Jeju sashimi takeaway for a sisters' lunch: Dutumhoe Dongmun Market

In short

Dutumhoe Dongmun Market Main Branch is a sashimi and sushi takeaway shop inside the night market at Gate 8 of Dongmun Market in Jeju, Jeju. The writer packed futomaki, salmon-and-flounder sashimi, and coconut fried shrimp into a cooler bag for a sisters' lunch, and everything stayed fresh even after being carried around for 1-2 hours. Dutumhoe is the takeaway spot for days when sitting down at a sashimi restaurant feels like too much.

Even though I live in Jeju, I really love visiting Dongmun Market. Just browsing is fun, but it's the kind of market that always tricks you into leaving with something in your hands — and there are so many old-school favorites here too.

That day I was heading to my older sister's place. The three of us — me, my younger sister, and my older sister — were meeting up for lunch, and going empty-handed felt wrong, but cooking something felt like too much effort... you know that feeling.

So I headed to Dongmun Market. There's so much takeaway food there that it's perfect for exactly this situation. I was originally just going to buy some sushi, but after standing in front of the display cases browsing, I ended up grabbing this and that.

Today I'm introducing Dutumhoe Dongmun Market Main Branch, located inside the night market at Gate 8 of Dongmun Market.

Basic info and parking for Dutumhoe Dongmun Market Main Branch

  • Address: 16 Gwandeok-ro 14-gil, Jeju-si (Dongmun Market Gate 8 – inside the night market)
  • Hours: Daily 11:00–21:00 (closes early when sold out)
  • Closed: No off days
  • Takeout / delivery / reservation: All available

Parking tip! You can use the Dongmun Traditional Market public parking lot right nearby — the first 30 minutes are free. Dongmun Market is bigger than it looks, so I'd recommend parking near the gate closest to the shop you're heading to.

Storefront and atmosphere

Right at the entrance of the Dongmun Market night market, there's a big blue sign that says Dutumhoe, so it's not hard to find at all! There's also a fish tank next to it that's kept spotless, which made me trust the place as a sashimi takeaway shop.

Dutumhoe isn't really a sit-down restaurant — it's a takeaway specialist. Sashimi, sushi, gimbap (seaweed rice roll), and futomaki (thick sushi roll) are all laid out in the display case, so the best part is being able to see and choose everything with your own eyes.

Picks from the display case

This is the coconut fried shrimp. Doesn't it look plump and delicious? We couldn't resist the visuals and ordered it. Since it was kept in a glass case, it felt a lot more reassuring hygiene-wise.

Futomaki displayed in the case

Sushi, mackerel pressed sushi, and futomaki were all lined up. Everything looked so good that we spent a long time deciding what to pick. The sushi itself is so popular that apparently it sells out if you're not there in the morning.

There was also a wide variety of popular sashimi types you'd look for in Jeju — flounder, salmon, flounder+salmon, sweet shrimp, and an assorted platter — so many that it was hard to choose. The owner kindly explained the assorted platter for us: sea bream, cutlassfish, a prized fin cut, and blanched cuttlefish — the composition was so hearty it seemed like it would make a great side dish for drinks too. We bought salmon+flounder for lunch, but I thought buying the assorted platter for a drink at night would be really good too.

A sashimi takeaway recommendation for your first or last day in Jeju

There's something I always tell people around me who are coming to travel in Jeju.

On your first or last day in Jeju, definitely stop by Dongmun Market, grab some takeaway, and eat it while relaxing at your accommodation.

Especially when you come to Jeju wanting sashimi, but sitting down at a sashimi restaurant feels like a bit much some days, right? Even more so if you're traveling with kids. That's exactly when Dutumhoe is perfect.

Cooler bag packed with ice packs
Vinegar-chili sauce, soy sauce and wasabi packed together

Cooler bag packing held up fine even after 1-2 hours

This was the part I liked most — they pack everything carefully into a cooler bag with ice packs. I didn't go straight to my sister's place after picking up the order; I ran a few errands in between. But the packing was thorough enough that it was fine even carried around for 1-2 hours, so I didn't have to worry about the sashimi spoiling the whole way there. They include vinegar-chili sauce, soy sauce, and wasabi too, so once you get home, all you have to do is take it out and pick up your chopsticks.

Unpacking review

Sashimi takeaway spread laid out at home
Thickly sliced salmon and flounder sashimi

Once we unwrapped everything and laid out the spread, the visuals alone were incredible. The name Dutumhoe (meaning 'thick sashimi') wasn't for nothing — the slices are cut thick, just the right size to enjoy. One bite in, you feel that chewy texture right away, and the savory flavor keeps building as you chew. The salmon was so soft that all of us, being on diets, ate it happily.

Large futomaki packed with filling

Futomaki too big to fit in one bite

The size is on another level. It's so big you can't fit it in one bite — you have to open wide and take a big chomp, and that's when all the filling flavors hit you at once. Just one of these was filling enough to work as a full lunch on its own.

A plate of coconut fried shrimp

The coconut fried shrimp had really substantial shrimp too. You know how some places have thick batter but tiny shrimp the size of your fingernail? Not here. Crispy outside, plump and springy inside. The coconut aroma lingers subtly while the savory flavor spreads out, and it was perfect to pick up one at a time between bites of sashimi. By the time it had cooled down a bit, the crispiness wasn't quite as strong, but I think it would be amazing eaten hot right at the night market. Even so, the three of us sat there chatting and finished it off in no time.

Final thoughts

  • At Dutumhoe you can pick out sashimi + sushi + futomaki + fried food all in one place
  • The cooler bag packing is thorough enough that you don't need to worry even with a long travel time
  • It's close to Jeju Airport, so it's a low-hassle stop on your first or last day of travel

It's not just for travelers — locals like me find it great for picking up food for family gatherings or when guests are coming over. If you're wondering what to buy for Jeju sashimi takeaway, a sashimi restaurant near Dongmun Market, or something from the Dongmun night market, give Dutumhoe Dongmun Market Main Branch a try. Laying out a full spread at home and sharing it made the whole day feel satisfying. Thanks for the meal again today :)
