Suwon Station lunch: bibim kalguksu and spicy octopus at Daseon

Why is a kalguksu place all about the octopus stir-fry, you ask? Because there's a hidden gem here haha. Everyone says the kalguksu (hand-cut noodle soup) is great, but honestly I think the nakji-bokkeum (stir-fried octopus) is even better... let me recommend this Suwon local favorite!

Where is Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch, and what are its hours?

Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is near the end of the Rodeo Street by Suwon Station. Hours are 10:30 - 22:00, with a break time from 15:30 - 17:00.

If you walk all the way down the Rodeo Street near Suwon Station, you'll reach this place that's kept its blue sign for ages!!! It's so old-school that every Suwon local knows it haha. Even though I went after lunch hour that day, there was still a wait..!! Definitely a proven local favorite.

Daseon Kalguksu menu and han-sang set prices

Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch's menu goes beyond kalguksu, with a wide range of sides and drinking snacks too. The han-sang set (table set) comes with 3 main dishes for about ₩60,000.

Here's the menu lineup! Kal-nakji (noodles with octopus) is the most popular dish — order it for two and it comes out in a huge bowl, seriously great value!!!! Besides kalguksu there are plenty of sides and drinking snacks too, so it seems like a lot of people come in the evening for a drink.

They also sell a han-sang set for great value! 3 main dishes for about ₩60,000 sounds like a good deal.

Side dishes at Daseon: barley rice and pickled chili

When you order at Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch, you get geotjeori-style kimchi (freshly mixed kimchi), radish salad, and barley rice on the side. Pickled chili peppers are also set on the table by default.

The side dishes that come with your order! The kimchi here is the geotjeori (freshly mixed) style, which I love — I'm not a fan of the well-fermented kind haha.

And they give you barley rice like this — it's seriously delicious, the grains are firm and chewy in the best way. Mix it in with the radish salad and gochujang (red chili paste) side and it beats any appetizer, hands down.

There's also pickled chili on the table by default! It goes perfectly with kalguksu — don't skip it, eat it together!

Meanwhile, in the kitchen, they're properly searing smoky flavor into my octopus stir-fry! I'm so excited~~~

The table filled up with so many dishes — again looks like enough for three but it's just the two of us eating it haha. But it's so good we can finish it all!

Bul-nakji-bokkeum, 35,000 won: plump smoky octopus

Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch's bul-nakji-bokkeum (smoky stir-fried octopus) is ₩35,000. It's stir-fried to order with a smoky char, and the octopus pieces are large so they don't shrink up.

The octopus stir-fry comes out glossy and cut into big chunky pieces — probably because it's seared with smoky flavor right before serving, it looks extra appetizing!!

Both the cabbage and the octopus are nice and large-sized.

Usually octopus stir-fry shrinks down and ends up small and bland, but here the octopus stays plump — seriously amazing!!! It's not chewy either, and biting into it releases so much juice.

Are barley rice refills free at Daseon Kalguksu?

Barley rice at Daseon Kalguksu Main Branch is refillable. I only found this out when I asked about getting an extra bowl of rice.

I've come here so many times... but I only just found out the barley rice is refillable. I was so hungry that day, I asked to add a bowl of rice, and guess what!!!!!!!!!!!! Turns out the barley rice itself gets refilled hahaha. They gave me a totally full bowl.

Bibim kalguksu, 12,000 won: noodles mixed by hand

Bibim kalguksu (mixed noodle soup) is ₩12,000, served with chewy noodles and the seasoning sauce on the side — you put on plastic gloves and mix it yourself. They give you plenty of sauce, but it's not too salty; the seasoning is just right.

You get chewy kalguksu noodles and the seasoning sauce separately! They also give you plastic gloves, so you mix it all up by hand,, now ready to eat!

The secret sauce, curious about it! They're generous with the sauce, so it's great for mixing, but it's not too salty — the seasoning is spot on!

Even the noodles alone are springy and chewy — clearly they know what they're doing!!

Mixing barley rice into the leftover octopus sauce

Mixing the refilled barley rice into the bul-nakji-bokkeum sauce was the best combo of the day. The spice level is moderately spicy.

I mixed the refilled rice all into the octopus stir-fry sauce and it was ridiculously good... polished off a whole bowl of rice, no problem. The spice level is exactly the kind Koreans love — just spicy enough!

Every so often I'd eat some bibim kalguksu too, and the tangy-spicy flavor made the octopus stir-fry go down even easier.

The portion is quite generous too! Just this one bowl alone would make a solid lunch.

No matter how much we ate, the octopus just didn't run out.. seriously so much!!! This definitely qualifies as a good-value restaurant too. Everyone should try the octopus stir-fry!

I also tried mixing the bibim kalguksu into the octopus sauce haha. So good!!!!! Every time I come here it's a genuine favorite... we ate until we were stuffed, and the portions were generous throughout — highly recommend! If you're looking for a place to eat near Suwon Station, this is it.
