Why we picked Handam Guksu for pork noodles in Aewol, Jeju

The pork noodle restaurant I picked for this Jeju trip was Handam Guksu, near Handam Beach in Aewol. It's the style with rich bone broth piled generously with Jeju pork, and my four-year-old ate it up happily — so I wanted to recommend it.

There's a dish you have to eat when you visit Jeju: gogigukssu (pork noodle soup)! Ten years ago, 'Jeju pork noodles' meant only a handful of long-running favorites, but these days there are all sorts of different styles of pork noodle restaurants. Just like Busan's pork rice soup comes in many styles, Jeju's pork noodles have gotten diverse too.

Near Handam Beach: a meal before the Aewol cafés

Handam Guksu sits over in Aewol, right by Handam Beach. I've been to the Aewol area of Jeju plenty of times, but I'd never heard of a beach called Handam Beach before. There's Randy's Donuts nearby too, along with some pretty cafés, so eating here and then heading to a café afterward works out nicely.

Does Handam Guksu have ocean views from inside?

This Jeju pork noodle spot has ocean-view seating looking out at Handam Beach. I've been to a lot of pork noodle restaurants, but this might be the first time I've seen one with such a pretty sea view!

The dongchimi bibim noodles come with dongchimi (watery radish kimchi) broth served separately. I tasted the broth first — refreshing, and the kind of taste that really clears your head! You pour it over the noodles and mix it in.

Pork mandu with a thin wrapper and plenty of filling

Handam Guksu's pork mandu (dumplings) have a very thin wrapper packed full of filling, and the seasoning is on the mild side, so even my four-year-old ate them well. I love exactly this style of mandu — and true to a great Aewol pork noodle restaurant, even the dumplings were delicious :)

What are the noodles like at Handam Guksu?

The standout feature of this Aewol pork noodle spot is the thin noodles!!! Every pork noodle place has its own noodle style, and Handam Guksu's noodles are thin yet soft, sliding right down.

The pork was thin and tender too, so even my kid, who's not great with chewy meat, ate it really well! The noodles slide down smooth and soft too, which makes Handam Guksu great to eat with a child!

How the dongchimi bibim noodles taste

I was curious about the dongchimi bibim noodles too, so we ordered them. Thanks to the dongchimi broth, they definitely had a refreshing, cooling taste — really good. Like the bone broth pork noodles, they're loaded with bean sprouts, which is a total hit for me since I love vegetables!! The bean sprouts even give it a bit of a jjolmyeon (chewy cold noodles) feel, but the noodles themselves are soft and thin, so they were easy to digest and my stomach felt comfortable afterward. The combo of the sweet-and-tangy sauce with the dongchimi broth is the best 💛

If you're looking for a Jeju Aewol pork noodle restaurant that's good to visit with kids, I fully recommend Handam Guksu!! There are baby chairs, kids' tableware, soft noodles, and broth that isn't too strong, so both adults and kids can enjoy it — Handam Guksu, the Jeju Aewol pork noodle place 💛 I'm planning to come back on my next Jeju trip!
