On a day near Giheung Station when only a warm, brothy meal will do, a menu that combines shabu-shabu and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) fits the mood pretty well. This time I visited Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Giheung Station Branch, on the basement 2nd floor of ICT Valley Building B, 58 Giheung-ro. I ordered the spicy mushroom kalguksu, made with Deungchon's signature spicy broth loaded with mushrooms and minari (water dropwort), along with a barley shrimp minari pancake.
To cut to the conclusion: the spicy broth and fragrant minari worked better together than I expected, and adding the minari pancake with barley shrimp brought a nutty flavor that kept the whole meal satisfying.

Mushroom kalguksu menu and price: 10,000 won per person
The menu turned out to be simpler than I expected, which actually made ordering easier. The main screen showed spicy mushroom kalguksu, clear mushroom kalguksu, and perilla seed mushroom kalguksu, all priced at ₩10,000 per person as shown in the photos.

Since I like spicy broths, I went straight for the spicy mushroom kalguksu without much thought. What's distinctive about Deungchon is that you eat shabu-shabu style first, then move on to the kalguksu noodles, so even with a single menu item, the meal never felt monotonous.

Spicy mushroom kalguksu starts with the broth
When the dish arrived, the first thing I noticed was the pot piled high with minari. Plenty of green minari sat on top, with mushrooms and other ingredients underneath — it looked hearty just from the presentation.

As the pot started to boil, the minari and mushrooms blended into the broth, and the spicy aroma rising up really got my appetite going. Even in photos the amount of minari looks substantial, so anyone who loves minari will find this visual appealing.
How the spicy broth and minari tasted together
At first the spiciness of the broth comes through, then eating it together with the minari adds its distinctive fragrant taste. Adding the mushrooms changes the texture too, so it never felt like a single flat flavor.
Rather than a broth that leaves only heavy heat behind, cooking the minari and mushrooms together lets you enjoy the ingredients' flavor alongside the spice, which kept me reaching back for more. The longer the broth simmered, the more the ingredients naturally blended, and the flavor seemed to deepen from the first spoonful.

Why the meal isn't complete until the kalguksu noodles
After enjoying the shabu-shabu portion, I added the kalguksu noodles. What started centered on minari and mushrooms shifted in both feel and texture once the noodles went in. The spicy broth soaked into the noodles, seasoning them naturally, and it became a different meal altogether from the shabu-shabu course before it.
So I found myself thinking it's best to plan ahead for the kalguksu from the start and leave enough broth for it. Rather than eating shabu-shabu and kalguksu as separate dishes, it felt like one continuous course, which made for a leisurely meal.

The barley shrimp minari pancake was more impressive than expected
The other dish I ordered for this meal was the barley shrimp minari pancake. In the photo you can see the minari packed in without a single gap.

Pancakes can sometimes feel dominated by the flour batter, but this minari pancake clearly let the minari take center stage. Barley shrimp scattered throughout added a nutty, slightly salty flavor on top of that.

Eating it alongside the spicy mushroom kalguksu worked well too. After a spoonful of the spicy broth, a bite of the pancake brought a crispy, nutty flavor, along with the distinctive taste of the barley shrimp.
Because the minari and barley shrimp were both packed in, it felt richer in aroma and flavor than a plain oil-fried pancake. Personally, while I liked the broth of the spicy mushroom kalguksu, the barley shrimp minari pancake was genuinely delicious in its own right. Ordering a spicy broth dish alongside a pancake also meant I could go back and forth between two very different flavors.
Finishing with fried rice: worth adding?
On the menu screen I could also see fried rice listed as an add-on item. It's well known that many people finish their Deungchon meal with fried rice after the shabu-shabu and kalguksu.

Since I'd already had the barley shrimp minari pancake that day, I didn't add the fried rice. Next time, I think it would be worth trying the full course through to the fried rice as well.

Why this menu combination works for a meal near Giheung Station
What stuck with me most after eating at Deungchon Shabu Kalguksu Giheung Station Branch was how much the flavor and texture changed within a single meal. It starts with a shabu-shabu-style course of spicy broth, minari, and mushrooms, then continues on to kalguksu noodles. Adding the barley shrimp minari pancake brings a crispy pancake into the mix as well.
For anyone who prefers enjoying a variety of textures over eating one thing the whole meal, this felt like a good fit. It's especially satisfying if you like minari — the fragrant minari pairs well with the spicy broth, and the pancake lets you enjoy the nutty combination of minari and shrimp.
