Yeosu café with a 9,500-won mugwort ice cream set: Jwasuyeong

When you travel to Yeosu, there are a few spots you find yourself humming your way toward like they're part of a set course, right? The Yi Sun-sin Square area especially has restaurants packed so tightly together that your feet just naturally wander there.

This time I visited a place right across from Jinnamgwan, so it's super easy to find even if it's your first time in the area — Jwasuyeong Baguette Burger (좌수영바게트버거). It's been a famous Yeosu landmark for a long time, so I went back for old times' sake, and it didn't disappoint at all!

Stepping inside the store,

the hall seating is pretty spacious and comfortable, so it's not just takeout only — it's also great for eating in and relaxing.

That said, the one menu item per person rule strictly applies when dining in, so it's worth keeping in mind before you visit. Also, in one corner of the store, a high chair is thoughtfully provided so visitors with kids can stay comfortably too.

After ordering, I took a quick look around the store,

and there were detailed tips posted all over the store on how to enjoy the baguette burgers and chubby macarons even more, plus kind storage instructions — reading them while waiting for the food was fun in itself.

This time I picked the hearty baguette burger and fragrant mugwort ice cream set, plus threw in the chubby macarons I'd never tried before, for a nice full spread.

Geomundo sea-wind mugwort ice cream: sweet, not bitter

The first thing I tried was the famous mugwort ice cream! The rich, fragrant flavor of Geomundo sea-wind mugwort spread all through my mouth, and it was so incredibly smooth that I let out a little gasp with the very first bite.

It wasn't just bitter mugwort flavor — there was a pleasant sweetness in perfect balance, the kind everyone likes, so it'd win over kids and adults alike, no matter your taste.

My nephew loved this ice cream so much he basically scooped up the whole thing by himself, haha. It's wild to think he's grown enough now to finish a whole cup on his own!

The ice cream alone is refreshingly sweet and delicious, but tearing off a piece of the baguette bread that comes with it and dipping it into the ice cream is a surprisingly great combo too — definitely try eating it that way.

The baguette burger you hold whole, with cheongyang chili as the kick

Next up was one of today's stars — the baguette burger! Jwasuyeong Baguette Burger doesn't cut it in-store or provide a knife, to keep its shape intact, so you have to pick it up whole and take a hearty bite to really taste it properly.

The outside of the baguette is crispy enough to crackle, but oddly enough, the inside isn't tough at all — it's moist and soft, and the texture is honestly a work of art. The bread is hollowed out and packed full of tasty salad, ground meat, and fresh vegetables, and the first bite made my eyebrows furrow with genuine delight. The finely chopped cheongyang chili scattered throughout adds a sharp, spicy kick that keeps things from getting too rich, so you end up finishing it cleanly to the very last bite without getting sick of it. Totally addictive!

How to reheat a leftover baguette burger at home

If you take it to go or can't finish it the same day, refrigerate it, then pan-fry both sides without oil until golden, or heat it in an air fryer at 180°C (356°F) for 3-4 minutes to get that crispy texture back just like the first bite. Just don't ever microwave it — that makes the bread soggy and ruins the flavor!

The 5 chubby macaron flavors and how to store them

Now, for the final dessert I chose — the box of chubby macarons (뚱카롱).

It comes with 5 varied flavors: in order, strawberry milk, sea-wind mugwort real, sea-wind mugwort latte, sea-wind mugwort choco chip, and cookies and cream. Mugwort is such a signature Yeosu ingredient, right? Getting to pick from so many mugwort-based desserts in one box makes it a fun choice for a Yeosu travel souvenir or snack.

They say chubby macarons taste best if you keep them in the fridge and take them out to sit at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before eating.

Eating them cold straight from the fridge was really chewy and delicious too.

The shells were properly chewy and dense, and the cream was chewy yet cool, almost like eating a high-end ice cream dessert. Thanks to the thick filling, they were also great paired with coffee.

They pack them very carefully in an insulated bag too, so I'd definitely recommend them as gifts or souvenirs for friends and family. They keep for 2-3 days refrigerated, or up to a full month frozen, so you can stock up and enjoy them one at a time.

It's the perfect must-stop spot to load up your hands with treats on the way back from a satisfying trip to Yeosu!
