Gim Geumja Sutbul Galbi in Daeyeon-dong: no wait at 5pm on a weekday

I suddenly wanted charcoal-grilled meat, so I stopped by Gim Geumja Sutbul Galbi! I got there around 5pm and there was no waiting at all — walked right in. Even at 5pm on a weekday, other customers were already eating, which told me this place must be legit.

Hours are weekdays 4pm to 1am, and weekends 11:30am to 1am! Since they're open so late, it seems like a great spot for drinks and food haha. For parking, you can use the Nam-gu District Office lot, about a 4-minute walk away. I asked a staff member and they said that after 8pm, if you park outdoors at the district office lot, nobody checks and it's free — worth noting if you're visiting after 8.

Gim Geumja Sutbul Galbi set menu board with prices
The menus are the marinated galbi cheongyang cream udon set ₩38,900, spicy galbi cheongyang cream udon ₩40,900, and raw galbi galmaegi tonghangjeong set ₩49,900. With reasonably priced sets you don't have to overthink! I picked the cheongyang cream udon set with sweet marinated galbi and spicy udon that seemed perfect for wrapping with meat.

Besides the sets, there are plenty of grilled options to choose based on taste! A marinated-and-spicy galbi combo sounded delicious to try both. Single-serving add-ons are also available, including marinated galbi, spicy galbi, raw galbi, and hangjeongsal.

At Gim Geumja Sutbul Galbi Daeyeon Branch, the set menus are: marinated galbi cheongyang cream udon set ₩38,900, spicy galbi cheongyang cream udon ₩40,900, and raw galbi with galmaegi (skirt meat) and whole tonghangjeong (pork jowl) set ₩49,900. With reasonably priced sets you don't have to overthink, I picked the cheongyang cream udon set — sweet marinated galbi paired with a spicy cream udon that seemed perfect for wrapping with meat.

Besides the sets, there are also plenty of grilled options you can pick to your taste! A combo of marinated and spicy galbi — sweet-spicy-sweet-spicy — sounded delicious to try both. You can also add single servings, with marinated galbi and spicy galbi sold by the portion, plus raw galbi and hangjeongsal (pork jowl) available too.

If you leave a review, you can get honeycomb tripe (beoljip gyeopdae) or a drink — a lot of people were doing it! I got the drink, but at the table next to me I saw they got tripe along with a tool for pressing it flat, so it turns out crispy outside and chewy inside. Charcoal-grilled really is the real deal, right? Haha.

Menu board for cheongyang cream udon, doenjang jjigae and other meal items
For meals, there's the signature cheongyang cream udon, the restaurant's signature doenjang jjigae, doenjang sulbap, mul naengmyeon, bibim naengmyeon, and mukbap too... everything looked so good, ugh.

The ₩1,000 bone soup and rice dishes

For meals, there's the signature cheongyang cream udon, the restaurant's signature doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew), doenjang sulbap (rice with soybean paste), mul naengmyeon (cold noodle soup), bibim naengmyeon (spicy cold noodles), and mukbap (mung bean jelly soup)... everything looked so good, ugh.

This bone soup is the real winner, seriously haha. Everyone was ordering it, so I checked it out — the price alone is unbelievably cheap. The first bowl is ₩1,000, then ₩2,000, then ₩3,000, and even that is still a steal.

What is on the self-bar?

At Gim Geumja Sutbul Galbi's self-bar, there's onion, shredded scallion, garlic, ssamjang (dipping sauce), kimchi, perilla leaf, chili pepper, lettuce, pickled radish, and small plates, so you can help yourself to as much as you want. There's also a variety of sauces and wasabi, plus pepper, so you can customize things exactly to your taste and enjoy the meat at its best.

At first, the staff set everything up for us, and anything extra we needed we could just grab from the self-bar. They also gave us jjondeugi (chewy rice cake) and other little extras — the smell was already driving me crazy haha.

Tasting the ₩38,900 marinated galbi and cheongyang cream udon set

This is the meat that comes with the set, and the portion was bigger than I expected!! They also gave us potato and mushroom, so we threw those on the grill too. The meat was fresh and the marinade wasn't overly sweet — really tasty. It wasn't super fatty meat either, the ratio felt just right.

Ahh~ waiting for the meat to cook on the grill was tough because the smell was so good. Whenever we asked, they swapped in a fresh grill plate right away, which I really appreciated.

This is the cheongyang cream udon — can you see that color, ugh? It's moist, with just the right amount of spice to cut the richness, plus onion, mushroom, and bacon mixed in, and a moist but rich sauce — this alone is delicious enough to just eat by the spoonful.

Now imagine wrapping this spicy, savory cream udon in sweet, salty meat? This is heaven, seriously. It's great eaten that way, and they also give you two morning rolls — put in the meat, cream udon, and onion, and make a sandwich, and it becomes a whole different dish.

This is the ₩1,000 bone soup — can you believe it, ugh? It comes in a pot the size of a doenjang jjigae serving, with about 4 bones in it, a clean broth with a hint of pepper, and plenty of meat, so you just keep scooping it up haha. The broth was clean with no gamey smell at all, and genuinely delicious.

Why the meat on the bone is the highlight

Isn't the highlight of charcoal galbi the meat still clinging to the bone? Picking it up and gnawing at it is truly the best part.

Holding it with chopsticks to gnaw was awkward, so I held the bone with a tissue instead haha. I take meat seriously. I wanted to eat it that cleanly because the charcoal aroma was so strong and it was so delicious.
