Jeju café for freezer-ready omegi-tteok: Suragan Tteokbang

When you travel around Jeju, time seems to fly by. You eat delicious things, look around here and there, and suddenly it is almost time to go home. But it feels a little sad to leave Jeju empty-handed, right? Haha. I decided to bring home a Jeju-style snack that I could keep in the freezer and take out one at a time. That is how I ended up stopping by Suragan Tteokbang (수라간떡방) on the way back. Omegi-tteok, a Jeju essential! This time, I packed up several different flavors. It felt even nicer, like a little Jeju gift to pick up at the end of the trip.

Where Suragan Tteokbang is and when to stop by

Located at 41 Noyeon-ro in Nohyeong-dong, Jeju-si, Suragan Tteokbang is in a convenient spot to visit before heading to Jeju Airport.

It really is a good place to stop at the end of a trip, pack up some rice cakes, and bring them home. It is open daily from 08:00 to 18:30.

The large Suragan Tteokbang sign is impossible to miss from afar, with white and red lettering on black, so it was easy to spot while passing by. One side of the sign says they carry many kinds of rice cakes, including rice-cake cakes, first-birthday rice cakes, thank-you gift rice cakes, feast rice cakes, formal gift rice cakes, and opening-day rice cakes. What caught my eye most was the note saying nationwide delivery is available. It seems plenty of people choose the rice cakes they want in Jeju and send them home, haha.

What about parking?

Parking is something to keep in mind. There is not a large dedicated lot; there is only enough space to stop briefly in front of the shop, so it would be difficult for several cars to park at once. You should be able to pull up briefly and pick up a package. If, like Ella, you are just quickly picking something up on the way home, ordering ahead before visiting could be a good idea.

Ella visited around closing time, so many rice cakes had already sold out, but there were still so many varieties inside. There were more kinds than Ella expected, so I ended up looking around for a moment first.

Choosing Suragan Tteokbang omegi-tteok in different flavors

Omegi-tteok was not available in just one flavor. There were several colors and flavors to choose from according to your taste, including red bean, black sesame, soybean powder, nuts, tangerine, and barley.

Because the rice cakes are individually wrapped, they were convenient to bring home and take out one at a time. Mixing several flavors into one box also kept everything neat.

Can you receive them by delivery?

If bringing them all the way home feels burdensome, delivery is another option. According to the shop notice in the photo, the listed delivery-included prices cover ice packs and dry ice.

If carrying rice cakes around during your trip feels inconvenient, sending them by delivery would be a good option too.

This time, Ella decided to take them herself instead of having them delivered, haha. I chose a 20-piece box of omegi-tteok. Rather than choosing only one or two flavors, picking several kinds makes it fun to take them out and eat one at a time at home, right? Haha. Since I was on my way back from a Jeju trip, I planned to put them straight into the freezer as soon as I got home. The 20-piece pack was ₩22,000, and I loved being able to choose the varieties I wanted from the different omegi-tteok. On a trip, you tend to pick up only what you will eat right away, but freezing these means you can take one out whenever you think of it, so they were a nice Jeju snack to bring home.

Isn't the omegi-tteok package I brought from Jeju so pretty? On the way home after finishing the Jeju trip, it felt too nice to simply load it into the car, so I took it out for a quick photo when the sunset was settling in beautifully. A Jeju stone wall, a dolhareubang stone grandfather statue, and a box of omegi-tteok in my hand. It felt like taking home one more Jeju-like scene, right through the final moments of the trip.

The packaging is so neat and pretty too :) I planned to put it straight into the freezer once I got home. I ate lots of delicious things while traveling in Jeju, but if you bring home a snack like this too, it feels like Jeju will come to mind every now and then even after the trip ends.

Opening the 20-piece box at home: four flavors

When I opened the box at home, it was filled with colorful omegi-tteok. You can feel that these are rice cakes bought in Jeju just from the packaging! Ella chose 20 pieces in tangerine, soybean powder, nut, black sesame, and red bean flavors. Each one was individually wrapped, which made it easy to take out only as much as I wanted to eat and keep the rest neatly in the freezer. Most of all, I liked that each wrapper had the Suragan Tteokbang logo printed on it.

Trying one of each flavor

When I put one of each on a plate, the colors were so varied, right? From black sesame omegi-tteok to tangerine-tinted pieces, rice cakes generously coated in savory nuts, ones dusted with soybean powder, and ones topped with individual red beans. They are all the same omegi-tteok, but the appearance and taste vary a little depending on what is on the outside, making it fun to choose one at a time. The nut-coated omegi-tteok especially caught Ella's eye. It had a generous coating of savory nuts, so the texture was fun to chew too.

When I cut one in half, it looked completely different from the outside. You can see the red bean filling between the chewy green rice cake, and the colors were really pretty. The rice cake itself was soft and chewy, and the red bean in the middle went well with the mild rice cake and sweet filling. One bite feels like the taste of the trip, which I had in Jeju, continuing at home too, haha.

How to store omegi-tteok in the freezer

Once you get home, it is best not to leave them in the packaging but freeze them right away. The Suragan Tteokbang notice had a few storage precautions.

• Remove the rice cakes from the box; do not put them in an airtight container, but spread them out widely and freeze them.
• Store them in the freezer, not the refrigerator or kimchi refrigerator.
• Microwave frozen omegi-tteok for about 20–30 seconds before eating.
• Microwaves vary, so adjust the time while checking the condition.
• For delivered products, check the enclosed storage and thawing instructions.

The notice says that very thin, thread-like strands may occasionally appear in chewy rice cake, and that this is a natural phenomenon. As soon as Ella got home, I took out only what I would eat and popped the rest into the freezer! The Jeju trip may be over, but thanks to the omegi-tteok left in the freezer, I will be able to take out a little bit of Jeju at home for a while, haha. On a day when it feels sad to leave Jeju just like that, omegi-tteok was a good choice if you want to bring home the taste of the trip too. You can choose the assortment, and the individual wrapping makes it easy to freeze and eat one at a time—so good!!
