Jeonpo café street dessert stop for a slush-iced Hippy latte: Hippy

In short

Hippy is a dessert-focused café in an alley off the Jeonpo café street in Busanjin, Busan. At Hippy we ordered the slush-iced Hippy latte and the sweet corn cream pie (찰옥수수 톡톡), cutting the corn down one side at a time to eat with the base, while the refrigerated showcase stayed packed with seasonal desserts like fig. Hippy is a good pick in Jeonpo on a day when dessert, not coffee, is the point.

Why we picked Hippy on Jeonpo café street

The most famous café street in Busan is Jeonpo. Among the countless cafés there, I stopped by the Jeonpo branch of Hippy this time. Jeonpo has gotten so popular now that it's full of all kinds of businesses — experience spaces, restaurants, you name it — not just cafés, but originally it was the Jeonpo café street that made the area famous. At some point Jeonpo got really hot, and thanks to that even more cafés opened up.

For us, dessert matters more than coffee at a café, so while looking for a place with good dessert, we landed on Hippy. Isn't the entrance pretty? It felt like a space that really captures what a Jeonpo café is about. From the entrance alone, it looked like a great spot to stop by on a date.

Instead of the usual mass-produced cakes you see at most cafés, this place has a lot of distinctive desserts that catch your eye. Inside, the refrigerated case had a huge variety of pretty desserts lined up. Of course it'd be great to try them all, but since we'd already eaten, we picked just the one that looked most delicious.

Inside Hippy and ordering the slush-iced Hippy latte

The inside of Hippy has an overall warm, cozy atmosphere. It's a space that really carries that sentimental Jeonpo café feel. The tables and chairs are wood-toned, which matched the interior well. The lighting scattered around was pretty too.

I first ordered a regular americano but switched once the hippy latte looked good. Slush ice plus something like 'Deowisanyang' iced coffee candy — it felt right up my alley, so I picked it, and it tasted exactly as expected, which I loved. Next time I should try the matcha version too. I actually like matcha, but I only looked at the top of the menu and ordered right away.

There are non-coffee drinks and teas too. I don't drink coffee that often myself, so I always end up scanning for decaf options, lattes, or teas whenever I go somewhere, and there were plenty of tea options here too.

The hippy latte looked great too. While drinking it, I stirred well so the slush ice would come through with each sip. You get that distinctive sweetness that nicely balances out the coffee. It tasted like the kind of coffee you could drink down in one go.

What's in Hippy's dessert showcase

Hippy's desserts were so plentiful it was hard to choose. Everything looked so good that after a lot of deliberating, we went with the one topped with corn, since my partner loves corn.

I heard fig is in season these days, and the fig-topped dessert looked delicious too. Beyond fig, there were so many other kinds on display, right? The visuals were genuinely great — it reminded me of a bakery I saw once while traveling in France, that same beautifully made look. Since it's not just standard cake but a whole range of different desserts, choosing is tough, but that's exactly why it's so good.

How to eat Hippy's sweet corn cream pie

Out of all the desserts, the one chosen was Hippy's sweet corn cream pie (찰옥수수 톡톡). Three sides are covered in corn, so it's built to let you eat plenty of corn.

The corn piled on top is a whole side of corn kernels sliced off and laid on, so it cuts easily with a fork or knife. The sweet, savory cream underneath pairs really well with the corn on top. When cutting it, we brought each side of corn down one at a time, sliced through the base underneath with a knife, cut the corn too, and ate them together — that way you get the corn flavor and the base's texture at once.

It went really well with the americano, so having them together was great. If you search cafés in Jeonpo, you'll see coffee getting a lot of emphasis from back when it was known as a 'coffee street,' but Hippy's coffee side was nice because the amount of dessert relative to the café's size was really impressive. It had about as many desserts as those massive bakery cafés out on the outskirts of town. Choosing definitely isn't easy, but if you like bread and desserts, you'll get to eat quite a bit here.

Who will like Hippy in Jeonpo

We went in for just a cup of coffee, but Hippy ended up being fun just for browsing all the desserts. The corn-topped sweet corn cream pie has a look you don't really see elsewhere, so if you visit, definitely give it a try. The group sitting right next to us was eating the exact same combo too — hippy latte plus sweet corn cream pie.

If you're looking for a different kind of dessert café in Jeonpo, I'd recommend this one. The owner was kind, and the seating was spaced far enough apart to make it comfortable to use.
