Standing bar second round in Changwon: Sapporo draft and tebasaki at
In short
Ganppa Maekju Changwon Sangnam Hyeongje Branch is a standing-bar izakaya in the heart of Sangnam-dong, Changwon. A married couple biked over for a second round, ordering Sapporo draft for ₩8,900, Ebisu draft for ₩11,900, and the house special tebasaki, taking their first sip right at the tap the moment it was poured. There are no seats at all, but that made it a surprisingly easy, casual second stop for a quick drink.

A cool September evening, biking into Sangnam-dong
On a cool September evening, my husband and I had dinner at home and thought, should we go out for a simple beer? So we headed to Sangnam-dong in Changwon. I originally wanted to run over to help digest and cool down with a beer, but I'm a total sweat machine, so rather than dripping sweat and possibly bothering other people, my husband and I quickly agreed to bike there instead, riding through the cool evening breeze.

What kind of place is Ganppa Maekju?
The place we visited was Ganppa Maekju, on the first floor of the Lululala building in the heart of Sangnam-dong, Changwon. A friend recently went and loved it so much she recommended it, so my husband and I checked it out too. Ganppa Maekju is apparently already famous as a hot bar in Gwangalli, and it runs an official collaboration with Sapporo beer. Rather than just being a bar that sells beer, it calls itself a draft beer research lab, serious about the taste and quality of draft beer.

No tables, standing bar only — is it good for a second round?
Unlike a typical bar with regular seated tables, Ganppa Maekju is run entirely as a standing bar. That actually felt great for a light second round after a proper meal. It's a comfortable atmosphere for chatting over a simple beer, no pressure at all!

Maybe because it's a standing bar, turnover felt pretty quick, and the vibe was different from a typical bar, which made for a fun, different kind of experience.

What we ordered and the prices
I got the Sapporo draft for ₩8,900, my husband got the Ebisu draft for ₩11,900, and we ordered the Ganppa special tebasaki (chicken wings) as a side. Every keg has a strict 24-hour rule — it must be finished within 24 hours of opening — and Ganppa Maekju uses a direct-viewing system with pipes under 1m long that skip the chiller entirely, pulling the beer's natural freshness straight from the keg.

The first sip, taken right where it was poured
Ganppa Maekju says the very first sip, taken the moment the beer is poured, is the most delicious, so we tried a sip right at the tap as soon as it came out. It was definitely cool and crisp from the very first sip, clearly fresh off the pour! Drinking beer right where it's poured isn't something you easily get at a regular bar — Ganppa Maekju made it fun haha!

After pouring, they said the glass is pre-rinsed with 0°C ice water to remove any off-flavors and lock in the beer's aroma.

They use ultra-thin glasses imported directly from Japan, so the chill hits your lips in a mere 0.1 seconds, and above all the beer was really smooth, going down incredibly easily. Anyone who likes draft beer would love this.

How's the Ganppa special tebasaki?
The Ganppa special tebasaki tastes similar to Korean-style soy sauce chicken, I'd say. This is an unbeatable combo haha. It's coated in a salty-sweet sauce that's perfect as a beer snack. Take a bite, take a sip of beer, and your hand just keeps going back for more — ordering it was the right call. I ended up eating my husband's share too. The sauce can taste a bit salty at times, but pairing it with the cabbage that comes on the side balances it out nicely.

The beer 5-second challenge and receipt-review lucky draw event
Ganppa Maekju also runs various live events. On the day we visited, we had fun just watching other customers take on the beer 5-second challenge next to us. It really brought out the lively energy that's unique to a standing bar. There's also another event where you can do a receipt review for a lucky draw, with prizes from first to fifth place — a fun little event that could make for great memories if you come with friends.

Final thoughts
It had been a while since my husband and I came out to Sangnam-dong, and the atmosphere was great, the beer was delicious, and it honestly felt like we'd stepped into Japan for a bit. Makes me want to go to Sapporo haha. At first I wondered if standing the whole time would be uncomfortable, but it actually turned out to be a great spot for casually enjoying a beer. If you're looking for a Sangnam-dong bar for solo drinking, a date, or a light second round with friends, I'd recommend Ganppa Maekju.
