Jeju Dongmun Market snack shop: 5 oranda and 4 gwajul flavors for mom

In short

Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch Tapdong is a snack shop inside Dongmun Market in Jeju City that makes oranda (Jeju-style puffed rice candy bars) and gwajul (fried rice crackers) on the spot. Looking for a gift for her mom, the writer packed yuzu, garlic, nut, gamtae seaweed and Udo peanut oranda along with 10 pieces of gwajul in white rice, brown rice, buckwheat and steamed rice, and found the oranda coated so thinly in rice syrup that it stayed soft and chewy rather than hard. Cheongchuni Oranda is a good Jeju souvenir for anyone put off by old-style rock-hard oranda.

Jeju oranda packed up at Cheongchuni Oranda

There was one place in Jeju I'd been meaning to visit for a while. I stumbled across a neighbor's blog post, drooled over the oranda photos, and thought 'I have to go here next time I'm in Jeju' haha. This time I stopped by Dongmun Market to pick up a snack for my mom and remembered this place, so I finally went.

I think a lot of people traveling in Jeju look for Dongmun Market souvenirs to bring back for parents or friends, so this time I picked something simple to eat.

How to find Cheongchuni Oranda inside Jeju's Dongmun Market

Cheongchuni Oranda is inside Jeju's Dongmun Market. I looked for it inside the market, and there was quite a long line of people.

There were so many people that I could tell from far away 'ah, this must be the place' — so it was actually easy to find haha.

Customers lined up at the Cheongchuni Oranda counter

When I visited, they were continuously making oranda and gwajul, and packing them right there on the spot, so I got to take home fresh, still-warm product.

Is Cheongchuni Oranda's oranda hard or soft?

Cheongchuni's oranda felt like it had a thin coating of jocheong (Korean grain syrup), so instead of being hard, it was soft and chewy. There were several kinds too, so it was fun to pick one of each.

I actually like oranda in general, but the one thing that always held me back was that the really hard kind is tough to eat comfortably. You know that feeling like you might scrape the roof of your mouth... haha. But Cheongchuni's texture was quite different from the typical old-style oranda I had in mind.

When I bit into it, it wasn't uncomfortably hard and didn't stick badly to my teeth either, which I liked. So if you like oranda but have hesitated because it's usually too hard, I think this one is worth trying.

The set sizes were a little different depending on the flavor.

  • Yuzu / garlic (marong) / nut oranda → 3 pieces for ₩10,000
  • Gamtae (seaweed) / Udo peanut oranda → 2 pieces for ₩10,000

I picked several different flavors, and since there was a good variety, I could choose according to what I liked.

Adding gwajul rice crackers to the gift box

Packaged white rice, brown rice, buckwheat, and steamed rice gwajul

I only meant to buy oranda, but I spotted gwajul too, so I packed some of that as well. Gwajul came in 4 flavors — white rice, brown rice, buckwheat, and steamed rice — 10 pieces for ₩10,000.

The outside is coated in puffed rice and jocheong syrup, while the inside is crunchy with a slightly crumbly texture. If oranda is soft and chewy, gwajul is definitely more on the crispy side!

Oranda and gwajul packed together

So eating oranda and gwajul together was even more fun because of the contrast in texture. It's great for a simple snack while wandering around Dongmun Market, and since the packaging is neat too, it also works well as a Jeju snack or a gift for parents or friends.

Best of all, you get to watch them being made fresh right in front of you, which makes it feel like a slightly special find for anyone looking for a Dongmun Market souvenir.

Tasting yuzu, nut, garlic and gamtae oranda one by one

It was fun to try each one. Personally I liked the yuzu for its subtle fragrance, and the nut oranda was tasty and nutty too.

There were also more distinctive flavors like garlic and gamtae, so mixing several kinds together would make a nice Dongmun Market gift set. And this was supposed to be for my mom... but I ended up tasting one after another myself and couldn't stop haha.

Is Cheongchuni Oranda worth it as a Jeju gift for mom?

If you're like me — you like oranda but have shied away because of the hard texture — Cheongchuni Oranda is softer and chewier than you'd expect, so it's worth a try. I found this place while looking for a snack or gift inside Dongmun Market, and it left a real impression because it was genuinely tasty.

If you're searching for Jeju Dongmun Market food and want something to snack on or pack up besides a full meal, give Cheongchuni Oranda a visit :) I bought it for my mom, but ended up eating more of it myself — not telling her that part... 😂
