Jeju Dongmun Market snack shop: in-law gift oranda, yuzu and nut

In short

Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch Tapdong is a snack shop in front of Gate 8-1 at Jeju Dongmun Market that makes yuzu gwajul (fried rice sweets) and handmade oranda (puffed rice bars) fresh each day. After tasting samples that were soft yet crisp, the writer bought two bulk 550g bags at Cheongchuni Oranda — yuzu for 10,000 won and nut for 12,000 won — and gave one to each set of parents. The garlic flavor was sold out, but the bulk bags proved an affordable, well-received gift from Jeju Dongmun Market.

While exploring Jeju Dongmun Market on this trip, I got a free taste at Cheongchuni Oranda, and it was so soft yet crisp and delicious that I bought a bag for each side of the family — my in-laws and my own parents!

Where is Cheongchuni Oranda in Jeju Dongmun Market, and which gate?

Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch is closest to Gate 8-1 of Jeju Dongmun Market, and also just a short walk from Gates 2 and 9. Even though I come to Jeju often, this was actually my first time at Dongmun Market — compared to Seogwipo Olle Market, it felt noticeably bigger.

If you're looking for a Jeju Dongmun Market gift, this is the spot!

Yuzu gwajul on display and free samples: a good gift for older relatives?

In front of the Cheongchuni Oranda shop was a display of yuzu gwajul (fried rice sweet), one of Jeju's signature treats. The round-shaped gwajul is sold in bags, while the gift version is cut into squares.

You could taste the Jeju gwajul by type — steamed rice, white rice, brown rice, and buckwheat — which was nice since sampling was totally free and easy. Everything here is made and sold the same day, and for me, the white rice and buckwheat flavors were the tastiest. But do keep in mind that these can be a bit chewy/sticky, so if you're gifting to someone with weaker teeth, it's worth considering.

Square oranda, 3 for 10,000 won, plus oranda donuts

Next to the gwajul were the Jeju oranda — square-shaped oranda sold 3 for ₩10,000, in four flavors: yuzu, Udo peanut, gamtae (seaweed) and nut, and garlic. You can mix and match any combination you like, and gift sets are also available. They also sell oranda donuts topped with delicious toppings like chocolate, black sesame, and green tea — don't they look pretty?

Of course, the Dongmun Market oranda also had samples out — when we visited, it was the large bulk-bag yuzu and nut flavors. I expected them to be hard or sticky, but they turned out crisp yet soft — just right. On top of that, since they use jocheong (rice syrup) and starch syrup instead of sugar, they weren't too sweet, and the fresh yuzu scent combined with the nutty flavor was wonderful. My mom, who came along, loved it so much that we decided on the spot to buy some as a Jeju Dongmun Market gift.

What I bought: two bulk 550g bags of yuzu and nut oranda

After tasting Cheongchuni Oranda's products myself, I decided to go with the bulk bags instead of a gift set since they were so good. The deep wine-colored logo bag is the nut flavor, and the blue one is yuzu! (I was curious about the garlic flavor, but it was sold out — so sad!)

What yuzu oranda tastes like

First, the yuzu oranda was sweet with a really refreshing yuzu scent — the combination of sweetness and tang was the best. Maybe because of the yuzu's tartness, it never got tiring, and it just kept getting better. Most of all, it wasn't hard at all — soft and crisp, with a healthy kind of sweetness unlike store-bought snacks, so once you take a bite, you can't stop.

What nut oranda tastes like

The nut oranda has black sesame and pumpkin seeds in it, giving it a nutty, savory taste quite different from the yuzu one. Maybe because of the nuts, it felt less sweet, and the chewy oranda texture combined with the nut crunch — my parents really enjoyed it, which made me happy!
