Grill house in Hannam-dong, Seoul: Set B pork jowl at Miraehoegwan

I was craving meat, so I went to Miraehoegwan Hannam, a premium grilling restaurant that's been getting hot lately in Hannam-dong haha. Cutting to the conclusion — this was the best Korean BBQ place I've been to in Hannam-dong (not an exaggeration, I mean it!!). The balance of charcoal aroma and juiciness really impressed me, so let me quickly write it up~!!

What is Miraehoegwan Hannam like inside?

Miraehoegwan Hannam is on the 2nd floor of a building on Daesagwan-ro 31-gil. Without the usual greasy smell or smoke of a typical Korean BBQ place, the clean, modern interior stands out haha.

Head up to the 2nd floor and the restaurant appears

The tables have generous spacing, and thanks to the tasteful lighting it feels more like a high-end dining space or a hip lounge than a typical BBQ joint~! Perfect for a date or a gathering spot!!

What comes with the basic table setting

The basic setup at Miraehoegwan Hannam includes 4 kinds of sauces, basic side dishes, special cheongyang chili soy sauce, salad, and a sukju (mung bean sprout) vegetable iron plate. I'd made a Naver Reservation so everything was already set up when I arrived — each item was neat and generous.

• 4 kinds of accompanying sauces: salt, a ssamjang (thick soybean paste)-based special sauce, wasabi, chili pesto and more — mix and match to your taste
• Basic side dishes: crunchy, savory scallion kimchi, refreshing and clean white kimchi, wild garlic leaves, and pickled onion, which cut nicely through the meat's richness
• Special cheongyang chili soy sauce: finely chopped spicy cheongyang chili raises the flavor of the meat with a spicy, savory kick (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 this was genuinely delicious)

• Salad & vegetable iron plate: a fresh salad with dressing comes with a sizzling sukju vegetable iron plate for an even more filling meal. The sukju came out after we ordered it, just so you know~

Hoegwan Set A or Set B: which one to order

At Miraehoegwan Hannam I debated between Hoegwan Set A and B, but I was craving pork jowl and skirt steak more than pork neck, so I went with Set B. It was nice to be able to order easily via the T Order tablet installed at each table haha.

Miraehoegwan's biggest strength is that friendly staff who've received grilling training cook your meat with care from start to finish haha. They sear the meat on the grill with strong heat, and at first I thought 'wait, isn't that getting a little burnt?' — they crisped up the surface that much!!

Crispy on the outside with savory juices locked in inside — a textbook example of crispy-outside-juicy-inside perfection that had me gasping the moment I bit into it haha.

With the faint charcoal aroma filling my mouth and the chewy-yet-tender texture, I immediately understood why so many people call this their best-ever meat experience. Once the meat was fully cooked, they placed it on the crunchy sukju sprouts and shishito peppers on the iron plate, so every last bite stayed warm and moist~!!

Finishing with doenjang rice with wine

After the meat, I also ordered doenjang (soybean paste) rice with wine as the finishing meal — and it was also seriously delicious!! On a savory, countryside-style doenjang base, it's generously loaded with big chunks of tofu, zucchini, vegetables, and tender meat, giving it a deep, rich broth haha.

The savory broth seeps into every grain of rice, filling you up satisfyingly and completely resetting your palate after all that richness — the best side dish.
