Daegu pork belly and pork neck grill near Dongdaegu Station: Hubaldae
In short
Hubaldae Dongdaegu Station Branch is a Korean pork BBQ restaurant in Shincheon-dong, Dong-gu, Daegu, about a 5-minute walk from Dongdaegu Station and Daegu Shinsegae Department Store. On a weekday evening before a train, there was no wait for a table, and both the Hanpork hwangto fresh pork belly and the fresh pork neck were ordered at 14,900 won each, grilled at the table by the owner, who also suggested wrapping the meat with honey potato, kimchi-jjaglae and basil. It was the first Korean BBQ place I had seen serve fresh herbs, and picking your own combination made the meal genuinely fun.

I got a craving for pork belly before catching a train from Dongdaegu Station, so I went looking for a tableside-grilled pork belly place near Daegu Shinsegae Department Store and ended up at Hubaldae Dongdaegu Station Branch, a well-known Sincheon-dong BBQ spot! It was a weekday evening, so I got seated right away with no wait.

Inside Hubaldae: the dining room and the signed baseballs
The inside had a bright, cheerful vibe — an easy, unpretentious place to bring close friends. It was full of a mix of group tables and pairs like us, so quite a variety of customers.

It looks like Samsung Lions baseball players stop by now and then — there was a whole row of signed balls and autograph cards displayed on one wall. Felt oddly exciting to see 🥸

I've been reaching for non-alcoholic beer a lot lately, so I love restaurants that carry it 🫶

Side dishes and the basil and shepherd's purse herb plate
As soon as we sat down, a whole spread of basic side dishes to go with the meat came out — sliced honey potato, jeotgal (salted seafood), wasabi, scallion salad, myeongi namul (wild garlic leaves), garlic, mushrooms, sundae (blood sausage), and more, which got me even more excited for the meat. There were more accompanying vegetables than I expected, so it was fun mixing and matching combinations.

Unlike other places, the greens also included herb-type vegetables — basil and shepherd's purse. They come lightly cooked, and eating them with the meat, the fragrant herb aroma cut through the greasiness of the pork in a special, really nice way. Sauces came in two kinds: a mild sesame oil-salt dip and a spicy sauce.

Kimchi jjaglee (a thick kimchi stew) also comes as a basic side — sweet and salty, perfect as a drinking snack 🍻 The kimchi inside was especially delicious, and it went great alongside the meat too.

Ordering both fresh pork belly and pork neck, grilled at your table
☑️ What we ordered: since this was our first visit and we were curious about the flavors, we ordered both fresh pork belly and fresh pork neck.

They grill everything for you, so you can just sit back. When you order meat, they grill their signature honey potato alongside it, and once it's done you wrap the meat with the potato and eat it together! I've always loved potatoes anyway, so no need to say more — sweet and nutty, it was delicious 🙄🥔 The nutty potato brought out even more savoriness when eaten with the meat.

The owner grills everything and also tells you which combinations taste best. Both the pork neck and pork belly were delicious, so it was hard to pick just one as the best.

The wrap combinations the owner recommends
One of the recommended combos was: potato wrap + kimchi jjaglee + basil + meat! Adding the fragrant scent of herb greens like basil and shepherd's purse really cut through the greasiness of the meat. This was the first BBQ place I'd been to that served herb-type greens, so it kept being fun the whole time, and it was delicious.
*Shepherd's purse has a slightly bitter taste, so it was best dipped generously in the spicy sauce.
