three sauces: black sesame, sesame oil and salt, chogochujang

Chojang sauce served with the live octopus

The sauces that came with it were black sesame sauce, sesame oil-salt sauce, and chojang (sweet-spicy vinegared chili sauce). Time to dip everything one by one!

Dipping it lightly into the sesame oil-salt sauce brought out a chewy, nutty flavor right away. The more you chew, the more that signature octopus springiness comes through — I couldn't think of a better anju for soju. And the chojang, need I even say? It turns the octopus sweet and tangy. Delicious this way, delicious that way — I really felt that freshness is everything with live octopus.

How fresh the hanwoo yukhoe tastes

Chilled Korean beef yukhoe topped with egg yolk

And now, the star of the show — the Korean beef yukhoe! The beef itself had a soft texture and a nutty flavor that got better with every chew. Whether to dip the egg yolk or pour it over is a matter of preference, but we went with dipping! Dipping it in the yolk made everything even softer and richer. The chewy texture of the yukhoe combined with the smooth, deep richness of the yolk made the flavor so much fuller.

A piece of yukhoe served with pear and radish sprouts

Dipping it along with the pear and radish sprouts brought sweet, nutty, and chewy all together — wow, it was so good! One shot of soju, then a bite of yukhoe... ah, this is exactly why people eat yukhoe with soju.

Don't skip the seaweed and yukhoe wrap

Extra seaweed served with the live octopus hanwoo yukhoe

There's a combo I really enjoyed — eating it wrapped in seaweed! (extra seaweed ₩1,000)

Yukhoe and octopus wrapped together in seaweed

I dipped a piece of yukhoe in my favorite sauce, then wrapped it up with radish sprouts, seaweed, and a bit of octopus. The fresh, nutty flavor of the yukhoe combined with the crispy, savory taste of the seaweed completely changed the flavor. Personally, I highly recommend this combo!!

And yukhoe eaten with the black sesame sauce is double the nuttiness — also highly recommended. It's a sauce you can't dip into anywhere else! You have to try it at Yukhoe Dokjon.

Soju with yukhoe: Saero Omija, 5,000 won

That day I paired the live octopus hanwoo yukhoe with soju, and since the anju was so fresh, the drinks went down smoothly. The octopus was chewy, the yukhoe was soft and nutty, and taking a spoonful of the beef radish soup in between made for a perfect drinking combo.

Saero omija soju enjoyed with the live octopus hanwoo yukhoe

We ordered the saero omija (omija berry) flavor and it was so good! So if you're looking for a good bar near Suwon Station, definitely order the saero omija soju at Yukhoe Dokjon! It's sweet and goes down easily, and it paired wonderfully with the live octopus yukhoe.

Yukhoe Dokjon as a Suwon Station bar: the verdict

A full spread of live octopus hanwoo yukhoe ready to eat

The live octopus hanwoo yukhoe I had this time had a level of freshness I couldn't find anywhere else, and I really loved it! If you're craving yukhoe near Suwon Station and want to enjoy fresh Korean beef yukhoe together with live octopus, I'd recommend saving Yukhoe Dokjon. It's also a good spot near Suwon Station for a date, a blind date, a casual drink with friends, or chatting over good anju with a partner. Next time, I think I'll try the live octopus hanwoo yukhoe with cheese added.
