Jinju cold noodle restaurant with baby chairs at noon: Song Giwon

In short

Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch is a Jinju naengmyeon (cold noodle) restaurant on Modeok-ro in Jinju, Gyeongnam. Arriving at noon on a weekend, the writer just made it into the last open seat and ordered Sunjo 1800 (Jinju mul-naengmyeon, cold noodles in broth) and Song Giwon 1997 (Jinju seokkeum-naengmyeon, mixed cold noodles), with a self-serve hot broth bar, baby chairs and a parking lot right in front. Generous yukjeon (pan-fried beef slices) over a seafood broth make Song Giwon a solid lunch stop on a Jinju trip.

What food comes to mind first when you think of Jinju? For me, it's always the cool, deep flavor of Jinju naengmyeon (cold noodles).

Today I'm writing up a detailed review of Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch, a genuine Jinju naengmyeon spot that draws not just locals but visitors from all over the country. It's already famous for its generous yukjeon (pan-fried beef slices) topping and deeply savory seafood broth, so I went in with high expectations!

The first thing that caught my eye when I arrived was the clean, impressively large exterior. Having a parking lot right in front of the store made it especially convenient to visit by car.

How long is the wait at noon on a weekend?

On weekends or during peak hours, crowds can build up fast — we barely managed to grab a seat right at noon on a weekend. Right after that, a wait line formed immediately! If you're planning to visit, I'd recommend getting there a bit early.

Waiting machine installed at the entrance

Once inside, there's a waiting machine set up near the entrance. Oh, and there were also baby chairs ready inside for families visiting with young children. (Unfortunately I didn't manage to get a photo of those!)

What's on the menu at Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon?

Once seated, I looked over the menu board carefully. The signature items you'd expect from a real Jinju naengmyeon place were neatly laid out — from the basic mul-naengmyeon (cold noodle soup) that fully showcases the deep flavor of the seafood broth, to the sweet-and-spicy bibim-naengmyeon (mixed cold noodles), and even a distinctive mul-bibim-naengmyeon that lets you enjoy both styles at once.

On this visit we finally settled on Sunjo 1800 (Jinju mul-naengmyeon) and Song Giwon 1997 (Jinju seokkeum-naengmyeon)!

Self-serve hot broth bar and celebrity autographs

While waiting for our order, I tried out the self-serve hot broth corner set up on one side of the restaurant. Since it's self-serve, you can help yourself without feeling awkward, which was really nice. Taking a sip of the richly brewed hot broth, it was so savory and deep that it comfortably filled my stomach even before the noodles arrived, building anticipation even further.

Looking around the walls, there were tons of signed autographs from famous celebrities. It really felt like the kind of place worthy of its reputation as a Jinju naengmyeon spot people travel from all over the country to visit.

How does Sunjo 1800 mul-naengmyeon taste?

The first thing we tried was the basic, bestselling mul-naengmyeon. The broth at Song Giwon Jinju Naengmyeon Main Branch had a truly next-level savoriness unique to a deep broth. It had a different charm from store-bought naengmyeon or typical Pyongyang-style naengmyeon — not overly strong, yet very clean, the kind of taste that anyone, regardless of age or gender, could enjoy. In particular, thin, golden-fried, savory yukjeon was piled generously on top of the noodles, and eating the chewy noodles together with the tender yukjeon created a perfectly balanced combination of textures and flavors.

Song Giwon 1997: the mixed cold noodles with broth

Next, we tried the mul-bibim-naengmyeon, which is always the best solution when you're torn between mul-naengmyeon and bibim-naengmyeon. It's characterized by a sweet-and-spicy special sauce placed over a generous pour of cool broth, letting you enjoy a moist, rich flavor all the way to the last bite.

Rather than being harshly spicy, the sauce had a subtle, appetite-boosting savoriness that kept my chopsticks moving nonstop. This dish also came with plenty of soft yukjeon on top, and the savory yukjeon gently wrapped around the spicy sauce for a fantastic pairing.
