I stopped by Ryusenso Beomeo Branch, a Beomeo-dong restaurant that's great when you're craving rich tonkotsu ramen in Daegu. It's near Beomeo Station, so it was easy to find, and I parked at the nearby Beomeo public parking lot and walked over.

Inside Ryusenso Beomeo Branch: atmosphere and seating

The exterior already had the feel of a Japanese ramen shop, and stepping inside, that distinctly Japanese restaurant atmosphere really came through.

Dining hall at Ryusenso Beomeo Branch with wood-tone seating

There were more seats than I expected, and the wood tones gave it a warm, cozy feel. With that many seats, it seemed good for groups as well as solo diners — a nice Beomeo-dong restaurant either way.

Basic tonkotsu ramen: is the pork broth free of any gamey smell?

A bowl of basic Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen

Ryusenso is a place where you can taste rich, smooth Fukuoka Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen made from pork bones simmered for a long time! One sip of the broth and it was so deeply savory yet smooth that I really wanted to mix in rice, haha — it was hard to hold back 🥹💛🥹💛

Close-up of the rich tonkotsu broth
Tonkotsu ramen topped with chashu and soft-boiled egg

The ramen came with broth and noodles topped with scallions, wood ear mushrooms, thick-cut chashu (braised pork), and a soft-boiled egg. I'm pretty sensitive to gamey smells, but Ryusenso's ramen had absolutely none of that meaty broth smell, so I ate it happily!!

Noodles lifted up along with wood ear mushrooms

The noodles were cooked just right with great texture, and the chewy wood ear mushrooms added to that even more. I really want to know how they make Japanese-style eggs — why are ramen shop soft-boiled eggs always this good.

Ryusenso Kara: how to add minced garlic and pepper to the spicy ramen

The spicy Ryusenso Kara ramen

Ryusenso Kara is a Hakata-style tonkotsu ramen with spiciness added. Simply put, it's the basic tonkotsu ramen with a spicy kick.

How I recommend eating it: I added two spoonfuls of minced garlic and stirred in some pepper, and the broth — already rich and savory — got even deeper in flavor with the garlic and pepper mixed in. The signature richness of tonkotsu was still there, but with the spiciness added, it wasn't greasy at all.

Noodles and chashu in the sharpened spicy tonkotsu ramen

The basic broth was already good, but adding minced garlic and pepper definitely made it sharper and deeper. The noodles paired well with the broth, and having the thick chashu and soft-boiled egg alongside made for a hearty meal.

Karaage (Japanese fried chicken) ordered on the side

A plate of karaage served with sauce

It felt like it'd be a shame to just have ramen, so we ordered karaage too, and it came out hot and crispy like it was just fried — impossible not to love. The outside was super crunchy, the inside was juicy, and it paired well with the sauce that came with it. Eating the ramen and karaage together made for a pretty filling meal.

Is Ryusenso Beomeo Branch worth a visit in Daegu?

For anyone who loves rich tonkotsu ramen, Ryusenso Beomeo Branch is a Beomeo-dong restaurant worth a visit. If you prefer a spicier, sharper ramen over a heavier tonkotsu, I'd especially recommend trying the Ryusenso Kara with minced garlic and pepper added. It's a great Beomeo-dong restaurant to visit whenever you're near Beomeo Station looking for Japanese-style ramen or craving a rich tonkotsu broth :)
