In short

Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch is a Korean braised-fish restaurant on Hallim-ro, across from Hyeopjae Beach in Jeju. On a trip around western Jeju, the Jeju garlic mixed stew for two came to 30,000 won and brought hairtail and mackerel together in one pot, with extra banchan (side dishes) free to take from the self-serve bar. With no set menu required, stew alone starts at 15,000 won per person, making Onjeong Jorim an easy, affordable Korean meal near the beach.

Lunch near Hyeopjae Beach at Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch

Traveling around western Jeju, I was looking for somewhere to have lunch near Hyeopjae Beach and ended up visiting Onjeong Jorim Jeju Hyeopjae Branch (온정조림 제주협재점).

The Hyeopjae area has so many hairtail stew restaurants that it's hard to decide where to go, but this time I found a place that felt properly Jeju-style without breaking the bank.

Where is Onjeong Jorim, and what are the hours and parking?

  • Hours: 09:00–20:00 (closed Mondays)
  • Parking: available

There's space around the restaurant to park, and it's also easy to use the public parking lot across the street by Hyeopjae Beach.

Walking in, the place felt clean and comfortable overall. The tables weren't cramped together, so it worked fine for two of us, and it seemed like a good fit for families too.

By the window, you could catch the mood of the Hyeopjae sea, which was a nice way to feel like you're really on a Jeju trip while eating.

Jeju garlic hairtail stew is ₩15,000 per person (minimum order of two).

Usually when you order hairtail stew in Jeju, it comes as a set with several side dishes bundled in, but here you can eat just the stew starting from ₩30,000 for two, which keeps things affordable.

Aside from the Norwegian mackerel, the hairtail and pork are both from Jeju!

Handy for travellers: aprons, phone charging, self-serve banchan bar

True to a menu with red sauce, they had aprons ready, and phone charging was available for travelers too. There's a restroom inside, and there's a Naver review event running for a free Hallabong juice, so keep that in mind.

Jeju garlic mixed stew for two: hairtail and mackerel in one pot

The Jeju garlic mixed stew is ₩15,000 per person (hairtail + mackerel).

'Manong' is Jeju dialect for garlic, and here Jeju garlic is added on top of the hairtail stew, giving it a slightly different feel from a regular hairtail stew. If you're hunting for a Hallim hairtail stew spot while caring about price, this is a pretty reasonable combination.

You can't order one person of hairtail and one person of mackerel separately, but if you order the mixed version for two, you get to try both hairtail and mackerel :)

Jeju garlic mixed stew with hairtail and mackerel together

The mixed stew was generously loaded with hairtail and mackerel, plenty for two people! The fish flesh went well with rice, and the sauce was the kind of style that's great spooned over rice.

What matters most in mackerel stew is the balance between sauce and fish, and eaten with rice it wasn't overwhelming at all, which suited it well as a lunch dish.

Eating it with dried seaweed made the sea flavor come through even more🌊

Mackerel stew served with sauce and radish

In particular, eating the mackerel together with the sauce and radish rather than on its own made for a great combination.

The hairtail flesh separated easily from the bones, and since the meat was so plump, deboning it didn't feel like a chore — it was just tasty to eat.

Is Onjeong Jorim worth it near Hyeopjae Beach?

If you've wanted to eat hairtail stew in Jeju but hesitated because of the price, Onjeong Jorim, where you can start from ₩15,000 per person, was a solid option.

Being close to Hyeopjae Beach made it easy to combine a sea view with a meal, and what I liked most was being able to enjoy a clean Korean meal at a price that didn't feel like a burden.

If your itinerary includes a hunt for hairtail stew near Hyeopjae Beach, this is worth adding as a good-value option in Jeju. It's especially well-positioned for a hearty midway meal on a Hyeopjae date lunch, or when you're on the lookout for a Hallim hairtail stew spot — I'd recommend it as a place to eat on a western Jeju trip!
