Seoul smash burger restaurant in Seongsu: corn ribs at Bored & Hungry

From Withburn to Bored & Hungry Seongsu: what changed?

Bored & Hungry Seongsu is a smash burger place that relocated a bit closer to Seongsu Station from its old spot as Withburn. Seongsu has countless burger joints that open and close on repeat, and Withburn — a place I sort of knew, not close friends exactly, haha — got acquired (or merged, or whatever you'd call it) by the US-born brand Bored & Hungry after the 2023 Korea Burger Championship.

The 2023 Korea Burger Championship brought together the era's hottest smash burger names: Bored & Hungry, Withburn, Daily Fit, Burnout and more. Of the Seongsu crowd back then — Burnout, Withburn, Burger Boy — pretty much all of them have closed or moved, and only Withburn → Bored & Hungry survives here haha. They were straight-up promoting it as a burger festival.

That was a good-weather day for both Withburn and Bored & Hungry. Now they feel like basically the same company, though it seems the original Withburn owner still runs the Seongsu location. What stuck with me was that Bored & Hungry brought in a foreign chef to grill the patties — memorable, haha.

Withburn, with its striking yellow signage, became the Bored & Hungry brand at some point and moved closer to Seongsu Station from its old location. The distinctive mural is a real signature — at the old spot the whole building was covered in that artwork so you could spot it from a distance; at the new location the same artwork sits near the entrance, an instant "ah, this is Bored & Hungry!" moment.

The entrance is genuinely cute. Follow the mural inward and you land right in Bored & Hungry, one of Seongsu's go-to smash burger spots — the hip vibe hits immediately.

A place that grabs your eye from the entrance

A Catch Table waiting kiosk by the door — kind of the mark of a proper local favorite, haha. It was raining the day I went so there wasn't a line, but on a normal lunch hour there's usually a decent wait even with a spacious dining room. The entrance colors — blue, yellow, that distinct palette — genuinely catch the eye, almost gives off Samsung Lions vibes.

Off to one side of the entrance, the burger lineup is posted — cheese burger, shrimp burger, shakes, beer. The smash patty — flattened hard on the grill — is clearly the headline act here.

A colorful, eye-catching interior

Looking back at the entrance from inside — on the right, baby chairs for families and a waiting bench that doubles as a spot to hold delivery orders. On the left,

clothing with an A Bathing Ape kind of feel — there's actually BAPE gear on display.

They even sell phone grip charms, which is cute — though the price is a bit steep...

Namjimreut, the Thai restaurant in Seongsu, seems to run a lot of Pepsi tie-in ads too — here the owner is apparently putting his own spin on "the taste of Pepsi," which is a nice touch.

There's even a convex mirror set up, giving it a bit of a gallery feel — and it seems like a great spot to wait out a line in the AC. On the right, baby chairs and a waiting bench that also holds delivery orders, plus the kitchen and restrooms.

The restrooms are inside and split by gender, which keeps things tidy. On the right is the open kitchen, visible from the self-serve bar as you pass by, which builds trust — white tile, not a speck of grease, impressively clean, haha.

Who painted the mural at Bored & Hungry Seongsu?

Tell me where is your favorite burger brand

That mural that's always been front and center actually has a title — it's called "Bored & Hungry," the same as the brand name, haha. It's the work of visual artist Regina Kim and artist Lee Moo-woong (이무웅).

Regina Kim, one of Korea's leading visual artists, built the piece around BAYC and MAYC's various ape characters making a journey to find Bored & Hungry, riding waves of love and enjoying burgers along the way. Lee Moo-woong, a fine artist known for completing numerous large-scale murals, painted the Bored & Hungry artwork across 250 square meters of wall, using around 100 colors over nine days. Eighteen different ape characters were born onto the wall by his hand.

That's genuinely impressive. Nine days??????????????? Wild.

Seating for solo diners, dates and lunch with coworkers

The tables in the back are spaced generously — two-tops good for a Seongsu date, and four-tops for family meals out.

There are even single seats for a quick solo meal. From solo dining to pushing tables together for a lunch get-together, this spacious Seongsu burger spot doubles as a Seongsu date spot — hashtag-worthy, haha.

Plenty of seats for solo diners and two-tops, and with a room this big I wondered how they'd handle orders — turns out you order via QR at the table, and the kitchen checks it and sends the food out.

Even the ceiling lighting has a bit of a Supreme-store feel. Between the music and the lighting, the whole place has a hip vibe — close your eyes, listen to the music, and with only English text in view it's basically California-cafe magic. The hip-hop soundtrack has everyone bobbing along even at lunchtime.

What's on the self-serve bar

A self-serve bar built exactly around what customers actually need

By the kitchen there are nitrile gloves and steel plates for anyone eating with their hands, plus forks and knives for customers cutting food up for kids. Hot sauce, ketchup, wet wipes — pretty much everything is at the self-serve bar, so there's basically no need to flag down a server. Smart.

I was surprised you could pump out ketchup in bulk like this. Usually people pump a couple of squirts into a little steel dish and end up wasting most of it — this setup avoids that. And you can just pour your own water too. Impressive.

Honestly more convenient than stocking cans in a fridge — a proper soda machine you can refill freely, as many times as you like. This kind of generosity might be the real mark of a genuine Seongsu Western-food favorite. As they say, generosity flows from a full storeroom, haha.

Zooming right in on the menu: Original Burger ₩11,900, Cheese Burger ₩8,900–₩15,900, Bacon Deluxe Burger ₩11,900, Shrimp Burger ₩12,400, fries ₩4,000, corn ribs ₩7,400, vanilla shake ₩6,400, draft beer ₩5,500. A burger running over 10 dollars might raise an eyebrow, but that's not really this place being pricey — it's just that prices keep climbing everywhere these days, sigh.

At Bored & Hungry, you sit down, tap NFC or scan the QR code with your camera, and the full menu pops up. Honestly this beats a table kiosk — it doesn't take up any table space, and since you have to complete payment before the order reaches the kitchen, there's no risk of prank orders coming in from outside.

Okay, no more stalling, let's order — Bacon Deluxe Burger, draft Budweiser, seasoned fries, Peanut Bacon Cheese Burger. That's the order.

A server pours the draft beer fresh from inside, and any office worker will tell you a sneaky lunchtime beer tastes borderline illegal, haha.

Soft drinks arrive first as a stainless cup filled with ice, and you go grab whatever you want from the machine — mix Coke and Sprite, add Fanta, whatever, haha.

How the bacon deluxe and peanut bacon cheese burgers taste

Finally — my dopamine has arrived

It doesn't just pass the visual test, it skips a grade, haha. I'd had Withburn's burgers a few times years back, and tried Bored & Hungry at the Korea Burger Championship, but this was my first time eating the finished product as a full restaurant meal. Taking it piece by piece —

A lot of money clearly went into this. Custom-printed burger liners, wraps, stainless cups and plates all carry the logo — the whole concept seems to be "bored, hungry apes eat a burger and find their health," haha.

There's genuinely nowhere they skimped. Even the lettuce looks like frilled ice lettuce, which is pricier and better-looking than romaine, haha.

Bacon Deluxe Burger and Peanut Bacon Cheese Burger. The tomato slice on the Bacon Deluxe alone is thick, and it's clearly composed with care for the Instagram shot — the well-smashed patty topped with tomato, thin-sliced onion and premium frilled ice lettuce. It genuinely looks like visual art.

And then the rich, heavy Peanut Bacon Cheese Burger. This is exactly the kind of combo I personally go for — the salt of the cheese, the nuttiness of the peanut butter and the fat from the patty meet in the mouth like fireworks. Why go to the Yeouido Fireworks Festival when you can just eat this burger, haha.

It looks a little messy honestly, but that's also kind of cute. You can just pick it up and eat as-is — barely need the knife or fork. A burger's meant to be eaten with both hands, sauce smeared all over your mouth, devoured properly.

The two burgers are totally different in character — one has no vegetables beyond caramelized onion, the other layers tomato through onion. Personally I vote for the rich cheese-burger style without vegetables. The more you eat it, the more your sense of taste just gives up trying to be logical, haha. It's noticeably better than three years ago — maybe the sauce? A true number-one smash burger. The patty isn't overly salty, and it's not so thin that it loses any bite, which I appreciate — I hate when patties are too thin to chew properly. Maybe around 110g? A reasonable amount of meat, though big eaters might find it a touch small.

Peanut butter's nuttiness meeting rich, melty cheese — "delicious" almost undersells it. It's less "tasty!" and more "wow, this balance is incredible," the kind of flavor that pulls you toward two or three more beers.

The surprise standout: corn ribs

And the completely unexpected standout was the corn ribs (₩7,400). Well-fried corn dusted with a salty seasoning — wow, this is the real deal. Burgers aside, it's clear why it's marked as a signature menu item, haha. Something about it reminded me of Native American-style corn. The flavor keeps pulling you back to the beer. Skip the other sides if you have to, but the corn ribs are non-negotiable — one rib is mandatory.

Genuinely impressive — even the burger tray liner has the whole story of how Bored & Hungry came to Korea and when it teamed up with Withburn, written out like a newspaper article, haha. Nice touch. Ate well and

What could be better, and the final verdict

You just drop your tray at the return spot next to the self-serve bar, which makes for a clean, easy flow. The floor can get a little slippery from grease, so watch your step — but aside from that, this is a genuinely friendly, clean and delicious smash burger spot overall.

I'd figured there weren't many good independent burger places left in Seongsu (franchises just aren't my thing), so it was genuinely nice to rediscover one like this. There's apparently a Bored & Hungry in Mapo too, but honestly, skip the Seongsu pop-ups and just come have a proper date over burgers at a real smash burger spot like this. Mission complete.
