Hyeopjae Beach soup restaurant open at 8am: Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi

In short

Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi is a haejangguk (hangover soup) restaurant in Hallim-eup, Jeju, a two-minute walk from Hyeopjae Beach. A couple came at 8am to eat before swimming at high tide around 9am, ordering the spicy abalone soondubu (soft tofu stew) with a whole abalone and the Jeju bomal (sea snail) haejangguk, and parked free at the Hallim-eup lot behind the restaurant. For a filling breakfast before a morning swim, Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi hit the spot.

Main photo from the visit to Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi

My husband and I went to Jeju for our summer vacation this year. We mostly stayed around Aewol and Hallim on the west side of Jeju-si, snorkeling and swimming in the sea. While we were at Hyeopjae Beach, I discovered a local Jeju spot I want to share. It's about a 2-minute walk from Hyeopjae Beach — super close! Let me introduce Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi, a great find in the Aewol-Hallim area :)

Where is Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi? Two minutes from Hyeopjae Beach

Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi sits right in front of Hyeopjae Beach. So a lot of people who come to swim, as well as local Jeju residents, stop by here.

Breakfast at 8am, before the swim at high tide

We went to Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi at 8am, ahead of the high tide around 9am. Why so early? So we could eat a hearty meal before swimming :) There aren't many good restaurants open for breakfast, but Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi serves breakfast and is right by Hyeopjae Beach!

Parking at Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi

There's a large free parking lot run by Hallim-eup right behind the restaurant, so we used that. It made parking easy and worry-free.

Inside the restaurant and the self-serve banchan

The owner greeted us kindly as soon as we walked in :) And once inside, we saw local Jeju uncles already having breakfast — proof this is a real local spot?!!!!

At Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi you can also help yourself to extra banchan (side dishes). You might wonder why there's lettuce for wrapping when you're eating a stew — turns out they also serve black pork bulgogi :)

Since it was morning, we decided to stick with the stew menu, but next time we visit Hyeopjae Beach, I definitely want to try the black pork bulgogi too.

Can you bring kids to Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi?

There was a kids' haejangguk menu that children can eat, and a separate baby chair too. I'd definitely recommend Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi if you're looking for a place to take your kids!

How do the abalone soondubu and bomal haejangguk taste?

We ordered the spicy abalone soondubu (soft tofu stew) with a whole abalone inside, and the Jeju bomal (sea snail) haejangguk. It was perfect for a morning meal. But since both are hot dishes, I think they'd also be great for lunch after a swim.

Abalone soondubu with a whole abalone inside

The haejangguk came with a big whole abalone — I pulled it out and diligently cut it up with scissors :) I love soondubu jjigae and make it at home sometimes, but I'd never had it with abalone before. After trying it at Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi, I'm thinking of adding abalone next time I make it myself haha. Anyway, the abalone soondubu jjigae at Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi was really delicious.

A bowl of Jeju bomal haejangguk

My husband said the bomal haejangguk was so refreshing and delicious too. The dongchimi (radish water kimchi) broth and the miyeok (seaweed) stems were great, and above all, thank you to the kind owner :) hahaha

Why Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi suits Hyeopjae Beach travellers

If you're vacationing around Hallim and Aewol in Jeju, you'll definitely stop by the emerald waters of Hyeopjae Beach. I don't usually eat breakfast, but I went for a hearty meal before swimming anyway. I ate so well, rubbing my sleepy eyes, that it was totally worth it!

When you travel to Jeju, you'll probably drink a fair bit — and don't you need a bowl of haejangguk (hangover soup) in the morning? Coming to Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi for a hangover-curing breakfast would be great. They've got plenty of dishes good for that: abalone soondubu, abalone pollock soup, bomal haejangguk, and more haha. Fancy a bowl at Hyeopjae On Ttukbaegi for breakfast or lunch?~
