Whole chicken hot pot with potato pancake and noodles: Sugyeokok

In short

Sugyeokok Bundang Migeum is a dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot) restaurant in Seongnam, Gyeonggi, a 5-minute walk from Migeum Station Exit 4. Four coworkers visited at the 11:30am opening rush for lunch and ordered 3 servings of dak hanmari plus a potato pancake and 2 servings of added noodles, with a broth that was spicy-savory and free of any chicken smell, and a potato pancake a first-time visitor kept raving about. A solid pick for both a restorative lunch and a work dinner.

A coworker said she felt run down at lunchtime and wanted something restorative, so I took her to Sugyeokok, famous around Gumi-dong. It was so good last time that this was a repeat visit!! It's a restaurant specializing in dak hanmari (whole chicken hot pot).

A restaurant vibe that works solo or for a work dinner

We did an opening rush visit at 11:30am. The restaurant was spacious and clean, and the staff were very kind. With tables for 2, tables for 4, and group seating, it works for solo diners, family meals, friend gatherings, and work dinners alike — a real Gumi-dong local favorite.

Basic table setting with dipping sauce, minced garlic, and water kimchi

Beyond its signature dak hanmari, Sugyeokok puts just as much care into side dishes like the sweet-and-tangy chicken salad and crispy potato pancake, insisting on domestic ingredients only. Takeout and delivery are available too, so you can enjoy the same experience at home. The dipping sauce, minced garlic, and water kimchi come out first, one after another.

Side dishes set out for dak hanmari on the table

What 4 people ordered: 3 servings of dak hanmari

There were 4 of us, and we ordered 3 servings, which comes with half a whole chicken. We added a potato pancake as a side, plus 2 servings of noodles. You can also add egg porridge depending on your taste.

Pot of 3 servings of dak hanmari in clear broth

The clear broth may look mild, but it's got a subtle kick to it. Highly recommended restorative food for anyone who wants a warm soup dish with a shot of soju. The dak hanmari broth is genuinely excellent — absolutely no chicken smell, just a clean flavor.

Fishing the chicken out on a timer

The staff sets a timer, and when it goes off, you fish the chicken out to eat. Built on broth simmered from scratch without artificial additives, it opens with a clean, refreshing first taste and deepens into a savory richness the longer it boils, leaving a lingering aftertaste.

The chicken itself is clean-tasting and light, not dry at all — soft and easy to keep eating. Paired with the water kimchi that came with it, the umami was excellent.

It was so good I forgot to take photos. Here's a hasty shot of just the leftover bones.

Visual of the side-dish potato pancake

Hand-julienned, fried potato pancake

The visual on the side-dish potato pancake is amazing, right? Instead of a grated potato pancake, it's julienned by hand and fried, so the texture is super crispy and nutty — I think kids would love it too.

Spicy flying fish roe is piled on top of the potato pancake, and though you can't quite see it, it's packed with cheese inside, stretching softly with every bite. You could really feel the owner's care in not skimping on ingredients.

I love potato pancakes, but making them myself is a hassle, so I rarely do it. From now on, whenever I'm craving potato pancake, I think I'll just come to Sugyeokok. My coworker, visiting for the first time today, kept raving about how good the potato pancake was. Since I was the one who recommended and brought her here, seeing her satisfied made me feel proud and happy.

2 added servings of fresh noodles

2 added servings of noodles — is it enough?

And the 2 servings of noodles we added. That's plenty for 4 people. Since the noodles are already partially cooked, you can eat them as soon as they start boiling.

The broth was so rich and clean that we kept drinking it, and the staff topped off our pot with more broth. The noodles stayed chewy all the way through without going soft — I'd strongly recommend this place for its noodles too.

Sugyeokok's water kimchi is really good. I don't usually love kimchi, but I kept reaching for it and even asked for a refill.
