Yongin squid sashimi restaurant with 62,000-won live set: Mr. Ojingeo

In short

Mr. Ojingeo Yongin Bojeong is a squid sashimi (raw fish) restaurant on the Bojeong-dong café street in Yongin, Gyeonggi. Two of us shared the live squid set for 2–3 people at 62,000 won, made with squid scooped from the tank out front, and it came with squid sashimi, fried squid and mixed raw fish plus side dishes like steamed egg and gosiraegi seaweed — enough to leave us stuffed. The fresh squid sashimi and the fried squid, which was not greasy at all, are what make Mr. Ojingeo worth the trip.

Mr. Ojingeo Yongin Bojeong: squid sashimi on Bojeong-dong café street

Mr. Ojingeo Yongin Bojeong branch is a squid sashimi specialty restaurant on the Bojeong-dong café street in Yongin. Today~ I was craving fresh squid sashimi, so I went with Seorang to check out 'Mr. Ojingeo Yongin Bojeong' on the Bojeong-dong café street!!

The squid flapping around fresh and lively in the tank out front... sorry guys, but you really do look fresh and delicious..

What is the seating and atmosphere like at Mr. Ojingeo?

Mr. Ojingeo Yongin Bojeong has tables for four, and there are also spacious seats along the edges of the shop that look like they could work for groups!! There were a lot of customers so I couldn't get a photo, but there were window seats with floor-to-ceiling glass that gave it an outdoor-dining kind of feel.

What comes in the 62,000-won live squid set?

Squid sashimi is the main event, but they also had a wide variety of fresh sashimi and seafood ready! The steamed whole squid looked delicious too so I agonized for a while... but in the end I wanted to eat the squid while it was still (sort of) alive and kicking, so we ordered the live squid set!!

Now that it's turning into autumn, salt-grilled king prawns and raw shrimp sashimi are also available to order! Actually the table behind us seemed to be eating salt-grilled king prawns, and the smell of the grilled shrimp was so nutty and good ㅠㅠㅠ But we saved the shrimp for another time and decided to focus on the flapping-fresh squid sashimi today!!!

Which side dishes are served?

The banchan (side dishes) included seaweed soup, corn salad, aged kimchi, gondre, and steamed egg! The steamed egg came in a hot stone pot so it stayed warm for a long time, and eating a bite of it between bites of sashimi was so good ㅠㅠ

And such a nice touch... the default water they serve is chilled hutgae tea (raisin tree tea)!!! We were planning to go hard on soju today so we downed the hutgae tea in one go too.

Ta-da~ such a solid, generous spread with the live squid set ㅠㅠ It's a 2-3 person set! We're seafood lovers so we were determined to finish it just the two of us, and it was so hearty and filling that it was amazing but also — trying to finish it between just two people, we really thought we'd burst ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

For a couple of seafood lovers like us, this was a max-satisfaction spread ㅠㅠㅠㅠ Looking at these photos again, I want to eat it all over again......

Cheers again~! To make room for all the seafood...! We went for soju instead of filling up on water ><

How does the squid sashimi taste, straight from the tank?

The squid sashimi at Mr. Ojingeo Yongin Bojeong comes straight from the squid that was flapping around in the tank out front. For my first bite, I dipped the fresh squid — the one that had just been swimming — deep into chojang (vinegared gochujang sauce), and it was so fresh and chewy...! The freshness was on a different level compared to squid sashimi I've had at other raw fish restaurants...!! I'm so glad I ordered the squid sashimi ㅠㅠㅠ Definitely lives up to being the signature dish!!!

Wrapped in perilla leaves and lettuce with squid sashimi, ssamjang, garlic, chili, and gondre on top!! With so many side dishes to pair it with, every bite tasted a little different ㅠㅠㅠ Such a happy flavor..

The raw fish sashimi was also incredibly fresh and delicious!!!

I tried it on top of aged kimchi too, and also just with wasabi and radish sprouts, nom nom.

The surprise favourite: fried squid

And then, this was way better than expected..? I didn't have high hopes, but the fried squid was so good. I'm not usually into fried food, but this fried squid had zero greasiness and was so crispy! The texture was packed with squid meat too!!! Dipped in wasabi soy sauce, I just kept going back for more!!! They really seemed to be frying it in clean oil. As part of a review event, we got to try 8 pieces of fried shrimp on the house — I'll have to try the fried shrimp next time too haha.
