Suwon date spot with a photo zone for tom yum noodles: Madam Hao

In short

Madam Hao is a Vietnamese restaurant in the back alley behind the Ajou University food street in Suwon, Gyeonggi. On a walking date with my boyfriend, Madam Hao's tom yum rice-noodle soup came with a spicy-sour broth deepened by rich meat stock, while the bun cha piled up charcoal-grilled pork and a generous mound of noodles. Cilantro is not served on the side, but with the entrance photo zone and dedicated parking, Madam Hao works well as a date course.

Today I'm bringing you a review of Madam Hao, a Vietnamese restaurant that nailed my taste perfectly, from the vibe all the way down to the flavors!

The weather's been so nice lately that my boyfriend and I have been holding hands and going on walking dates around the neighborhood. In an alley, a newly opened-looking spot bursting with Hanoi vibes caught my eye instantly. Drawn in by its exotic yet warm charm, I wandered in almost as if I'd been enchanted. Let me walk you through exactly what we tasted and felt!

Where is Madam Hao, and is there parking?

Madam Hao sits in the alley behind the Ajou University food street. Who knew such a pretty, atmospheric place was hiding this close to home!

The exterior alone gives off retro yet distinctly exotic Hanoi vibes, so I was already impressed just standing at the entrance. The building's design and color scheme come together to give it a real presence at a glance. Plus, there's a dedicated parking space right in front of the restaurant, so anyone driving in can eat comfortably without worrying about parking.

The photo zone at Madam Hao: day and night looks

Near the entrance, Madam Hao has a cute, carefully styled photo zone. I asked my boyfriend to snap a few shots, and it was perfect for getting some great pictures.

During the day it's a cozy space for a solid, tidy meal, but once evening falls, the soft lighting comes on and it transforms into a unique, atmospheric bar — a nice twist.

Stepping through the door, the warm wood tones and cozy lighting blend together neatly, giving off an even more romantic feel 💛 The tables are spaced generously and the whole place feels pleasant, making it a great fit for a date course. During our meal, I noticed plenty of couples, but also families with kids and college students chatting away happily.

Kiosk ordering and the free cha gio review event

Ordering at Madam Hao is easy through the smart kiosk installed at each table. The menu is packed with all kinds of authentic Vietnamese-style dishes, so I found myself happily agonizing over what to pick every time I flipped the page.

💡 One tip! If you take part in the Naver receipt review event, they'll throw in 2 crispy, savory cha gio (fried spring rolls) as a free treat. Definitely make sure to grab this little event when you visit.

On one side of the table, the sauces were set up neatly and hygienically. There was also a helpful sign explaining 'How to enjoy Madam Hao,' clearly meant for people new to Vietnamese food — a thoughtful touch from the owner.

While waiting for our order, they brought out cold water along with crispy, savory shrimp chips. By the time we'd crunched through those, our main dishes started arriving one by one.

The dishes we carefully picked today were tom yum pho and bun cha!

Tom yum rice-noodle soup: spicy-sour broth, no cilantro

Madam Hao's tom yum pho grabbed my attention right away with a bowl so full it looked like it might overflow 🍲 The tangy, spicy tom yum aroma hit my nose sharply. I carefully took a big first spoonful of the broth.

Noodles lifted with chopsticks from the tom yum pho

The signature spicy-sour-sweet umami of tom yum wrapped gently around the deep flavor of the meat stock — truly a work of art. If I had to name one drawback, it's that we love cilantro and wanted to pile it on, but sadly it wasn't offered separately. Still, the tom yum broth's own flavor was so solid and complete that it delivered plenty of intense, deep character even without it!

The noodles were so springy and chewy, soaking up the rich broth all the way through. The bowl was loaded with generous toppings, and no matter how much we ate it never seemed to shrink — a genuinely great-value portion. It's perfect for curing a hangover, and it's the kind of spicy, exotic broth that'll come to mind first whenever that craving hits!

Bun cha at Madam Hao: the same plate we ate in Nha Trang

Next up, Madam Hao's bun cha (grilled pork with rice noodles) had my mouth watering the moment it arrived. It came out just as generously as the local version we had on a trip to Nha Trang, Vietnam last year. The amount of rice noodles included as standard was staggering — we both gaped at the towering pile.

The seasoned, golden-brown charcoal-grilled pork had no gamey smell at all and was wonderfully tender. Tasting a piece of the meat on its own, the charcoal aroma was deeply infused, exploding with rich umami in every bite.

Noodles, vegetables, and pork arranged on a small plate with sauce poured over

As instructed by the sign on the table, they arranged springy rice noodles, fresh vegetables, and the sweet-savory pork neatly on a small plate. Then we poured the sweet-spicy-sour bun cha sauce generously over it and mixed it all together!

The crunch of fresh vegetables, the meat carrying that gentle charcoal aroma, the moist noodles, and the tangy-sweet sauce all came together to fill my mouth with a fresh yet satisfying flavor! Honestly, it felt even more refined than what we had in Nha Trang and suited Korean tastes perfectly, so my boyfriend and I kept gasping in delight as we devoured it.

Is Madam Hao a good date course near Ajou University?

Madam Hao, a must-visit spot near Ajou University that captures Hanoi's traditional retro charm and vibrant local flavors! My boyfriend and I had a meal and a date that exceeded expectations. The minor disappointment of no cilantro was completely erased by the rich tom yum broth and the generous, fresh bun cha.

Since it's right near home, I think I'll keep coming back like a regular whenever I crave Vietnamese food. If you're looking for a good-vibe date spot near Ajou University, or a satisfying pho and bun cha restaurant, I highly recommend giving Madam Hao a visit! 👍
